Check both barbs closely for a caked ring of dust, which is dried fuel residue built up over months of slow weeping.

Running symptoms matter too. When a liner swells or a hose partially collapses, flow is restricted and the 250 will idle normally while bogging or stumbling the moment you open the throttle, acting starved even with a full tank. If a carburetor cleaning failed to solve a bogging complaint, look upstream before tearing into the carb again.

Removal and Installation Step by Step

Turn the petcock to OFF, remove the seat and any panel covering the hose run, and slide the drain pan under the carburetor. Open the float bowl drain screw and let the bowl empty completely. Then loosen the clamp at the carburetor barb and slide it well back along the hose so it is clear of your hands.

Break the varnish bond with a gentle quarter twist rather than pulling straight, since years of fuel effectively glue old rubber to brass. If the hose stays locked on, slit it lengthwise with the blade and peel it off the fitting instead of prying. Handle the petcock end the same way, with a rag positioned for the fuel remaining in the tank neck. As a 2WD machine this Bayou runs its line down a short, largely unobstructed path, while a 4x4 quad has to route around front differential hardware and extra frame clearance points. Note each clip and guide before the old hose comes free.

Cut the replacement to match the removed piece exactly, because a hose left long will chafe on a frame tube or drape toward the header and recreate the failure. Soften the ends in hot water, push each fully onto its barb until it bottoms against the shoulder, and assemble everything dry. No grease, no oil, no silicone anywhere near the fittings, since a lubricant film gives gasoline a route to migrate out from under the clamp. Place the clamps just behind the raised bead on each barb, tighten evenly to snug rather than crushed, and route the hose through its original guides clear of the cylinder head and exhaust.

Confirming the Job Before You Ride

Close the bowl drain, turn the petcock to ON, and watch both joints as the line fills. Blot each connection with a clean dry rag and read the cloth for darkening, which reveals a seep well before your eye can. Start the engine, let it idle for several minutes, then inspect once more while the machine is running and vibrating, since that is when a marginal seal gives itself away. Flip the petcock to RESERVE for a moment so the lower tank port is tested as well.

While everything is still drained, clean or replace the petcock screen and any small inline filter element. That is an advantage of a carbureted setup, because fuel-injected quads house their filter inside the tank as part of the pump assembly where a hose replacement never reaches it. Reinstall the bodywork and your 250 is back on solid footing.
