It is also the part most likely to be original, and rubber that has been in service since the mid 2000s has spent a long time hardening. Replacing it is straightforward once you respect the one detail that separates this machine from a carbureted quad.
Reading the Signs Before a Failure
The earliest clue is usually smell rather than sight. If a raw gasoline odor hangs around the tank after the machine has been shut down, fuel is getting out somewhere. Follow that up visually by looking for a wet sheen at either fitting, a ring of dust cemented in place by dried fuel, or a drip on the skid plate.
Handle the hose too. Squeeze it along its length: sound rubber flattens and rebounds, aged rubber stays hard and hollow feeling. Flex a bend and look for fine cracks opening on the surface. Then consider how the engine has been running. A restricted or compromised line starves the injectors, and the symptoms are bogging under load, a stumble when you open the throttle hard, or a lean feel that shows up at higher rpm.
What Digital Fuel Injection Means for This Job
This Brute Force 750 is fuel injected, not carbureted. That has three practical consequences. There is no petcock to turn off, so you cannot isolate the tank with a twist of your fingers. The line holds pressure after shutdown because an electric pump inside the tank feeds the throttle bodies. And the fuel filter is part of that in–tank pump assembly rather than sitting inline where a carbureted machine would put it.
What that means in practice is that the job starts electrically. Pull the fuel pump fuse or relay, crank the engine until it stalls to consume the pressure remaining in the line, switch the key off, and disconnect the negative battery cable. Line–clamping pliers substitute for the petcock you do not have, letting you pinch off a soft section to stop siphoning while you work.
The Two Ways Rubber Dies
Fuel hose deteriorates from both surfaces simultaneously. Outside, the softening compounds that make it flexible migrate out of the rubber, leaving a stiff wall that cannot conform to a fitting the way it once did. Heat from the V–twin accelerates the loss, and dry climates accelerate it again, because low ambient humidity draws moisture out of the hose and hardens it well ahead of schedule.
Inside, ethanol–blended gasoline degrades the liner. Alcohol attracts water and works on the inner surface, doing the most damage when fuel sits still in the hose for months rather than flowing through. The finished product is a hose that is brittle on the outside and softened and varnished within, quietly sending particles downstream toward the injectors.
Preparation, Ventilation, and Depressurizing

- New clamps to suit the fittings you find, plus a quick–disconnect tool if the machine uses a locking coupler
- Line–clamping pliers, since there is no shutoff valve

- Screwdriver, pliers, sockets for the seat and bodywork, clean rags
Set up where air moves at ground level. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles low, exactly where your face goes when reaching under the fender, so an open window across the room is no help. Work outside or with the overhead door fully raised, keep battery chargers and hot drop lights well clear, and shut off any nearby appliance with a pilot flame.
Disconnecting the Line
Once pressure is relieved and the battery is disconnected, take off the seat and the panels covering the tank and the hose run toward the throttle bodies. Put the pan underneath and lay a rag over each fitting as you open it, because residual fuel still sits in the hose even after the circuit is bled down.
For a clamped barb, slide the clamp well back before twisting the hose to break the varnish bond. For a quick–connect coupler, compress the locking tabs evenly and pull straight off, never sideways, since brittle plastic collars split when pried. A hose end that refuses to release should be cut lengthwise and peeled off rather than forced. Photograph the clips before the line is out: on this 4x4 chassis it routes past front differential hardware and extra frame bracing, and the factory positions keep it away from the driveline and hot exhaust.
Reassembly Without Lubricant
Match the new hose to the old length exactly. Slack is a liability on a machine with a front driveline crowding the lower frame. Wipe both fittings clean, then press each hose end on until it bottoms fully against the shoulder. Do it dry — no grease, no oil, no silicone on a fuel fitting, because any lubricant on the sealing surface gives pressurized fuel a channel to escape along. Warm water softens a stubborn hose end enough to slide on by hand.
Set new clamps just behind the bead on each barb and tighten evenly to firm without crushing the rubber. A self–locking quick–connect gets pushed until it clicks and then tugged to confirm the latch, with no clamp added. Reseat the hose in every original clip and confirm it touches nothing hot along its run.
Pressurize, Inspect, Ride
Refit the pump fuse or relay, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without cranking. Each cycle runs the pump and brings the line up to pressure, letting you examine both joints while the engine is off and everything is still dry. Check by eye and by fingertip, then start the engine and inspect again with a clean rag as it idles and warms.
If a delivery complaint survives a clean installation, remember where the filter lives on this 2006 Brute Force 750 — inside the tank as part of the pump assembly, not on the visible hose. New line and a restricted filter produce the same symptoms, so rule the hose out first and then move to the tank.
