On a 2007 Rancher 400 4x4 the actual hose replacement takes a few minutes; everything before and after it is about controlling gasoline and confirming your work. Set the job up correctly and you will never have an open fitting in one hand while hunting for a tool with the other.

Assembling Parts and Tools First

Buy the hose before you take anything apart, and match it to the inside diameter of the piece coming off rather than guessing. Fuel rated rubber hose is what you want here; general purpose tubing hardens fast and is not made to live against gasoline. Along with the hose, collect the following:

  • Nitrile or rubber gloves plus safety glasses
  • New clamps in the correct size, spring clip or small worm gear style
  • A drain pan and a sealable metal or fuel rated container
  • Flat blade screwdriver, pliers, a small socket set, and a sharp utility blade
  • A funnel, a stack of rags, and a fire extinguisher staged nearby
  • Line clamping pliers, useful for pinching the hose if you would rather not drain the carburetor

Handling Gasoline Without Drama

This is the one genuine safety concern in the whole procedure. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it flows downhill and collects along the floor where you cannot smell it as easily. Open the garage door completely and put a fan on the ground moving air outward, not a window fan six feet up. Anything with a flame or a hot element in the same space needs to be shut off entirely, including water heaters and shop heaters. Disconnect the battery negative terminal so a dropped tool cannot arc, cap your fuel container the moment you stop pouring into it, and keep an extinguisher where you can reach it without stepping over the machine.

Carburetor, Petcock, and Gravity Feed

Your 2007 Rancher 400 uses a carburetor fed by gravity, which makes this job noticeably simpler than the same repair on an injected quad. Fuel exits the tank through a manual valve, travels a short run of hose, and enters the carburetor inlet. Because the valve stops flow mechanically, there is no fuel pressure to relieve and no relay or fuse to pull. The carburetor also gives you a float bowl drain screw, which is the cleanest way to empty the fuel still sitting downstream. Note that this is a 4x4 chassis: the front differential and driveshaft occupy space that a two wheel drive quad leaves open, so the hose follows a clipped path that keeps it away from rotating hardware and the exhaust.

Why the Hose Fails in the First Place

Fuel line is rubber, and rubber ages whether the machine is ridden or parked. The plasticizers that keep it soft slowly leave the compound until the hose is stiff enough to crack when flexed. Heat cycles from the 397cc engine, sunlight, and ozone all speed that along. Riders in dry climates see it happen soonest, since low humidity leaches moisture out of the hose wall and leaves it hard and glassy years before a machine stored in damp air reaches the same state.

Ethanol blended gasoline is the other half of the story. Fuel left standing in the line over a long layup draws in moisture and slowly breaks down the inner liner, while gum and varnish build up at both fittings. A hose can therefore be hardening on the outside and dissolving on the inside at once, shedding debris toward the carburetor jets. On a Rancher this age, replace it on time in service rather than waiting for a visible failure.

Spotting Trouble Before It Strands You

  • A fuel puddle or damp stain beneath the frame after the machine has been parked
  • A gasoline odor that hangs around the tank and seat once the engine has cooled
  • Visible cracks, a chalky surface, or a hose that feels like hard plastic when pinched
  • Bogging on acceleration, surging, or lean running that mimics a low fuel level
  • A dirt caked ring at either fitting where seeping fuel has dried and collected dust

Lean running deserves a second look, because a cracked hose end can pull air rather than leak fuel and never leave a drop on the ground.

Getting the Old Hose Out

Turn the fuel valve off, then remove the seat and any panel blocking access to the tank outlet and carburetor inlet. Slide the drain pan into position, open the float bowl drain screw, and let the bowl empty into your container. Move each clamp back along the hose before disturbing the fitting so you are not fighting the clamp and the varnish at the same time.

Twist the hose slightly at the barb to break the bond, then draw it off with steady, straight pressure. If it will not budge, cut it lengthwise and peel it away. Prying on a carburetor spigot or a valve body with a screwdriver is how a small job becomes an expensive one. Photograph the routing before the hose is fully free, paying attention to every clip and to how the line clears the front driveline components on this 4x4 layout.

Installing and Verifying the New Line

Cut the replacement to match the old piece, then push both ends on dry until they seat against the barb shoulder. Keep grease, oil, and silicone off the fittings entirely; lubricant on a sealing surface creates a path for fuel to weep past and lets the hose slide off under vibration. Hot water is all the help stiff rubber needs. Position new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly without crushing the hose. Reseat the line in its clips so it stays clear of hot and moving parts.

Snug the float bowl drain screw, open the fuel valve, and watch both connections for a minute. Gravity pressurizes the line instantly, so a poor seal reveals itself fast. Wipe the fittings dry, look again, then start the engine and inspect a third time while it idles and vibrates. A short test loop followed by one more check gives you real confidence before the bodywork goes back on. If fuel delivery still feels off after a clean replacement, the inline filter or screen is the next suspect, since new hose cannot fix a restriction further upstream.
