Fuel Line Replacement on the 2006 Rancher 350 2X4

The 2006 model year closed out the TRX350 Rancher, and like every one before it, this quad delivers fuel the old fashioned way. A carbureted 329cc air-cooled single sits below a tank whose petcock you turn by hand, offering ON, OFF, and RES, and a single hose carries gasoline down to the carburetor with gravity doing all the work. There is no fuel pump to depressurize and no electronic module involved, which makes replacing that hose one of the friendliest jobs on the machine.

A Look at the Supply Path

Fuel exits the tank through the petcock on the underside, where a small screen catches sediment before it can move on. The reserve position draws from a lower standpipe so the last of the tank is still usable. From the valve, the hose drops to the carburetor inlet on the left side of the engine, and the float in the bowl controls how much actually enters. Since nothing pressurizes this circuit, internal hose condition carries real consequence — a line that has swollen inward will restrict flow, and there is no pump available to push past the restriction.

Signals of a Hose Nearing the End

Watch for the following, and act on any of them:

  • A damp patch or puddle of fuel on the floor under the frame, most apparent with a full tank
  • A gasoline smell that stays in a closed garage long after the last ride
  • Surface cracking, a chalky gray cast, or hose that has set into a permanent bend
  • A dark, grit caked ring at a fitting where fuel has been weeping and evaporating
  • An engine that bogs on hills, stumbles lean under throttle, or acts as though the tank is nearly empty

These are not symptoms to ride out for another season. Fuel escaping near a hot air-cooled cylinder and exhaust is a hazard well out of proportion to the cost of a new hose and two clamps.

Gathering What You Need

Pull it all together before the petcock gets turned:

  • Fuel rated hose in the original inside diameter
  • Fresh clamps in the correct size, plus one spare in case a clamp distorts
  • Nitrile or rubber gloves, plus eye protection
  • A capped container approved for gasoline
  • Clear tubing for the float bowl drain
  • Screwdrivers, pliers, a socket set, a sharp blade, and a stack of rags

Give ventilation real thought rather than a nod. Gasoline vapor is denser than air and pools in the lowest part of an enclosed space, precisely where a heater pilot or a shop light on the floor tends to live. Work outdoors if you can, and if not, open the door completely and put a fan low in the opening pushing air out. Extinguish pilot lights, get grinders and exposed bulb lamps out of the area, and keep the fuel container closed except when pouring.

Taking the Old Hose Out

Set the petcock to OFF, remove the seat, and take off the panels that block a clear view of both fittings. Fit the clear tube onto the float bowl drain nipple, run it into your container, and open the drain screw to empty the bowl and the hose beneath the valve. Close the screw the moment flow stops.

Slide both clamps well clear of the barbs before disturbing either end. Aged rubber bonds itself to brass with fuel varnish, so break the seal by twisting the hose gently instead of pulling straight and hard. If an end holds fast, split it lengthwise with the blade and peel it off in halves rather than prying against the spigot. This is a two wheel drive Rancher, so there is no front driveshaft or differential housing crowding the routing and the entire run stays in view. Note the clip positions before the hose leaves the frame, then wipe both barbs and check them for burrs or leftover rubber.

Fitting and Securing the New Line

Measure against the old hose and cut the new one to the same length. Excess creates a line that drapes onto the crankcase or rubs a frame tube; too little leaves both fittings under constant pull as the engine moves on its mounts. Slide each end fully onto its barb until it seats against the shoulder, and assemble it dry — grease, oil, and silicone all stop the rubber from gripping and open a path for fuel to weep out. Hot water for half a minute is the only help a stiff end should need.

Set each clamp just behind the raised bead so it cannot creep off the fitting, and tighten evenly without cutting into the hose. Route the line back through its original guides, keeping generous clearance from the exhaust and clear of the foot shift linkage on this standard shift model. A final glance along the run should show a smooth curve and no pinch.

Leak Check, Then Ride

Turn the petcock to ON and let gravity refill the float bowl without starting the engine. With fuel standing in the line at full head pressure, blot each connection with a clean dry rag and inspect the cloth closely for any darkening. When both come back clean, start the engine and let it idle for several minutes, then check again, because heat and vibration are what reveal a clamp that was merely close to tight.

Two small items are worth handling while the bodywork is off. Look at the strainer inside the petcock, and confirm the vent in the filler cap passes air freely; either one plugged will starve this carburetor with symptoms that mimic a bad hose exactly. Wipe the surrounding area dry so any future seepage shows up immediately, reinstall the panels and seat, and take the 2006 Rancher on a short shakedown before trusting it with a full day of work.
