The 2006 Wolverine 350 keeps things mechanical where it counts. A manual clutch, a five speed with reverse, and a carbureted air-cooled single mean the fuel system on this machine has exactly four components you need to care about: the tank, the petcock, the hose, and the carburetor. Replacing that hose is one of the most approachable repairs on the whole quad.
How Fuel Gets from the Tank to the Engine
Gasoline leaves the tank through a manual petcock offering ON, RESERVE, and OFF, drops through a short rubber hose under gravity, and enters the inlet on the Mikuni carburetor. Clamps secure each end. At the base of the carburetor, a float bowl drain screw lets you empty the bowl into a container instead of onto the concrete. Nothing in that chain holds pressure and nothing requires electricity.
If your last fuel job was on an injected machine, adjust your expectations. There you would pull a pump fuse, relieve residual pressure, and possibly release a self-locking quick-connect coupler, and the filter would sit inside the tank where you cannot reach it. On this Wolverine, closing the petcock is the entire shutoff procedure. This year of the 350 is the two-wheel-drive version of the platform, which is a small bonus for access: without a front differential and front driveshaft occupying the space below the engine, you have noticeably more room to get your hands around the carburetor end of the hose.
Deciding Whether the Hose Needs Replacing
Work through these with the petcock closed and the bodywork off:
- Fuel wetting the skid plate or dripping to the floor after the machine has been parked
- A gasoline odor around the quad that outlasts the engine's heat
- Surface crazing or fine cracks that widen when you bend the hose into a curve
- A hard, glassy feel rather than soft springiness under a firm pinch
- Dried residue rings at either fitting where seepage has evaporated over time
- Bogging under load, a stumble off idle, or lean surging at steady throttle
The running symptoms are worth taking seriously even with a dry floor. When the inner liner breaks down, a hose can partially collapse or push debris into the carburetor inlet, starving the engine without leaking a drop. If the machine acts like it is running out of gas on a half tank, put the hose near the top of your list.
The Reasons Fuel Hose Wears Out
The rubber ages from both surfaces at once. On the outside, the plasticizing compounds that give new hose its flexibility slowly migrate away, leaving a hard wall that cannot absorb movement. Engine vibration and chassis flex then work hairline cracks into that surface, and every heat cycle from the air-cooled cylinder drives them deeper. Dry, low-humidity climates accelerate the whole process by pulling moisture out of the rubber.
On the inside, ethanol-blended fuel does the damage. Alcohol attracts water and gradually attacks the liner, and gasoline left standing between riding seasons leaves varnish and gum deposits. That is the practical case for replacing hose on age rather than waiting for visible failure — the part can look serviceable while it is already feeding grit toward your jets.
Parts, Tools, and a Safe Workspace
Have ready: gasoline-rated hose matched to the original inside diameter, two new clamps plus a spare, nitrile gloves, eye protection, an approved fuel container, a shallow drain pan, a flat-blade screwdriver, small pliers, sockets for the seat and body panels, a sharp utility knife, and clean rags.
Set the space up properly before you open anything. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it settles at floor level exactly where you will be kneeling. Roll the machine outside or open the door completely instead of relying on a window overhead. Extinguish pilot lights, unplug space heaters, and keep sparks and flame out of the area. Disconnect the battery negative cable so nothing can arc, let the cylinder cool fully, and keep an extinguisher within reach without needing to walk for it.
Getting the Old Hose Free
With the petcock at OFF, remove the seat and the plastic panel covering the tank. Slide your pan beneath the carburetor, back out the float bowl drain screw, let the bowl empty into your container, then retighten the screw. Now work each clamp back along the hose and clear of its barb.
Twist the hose gently at each fitting before pulling. Years of fuel have effectively varnished the rubber to the metal, and breaking that bond with rotation is far kinder than yanking. Pull straight off rather than levering sideways with a screwdriver, because the petcock spigot will crack before a hardened hose lets go. When an end simply will not release, slice lengthwise through the last inch and peel the rubber away from the barb. Note the clips and guides the hose passes through as you extract it so the new piece can follow the same path.
Installation and the Final Leak Test
Cut the replacement to the same length as the old hose. Extra length lets the hose sag toward the exhaust or rub the frame; too little puts constant strain on both fittings. Push each end fully onto its barb, past the raised bead, and do it completely dry. Grease, oil, and silicone have no business on a fuel fitting — lubricant on the sealing surface gives fuel a path out and can carry contamination into the carburetor. Warm a stiff end in hot water if needed.
Place the new clamps just behind the bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly, firm enough to seal without biting into the wall. Route the hose back through its guides in a smooth arc with no kinks and confirm clearance from the cylinder head and exhaust.
Turn the petcock to ON and give gravity a minute to fill the line and bowl. Inspect both fittings, wipe them dry with a clean rag, and look again, since dry rubber shows a slow weep that wet rubber conceals. Reconnect the battery, start the engine, and check a third time at idle with the panels still off. If an inline filter sits between the petcock and carburetor, replace it while everything is accessible; a plugged element causes the same lean, bogging behavior you just fixed, and new hose will not flush it clean.
