How to Change the Fuel Line on a 2006 Rancher 350 2X4 ES

Twenty minutes with a flashlight can tell you everything you need to know about the hose feeding your 2006 Rancher 350 2X4 ES. This was the final model year for the TRX350 platform, and every one of them left the factory carbureted: a 329cc air-cooled single, a hand operated petcock with ON, OFF, and RES detents under the tank, and a single gravity fed hose running to the carburetor. No fuel pump means no pressure to relieve and no fuse to pull, so the inspection and the repair both stay refreshingly simple.
Giving the Hose a Proper Once–Over
Pull the seat and enough plastic to see the full run of hose, then work through it methodically. Squeeze the middle of the line between two fingers; healthy hose compresses and springs back, while a failing one feels like a piece of tubing made of plastic. Bend the line into a loose loop and watch the outer wall for fine crazing. Then look at the two ends, because the sections gripped by clamps and warmed by the engine always degrade first. Finally, run a dry finger under each clamp and check it for dampness.
Beyond the hose itself, watch for these on the machine as a whole:
- Fuel spotting on the ground beneath the frame, most noticeable after the Rancher has sat with a full tank
- A gasoline smell that lingers in an enclosed space long after shutdown
- Hardened, chalky, or permanently kinked hose
- A ring of dried grime around a fitting where fuel has been seeping and evaporating
- An engine that bogs climbing a grade, stumbles lean under load, or feels like it is running out of gas with fuel still aboard
What You Need on Hand
Set all of this out before the petcock gets turned:
- Gasoline rated hose in the original inside diameter
- Fresh clamps in the correct size, plus one spare
- Nitrile gloves, eye protection, and a stack of rags
- A capped container rated for fuel
- Clear tubing to run off the carburetor float bowl drain
- Screwdrivers, pliers, a socket set for the seat and panels, and a sharp utility blade
Handle the fumes seriously. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles into the low corners of a garage, where it can linger long after you think the smell has cleared. Work outdoors if the weather allows, or open the door fully and set a fan on the floor pushing air out of the building. Extinguish pilot lights, put grinders and open bulb lamps away, and keep the drain container closed when you are not pouring into it.
Shutting Down and Extracting the Old Line
Rotate the petcock to OFF, then remove the seat and the body panels blocking the tank spigot and the carburetor inlet. Slide the clear tube onto the float bowl drain fitting, direct it into the container, and back the drain screw out to empty the bowl and everything in the hose below the valve. Snug the screw when the flow stops.
Both clamps need to move well back along the hose before either end is disturbed. Old fuel varnish effectively glues rubber to brass, so break that bond with a gentle rotation of the hose rather than pulling straight and hard. When an end simply will not release, slit it lengthwise with the blade and peel it off in halves — the petcock spigot and the carburetor inlet both bend more easily than they appear, and a peeled hose spares them entirely. This being the two wheel drive Rancher, there is no front driveshaft or differential case narrowing the space, so the whole run is visible at once. Photograph the clip positions before the hose is fully clear anyway.
Fitting the Replacement
Cut the new hose against the old one so the lengths match. A line left too long drapes onto the crankcase or scrubs a frame tube, while one cut short keeps steady tension on both spigots as the engine rocks. Push each end on dry until it seats against the shoulder of the barb. Do not use grease, oil, or silicone anywhere near a fitting; lubricant stops the rubber from gripping and hands fuel a path out. Thirty seconds in hot water is the only assistance a stiff end should get.
Set each clamp just behind the raised bead so it cannot creep off, and tighten it firmly without cutting into the rubber. Route the hose back through its original guides with real clearance from the exhaust, and keep it away from the electric shift motor and its connector on this ES model so a future drip never lands on that wiring. Confirm the hose sweeps in a gentle curve with no kink anywhere along the path.
Verifying the Work
Turn the petcock to ON and stand back for a minute while gravity fills the float bowl. With fuel standing at full head pressure, press a clean dry rag against each connection and inspect the cloth for any color change. When both stay clean, start the engine and let it idle for several minutes, then check the joints once more — heat and vibration expose a clamp that was only nearly tight. While you are in there, look at the strainer in the petcock and make sure the vent in the filler cap breathes freely, because a plugged vent starves a gravity fed carburetor the same way a collapsed hose does.
Understanding Why the Old One Failed
Knowing the cause helps you set a sensible replacement interval instead of waiting for the next leak. Fuel hose stays soft thanks to plasticizers mixed into the rubber, and heat drives those out year after year. A Rancher's air-cooled cylinder puts more thermal cycling into nearby components than a liquid-cooled engine does, so this hose ages faster than its calendar age suggests. As the compound hardens it loses the ability to flex with the chassis, and small surface cracks open and spread.
Climate and fuel finish the job. Dry regional air draws moisture out of the hose wall and accelerates the hardening from the outside, which is why quads from arid country tend to have hose that snaps rather than bends. Ethanol–blended gasoline works on the inner liner instead, degrading it and leaving gum behind whenever the machine sits for months with fuel in the line. With both processes running for the better part of two decades, a fresh hose and new clamps on this 2006 Rancher is maintenance rather than repair.
