Replacing the Gas Line on Your 2006 Suzuki Eiger 400 2X4 Auto

Rubber fuel hose has a service life, and on a 2006 Eiger 400 that clock has been running for a long time. Understanding exactly how the hose deteriorates tells you what to look for, when to replace it as preventive maintenance, and why a line that appears intact can still be causing you problems.
The Two Ways Fuel Hose Dies
Deterioration attacks from the outside and the inside simultaneously, which is why age alone is a valid reason to replace a line. On the exterior, repeated heat cycles from the 376cc single and years of air and sunlight exposure drive the plasticizers out of the rubber compound. The hose loses its springiness, develops a dull chalky surface, and eventually opens hairline cracks wherever it bends. Machines that live in dry, arid regions age faster in this respect, because low ambient humidity continually pulls moisture out of the hose wall and hardens it from the surface inward.
The interior story is chemical. Ethanol-blended pump fuel absorbs water and slowly breaks down the inner liner of ordinary rubber hose. When an Eiger sits through an off-season with that fuel standing in the line, the liner softens and swells while gum and varnish deposits accumulate at the barbs and inside the carburetor. That combination is what produces the classic failure mode on an older quad: a hose that looks fine but has gone soft internally and is quietly restricting flow or feeding debris downstream.
Verifying the Fuel Delivery Setup
Your 2006 Eiger 400 uses a carburetor, not fuel injection, so this is a gravity-fed system with no pump and no pressure to relieve. A petcock valve mounted at the bottom of the tank controls flow through ON, RESERVE, and OFF positions, and a single length of soft rubber hose carries fuel down to the carburetor float bowl. Because you are working on the 2X4 variant, the left side of the frame stays comparatively uncluttered — no front differential case or front driveshaft crowding the route the way they do on a four-wheel-drive chassis. Expect a clean, short run you can see end to end once the plastic is off.
Symptoms Worth Acting On
A failing hose rarely blows out without warning. Look for these signs:
- Fuel pooling on the floor beneath the engine, or a wet streak running down the frame rail
- A gasoline smell that lingers around the front of the machine long after you shut it down
- Surface cracking, a hardened section, or a spot that has swollen and gone spongy
- Dried fuel residue collecting dust in a ring at either fitting
- The engine bogging on acceleration, running lean, hesitating at steady throttle, or feeling starved as if the tank were low
Any one of these justifies pulling the hose off and inspecting it closely. Bend an old line into a tight loop — if the outer surface crazes into fine cracks, it is done regardless of whether it is currently leaking.
Tools, Parts, and a Word About Gasoline
Collect the following before you start: rubber gloves, safety glasses, a lidded fuel-rated container, a drain pan, replacement hose in the correct inside diameter for the Eiger, a handful of new pinch or worm-gear clamps, pliers, a flat-blade screwdriver, a razor blade, sockets for the seat and tank cover, and plenty of clean rags.
Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and creeps along the floor, so ventilation at ground level is what actually matters. Roll the quad outside or open the garage door completely rather than relying on a cracked window. Disconnect the battery, shut off any water heater or furnace pilot in the space, and keep every spark source well clear. Wipe spills immediately instead of letting fuel soak into concrete and evaporate slowly all day.
Removal, Installation, and the Leak Check
Begin with the petcock lever turned to OFF. Remove the seat and the front plastic tank cover so both fittings are in plain view, slide the pan under the carburetor, and open the float bowl drain screw to empty the bowl. Then walk the clamps back along the hose with pliers, clearing them from both barbs.
Twist each hose end gently to break the varnish bond before pulling it off. A hose that has hardened onto a barb should be cut lengthwise with the razor and peeled away in halves rather than pried, since the petcock spigot and carburetor inlet are far more fragile than the rubber you are removing. Note the retaining clip position and the clearance path past the engine cases while the old hose is still in place.
Cut the new hose to match the original length exactly. Push each end fully onto its barb, past the raised bead, and do it dry — grease, oil, or silicone on a fitting is the surest way to create a slow weep and to let the hose migrate off the barb under vibration. Hot water for half a minute softens a stubborn new hose enough to seat by hand. Snug the fresh clamps just behind each bead, firm but not crushing, and settle the hose back into its clip clear of the exhaust and steering hardware.
Finish by turning the petcock to ON and letting a full tank apply static pressure while you watch both joints with a dry rag beneath them for two or three minutes. Start the engine and inspect again at idle, then again after a short lap around the yard while everything is warm and expanded. Two dry connections and no fuel odor mean the plastic can go back on and the Eiger is ready for real work.
