Fuel Line Service on a 2006 Honda Rancher 350 4x4

The 2006 model year closed out the Rancher 350 line, and plenty of these quads are still in daily service on properties where nothing else does the job as cheaply. What has not aged well on any of them is the rubber. A fuel hose measures its life in years, not hours, and a machine that has spent most of two decades parked between chores may have a line in worse shape than one that has been ridden hard and often.

Time, Not Mileage, Is What Kills Fuel Hose

The suppleness of fuel hose comes from plasticizers compounded into the rubber, and those slowly work their way out and evaporate whether or not the machine moves. Heat cycles from the air–cooled single accelerate the loss, so the hose stiffens progressively: first it resists being pinched flat, then the surface turns chalky and gray, and finally cracks open at the sharpest bend in the run. From there, engine vibration and frame flex do the rest. Owners in dry, low–humidity regions reach that point sooner, because arid air draws moisture out of the rubber wall.

Ethanol–blended gasoline attacks from inside. Fuel standing in the hose for months absorbs atmospheric water and slowly breaks down the inner liner, sending fine particles downstream while leaving gum and varnish in the petcock screen and the carburetor's small passages. That combination is why a hose can look acceptable from outside and still be failing. On a 2006 machine wearing its original line, replacement is simply overdue.

Which Fuel System This Rancher Uses

Establish this before ordering parts. The 2006 TRX350 is carbureted. Fuel travels from the tank to the carburetor by gravity through a mechanical petcock offering OFF, ON, and RES, and no part of the line is pressurized. That distinction matters because a fuel–injected quad demands a different opening move — pull the pump fuse or relay, crank until the engine stalls to bleed off residual pressure, and only then touch a fitting. Injected machines also carry their fuel filter inside the tank with the pump, and some use self–locking quick–connect couplers that need no clamp at all. Here you get a two–finger shutoff lever, plain clamped hose ends, and a float bowl drain screw for emptying the system on purpose.

On the 4x4 chassis, the front differential and its driveshaft take up room a two–wheel–drive layout leaves open, so the hose threads through slightly tighter clearance and relies on its clips to stay off the header and away from the front driveline. Photograph that routing first.

Symptoms Worth Acting On

  • Fuel pooling under the machine after it sits, or a wet streak down a frame rail
  • Gasoline odor that lingers in a closed building long after the engine cooled
  • Visible crazing, splits, or a dried gray finish on the hose
  • Hose that feels rigid instead of rubbery when squeezed
  • Bogging on hills, lean surging, or a stall that feels exactly like running out of gas
  • Needing the reserve position sooner than the fuel level should require, which points to restricted flow

Gear on the Bench and Air Moving Through the Shop

You will want fuel–rated hose in the original inside diameter, new clamps of the same style, gloves, eye protection, a drain pan, a sealed approved fuel container, a flat–blade screwdriver, basic sockets, a sharp utility blade, rags, and good light.

Ventilation is not a formality here. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so in a closed garage it sinks and collects across the floor at the exact height you are kneeling while you work. Roll the quad outside if you can. If not, open the door fully and place a fan at floor level pushing air out of the space. Extinguish pilot lights, move chargers and power tools well clear, and disconnect the negative battery cable before you open any fitting.

Taking the Old Line Off

Turn the petcock to OFF. Pull the seat and whichever fender panel blocks your view of the tank outlet, then set the drain pan under the carburetor and open the float bowl drain screw. Letting the bowl and the hose drain into the pan is what separates a clean job from a messy one. Snug the screw back down once it stops flowing.

Walk both clamps back along the hose until they are clear of their barbs. Rotate the hose on each fitting to break the varnish bond that has formed over the years, then work it free gradually rather than pulling hard. Hardened rubber will bend a petcock spigot or crack a carburetor inlet before it releases, so slit any truly stuck section lengthwise with the blade and peel it off in two halves. Trace the line back through its clips as it comes out.

Installing the New Hose and Verifying No Leaks

Cut the replacement to match the old piece laid out straight. Extra length is a liability, not a safety margin, since a sagging hose eventually contacts the exhaust or chafes a frame edge. Put the clamps on the hose first, then press each end fully onto its barb until it seats against the shoulder. Do it dry. Grease, oil, and silicone all leave a film that gives fuel a route to creep out under a clamp, and hot water is the correct way to soften a stiff hose end.

Seat each clamp just behind the raised bead on the fitting, tightening evenly until the rubber is gripped without being cut into. Return the hose to its original clips.

Reconnect the battery and turn the petcock to ON. Gravity feed means the line is full immediately, so watch both joints closely for a solid minute; a marginal seal shows up fast as a wet bead at a clamp. Wipe the fittings dry, look again, then start the engine and let it idle several minutes while you inspect with a flashlight. Dry connections through a warm idle mean the repair is sound. Refit the plastics, and take one look under the Rancher after its first real ride to confirm the floor stays clean.
