Fuel hose rarely fails all at once. It gives you weeks or months of small hints first, and a 2006 Recon that gets used for chores rather than trail miles can accumulate every one of those hints without anybody noticing. Learning to read them is what keeps you from discovering the problem as a puddle on the barn floor or a dead engine two miles from the truck.
Hints That the Hose Is Going
Start with your nose. Raw gasoline smell that lingers around the machine hours after shutdown almost always means fuel is escaping somewhere, and on a gravity-fed quad the hose and its two fittings are the likeliest place. Then use your eyes: a damp patch or slow drip beneath the left side of the engine, a dust-caked collar at a barb where fuel has seeped and dried over and over, or fine cracks opening along the outside of the bend.
Running symptoms tell a related story. A hose whose liner has swollen or partially collapsed restricts flow, so the float bowl cannot refill fast enough and the engine leans out under load, bogging on a climb or hesitating when you open the throttle hard. A hose shedding varnish plugs the jets and produces the same fuel-starved feel less predictably. If your Recon idles fine and stumbles only when asked for power, look upstream.
A Two Minute Hands-On Check
- Close the petcock, then pinch the hose along its full length and note anywhere it feels hard rather than springy
- Flex the bend near the carburetor and watch for cracks that open under the flex and close when released
- Look for a gray, chalky surface, which signals the compound has dried out
- Check both barbs for staining, wetness, or a residue ring
- Squeeze and release the hose to confirm it recovers its round shape instead of staying flat
Confirming the System You Are Working On
The 2006 Recon is carbureted. Fuel drops from the tank through a manual petcock with OFF, ON, and RES positions, runs down one short hose, and enters the carburetor inlet under gravity alone. No pump, no pressure, no electrical isolation required. Setting the valve to OFF is the entire shutoff procedure, which is far simpler than the injected quads sold alongside it, where a pump inside the tank keeps the supply line pressurized and the fuse must be pulled and the engine run down before a fitting is opened.
It is also a two-wheel-drive chassis. That keeps the hose run short and completely exposed once the seat and the plastic over the tank come off. Four-wheel-drive utility models push their fuel lines around a front differential and extra frame structure, which means more clips to release and tighter spaces to reach into.
The Reasons Rubber Gives Up
Age does most of the damage. Heat cycles from the air-cooled single steadily bake plasticizers out of the rubber, and the hose progresses from flexible to stiff to brittle until it can no longer absorb the bend where it curves toward the carburetor. Dry climates hasten that hardening by drawing moisture out of the hose wall. Working the opposite direction, ethanol-blended gasoline pulls water into the system and degrades the inner liner, and fuel that sits still for an extended period oxidizes into gum and varnish that stiffens the hose internally and releases particles downstream. Both processes are running at all times on a machine of this age.
What to Have Ready and How to Stay Safe
Gather gasoline-rated hose in the original inside diameter, two new clamps, gloves, eye protection, a sealed fuel can with a funnel, a flat-blade screwdriver, pliers, a socket set for the plastics, a razor blade, and rags. Fit new clamps rather than reusing the old ones, because aged spring clamps lose tension and worm-gear bands stay deformed after their first tightening.
Now the part that actually matters for your safety. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it sinks off the quad and travels across the floor toward pilot lights, shop heaters, and battery chargers sitting low. Roll the machine outside if you can. Working inside, open the overhead door fully, shut off anything with an open flame, keep the drained fuel capped instead of in an open pan, and wear gloves because gasoline strips the oils from your skin almost instantly.
Removal, Installation, and Leak Verification
With the petcock closed, attach a short hose to the float bowl drain nipple under the carburetor, run it into your container, and open the drain screw so the low point empties cleanly. Slide both clamps back, then twist the hose a quarter turn in each direction at the barb to shear the varnish bond. It should slide off easily after that. If the hose is too hard to rotate, slit it lengthwise with the razor and peel it off the spigot instead of prying, sparing the petcock outlet and carburetor inlet. Photograph the routing before the old piece is free.
Trim the replacement to the same length as the original, warm the ends in hot water, and push each fully onto its barb past the retaining bead. Assemble everything dry, since grease, oil, or silicone on a sealing surface prevents the rubber from gripping and opens a weep path clamping cannot fix. Set the new clamps just behind the bead at both ends and tighten them evenly without cutting into the wall. Reproduce the original arc so the line clears the exhaust and the shift linkage. Both ends here are clamped barbs, unlike some injected machines that use self-locking couplers requiring no clamp.
Open the petcock and wait five minutes with the engine off, letting gravity test the joints for you. Inspect both fittings under strong light, wipe each with a clean dry rag, and check the cloth for fuel. When both are dry, start the engine and check again at idle, since vibration finds seals that hold when static. Finish by rinsing the petcock screen in clean fuel while it is easy to reach — a serviceable detail on your carbureted 2006 Recon that injected quads do not offer, since their filter sits inside the tank with the pump.
