The four wheel drive Hawkeye 300 packs a front differential and driveline into a compact chassis, which means the little bit of rubber hose feeding the carburetor shares space with more hardware than it would on the 2X4 version. This 2006 model is carbureted, so the fuel circuit is unpressurized and a manual petcock under the tank is your shutoff. There is nothing to depressurize and no pump to disable, which puts the job comfortably within reach of an intermediate home mechanic.

Preparation, Parts, and Gasoline Safety

Have all of this within arm's reach before you begin:

  • Rubber or nitrile gloves and safety glasses
  • An approved sealed container for the fuel you drain out
  • Fuel rated hose matching the original inside diameter
  • New clamps, pinch style or small worm gear, sized to the hose
  • Flat blade screwdriver, pliers, razor knife, and rags

Take the fuel handling seriously rather than casually. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles into a layer right at floor level where your face ends up while you work under the tank, so open the overhead door completely or push the quad outside. Kill any ignition source in the area, including battery chargers, hot work lights, and appliances with pilot flames, and put fuel soaked rags in a sealed metal container outdoors when you are done.

Confirming a Carbureted Setup

Pull the seat and look at the tank outlet. A manual valve with a barbed spigot, a rubber hose, and a clamp at each end is the carbureted signature, and that is what this Hawkeye has. An injected quad would show a wiring connector on the tank, a plastic locking coupler on the line, and a hose built for pressure, and the job would open with pulling the pump fuse and cranking until the engine died to bleed the system. Skipping straight to closing a petcock is the luxury this model gives you.

The other practical difference: injected machines usually hide their fuel filter inside the tank next to the pump, out of reach without dropping the whole assembly. On this carbureted Hawkeye the filtration lives where you can see it, so inspecting the screen behind the petcock while the hose is off costs you nothing.

The Aging Process in Rubber Hose

Age is the main culprit. The plasticizers keeping fuel hose flexible slowly migrate out under repeated heat cycling, leaving rubber that is stiff and eventually brittle. Once it stops flexing, the hose no longer grips its barbs the way it should and cracks begin forming along the bends. Dry climates accelerate the timeline by pulling moisture out of the hose wall, which is why identical machines age differently depending on where they live.

Ethanol blended pump gas attacks from the inside. Fuel left standing in the line for months absorbs moisture and works on the inner liner, while evaporating gasoline deposits gum and varnish that narrow the passage. A hose can therefore be hardening outside and breaking down inside at once, which is why replacement on a machine of this vintage is preventive rather than reactive.

Spotting the Warning Signs

The clear signals are a fuel puddle or wet stain beneath the machine after it has been parked, a strong gasoline smell hanging around the tank, and visible cracking or a chalky, hardened feel when you pinch along the hose. A ring of dust caked residue at a barb is dried seepage, not mud.

Less obvious is what restriction does to the way the quad runs. When a hardened hose partially collapses it cannot keep the float bowl supplied under demand, so the Hawkeye bogs climbing, feels lean at higher rpm, or acts like it is out of gas with fuel still in the tank. Because idle demand is small, the engine typically idles fine, which makes this easy to misread as a carburetor issue.

Removing the Old Line

Turn the petcock to off, then let the engine idle until it stalls to empty the hose. Disconnect the battery negative lead. Slide a pan under the carburetor and open the float bowl drain screw, letting the bowl empty before you disturb any fitting.

Slide both clamps back along the hose, clear of the barbs. Twist the hose gently to break the varnish bond, then pull it straight off. A hose that has effectively bonded to a fitting should be slit lengthwise with a razor knife and peeled away rather than pried, which protects the soft petcock spigot and the carburetor inlet.

Pay attention to the path as the old hose comes out. This is the 4X4 chassis, so the run threads around front differential hardware and additional frame structure that the two wheel drive Hawkeye does not have, and there are usually an extra clip or two holding it clear of moving parts. Photograph each one before you lose the reference.

Installation and Leak Verification

Cut the new hose to the same length as the piece you removed, then push each end fully onto its barb until it seats against the shoulder. Assemble dry — grease, oil, and silicone all defeat the seal at a barb and let the hose walk off under vibration. If an end resists, soften it in hot water for a few seconds instead of reaching for lubricant.

Set new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and snug them evenly, firm enough to seal but not so tight that the hose deforms. Route the line back through its original clips, keeping it well away from the exhaust and clear of the front driveline.

Reconnect the battery, open the petcock, and let the hose fill while a dry rag sits under each joint. Watch it for several minutes at rest, then start the engine and inspect both ends at idle before blipping the throttle to flex everything. Ride a short loop and check once more hot, since heat and vibration expose a marginal clamp that passed a cold look. Confirm the tank cap vent is clear before you call it finished.
