The 2006 Hawkeye 300 2X4 is a small displacement, value oriented utility quad, and like nearly every machine in that class from the mid 2000s it feeds a carburetor from a gravity assisted tank through a manual petcock. There is no in tank pump to defeat, no residual pressure to bleed, and no locking couplers to release. Close the valve, work the clamps, and you are done.
Reading the Fuel System Before You Start
Lift the seat and look at the tank outlet on your Hawkeye. A carbureted setup shows a manual fuel valve with a barbed spigot, a rubber hose, and a clamp at each end. If a machine were injected instead you would find a wiring harness plugged into the tank, a plastic quick connect coupler, and a hose rated for pressure — and the procedure would begin by pulling the pump fuse and running the engine until it stalled to bleed the rail. None of that applies here, which makes this one of the friendlier fuel jobs on any powersports machine.
One more advantage on a carbureted Hawkeye: the float bowl has a drain screw, so you can empty the carburetor deliberately instead of catching whatever spills. Injected models bury their fuel filter inside the tank with the pump, while this one keeps its filtration where you can actually see and service it.
Why the Hose Goes Bad
Fuel line hardens with age as the plasticizers that keep it pliable work their way out of the rubber. Once flexibility is gone, the hose quits sealing tightly on its barbs and begins to check and crack, particularly right where it bends near a fitting. Heat from the engine drives this along, and dry air accelerates it further by drawing moisture out of the hose wall, so quads used in arid regions often need hose sooner than the mileage would suggest.
Ethanol blended gasoline adds a chemical attack from the inside. Fuel left sitting in the line for months pulls in moisture and softens the liner, while evaporation leaves gum and varnish that restrict flow. A hose can be simultaneously hardening on the outside and dissolving on the inside, which is why replacement on a machine this age is preventive maintenance rather than a repair.
Symptoms That Point at the Line
- A fuel puddle or wet stain under the frame after the quad has been sitting
- A persistent gasoline odor near the tank and seat area
- Cracks, crazing, or stiff glassy sections you can feel by pinching along the hose
- A dried, dust encrusted ring at either barb where fuel has been weeping
- Bogging under throttle, a lean stumble, or the engine acting out of fuel with a tank half full
The performance symptoms come from restriction rather than leakage. A hose that has hardened and partially collapsed can supply idle demand all day and still starve the float bowl the moment you ask the 300 to work.
Tools, Prep, and Handling Gasoline
Collect gloves, eye protection, an approved sealed container for the fuel you drain, fuel rated hose matched to the original inside diameter, new clamps, a flat blade screwdriver, pliers, a razor knife, and plenty of rags.
Then think about where you are working. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles at the floor, exactly where you will be kneeling, so open the garage door completely or roll the machine outside. Keep chargers, work lights with hot bulbs, grinders, and any appliance with a pilot flame out of the space, and store fuel soaked rags in a sealed metal can outdoors rather than in a trash bag.
Off With the Old, On With the New
Turn the petcock off and let the engine run until it dies to clear the hose. Disconnect the battery negative lead. Slide a pan under the carburetor, open the float bowl drain, and let it empty. Slide each clamp back off its fitting, twist the hose to break the varnish bond, and pull it free. Hose that has hardened onto a barb comes off cleanest when you slit it lengthwise with a razor and peel it, which spares the fragile petcock spigot from prying damage.
Being a 2X4, the Hawkeye has no front differential or front driveline in the way, so the run from tank to carburetor is short and unobstructed compared with the 4X4 version of the same machine. Still, photograph the routing and every clip before the old hose is out.
Cut the replacement to the original length, no longer. Push each end onto its barb until it bottoms out, dry — never use grease, oil, or spray lube on a fuel fitting, because it compromises the seal and lets the hose migrate off under vibration. Hot water on a stubborn end makes it slide on easily. Set new clamps just behind the bead on each barb and snug them without flattening the hose, then return the line to its factory guides, clear of exhaust heat.
Confirming the Repair
Reconnect the battery, open the petcock, and let the line fill while you watch. Place a dry rag under both joints and observe for a few minutes; a gravity fed system reveals leaks at rest, which is a real advantage. Start the engine, inspect again while it idles, then rev it briefly to flex the assembly. Take a short ride and repeat once everything is hot, since expansion and vibration expose clamps that looked fine cold. Last, confirm the tank cap vent breathes freely, because a plugged vent produces fuel starvation symptoms identical to a bad hose.
