Half the difficulty in any fuel job comes from starting it without the right pieces on hand. Get the hose, the clamps, and the containers sorted first and a 2005 Wolverine 350 gives up its fuel line in under an hour. This machine is carbureted and gravity fed, so there is no pressurized circuit to fight and no special tooling required.
The Shopping List and the Toolbox
- Fuel-rated replacement hose matched to the inside diameter of the original piece, bought a little long
- Two fresh clamps and one spare, either spring clips or narrow worm-gear bands
- Nitrile gloves and eye protection
- An approved fuel container plus a shallow drain pan
- Flat-blade screwdriver, small pliers, sockets for the seat and side panel fasteners
- A sharp utility knife, a generous stack of clean rags, and an extinguisher nearby
Notably absent from that list are line-clamping pliers. Those are essential on a fuel-injected quad that has no petcock and holds pressure after shutdown, but the 2005 Wolverine gives you a manual valve at the tank that stops flow entirely. Skip the pliers and save the money for a spare length of hose.
Handling Gasoline Like It Deserves
Fuel vapor is heavier than air. It runs downhill, settles across the floor, and stays there, which is precisely the zone you will occupy on your knees with a hose in your hand. Roll the machine outdoors or open the door fully; a window above head height does nothing useful. Shut down anything with a pilot light, unplug shop heaters, and keep grinders, torches, and cigarettes out of the space altogether. Pull the battery negative cable so no circuit can throw a spark, let the air-cooled cylinder cool completely, and pour drained fuel into a sealed container rather than an open bucket you might kick over.
Confirming the Delivery Setup on This Model
The 2005 Wolverine 350 is carbureted. A manual petcock on the tank provides ON, RESERVE, and OFF, a short rubber hose delivers fuel to the Mikuni carburetor inlet by gravity, ordinary clamps hold both ends, and a float bowl drain screw at the bottom of the carburetor lets you empty it cleanly. No fuel pump, no line pressure, no electronics in the delivery path.
That is the opposite of a fuel-injected setup, where the pump and filter live inside the tank, the line stays pressurized long after the key is off, and fittings may be self-locking quick-connect couplers. This Wolverine is also a selectable four-wheel-drive machine, and the front differential and driveshaft fill the space below the engine. The hose stays short and high, so the route is unaffected, but working room down low is tighter than on a two-wheel-drive quad.
Why the Original Hose Is Finished
Two independent processes kill fuel hose. From the outside, the plasticizers that keep rubber supple leach away over the years, leaving a brittle wall. Once it stops flexing, engine vibration and chassis movement etch hairline cracks that grow deeper with every heat cycle. Riders in dry, arid country see this arrive early because low humidity accelerates the moisture loss and the hardening that follows.
From the inside, ethanol-blended gasoline is the culprit. Alcohol in modern pump fuel attracts water and gradually breaks down the inner liner, and fuel left sitting through a long layup deposits gum and varnish. The hose ends up stiff on the outside and flaking on the inside, and those flakes travel toward the carburetor jets. Twenty years of service is simply more than fuel hose is built to deliver.
Symptoms You Should Not Ignore
Look for gasoline pooling on the skid plate or floor once the machine has sat, a smell that hangs around long after shutdown, cracking or a chalky cast on the hose, and dried residue rings at the fittings where fuel has seeped and evaporated. Flex the hose gently while you inspect; cracks frequently reveal themselves only under bending.
Weigh the way the engine runs just as heavily. A hose whose liner has deteriorated can restrict flow or shed debris into the carburetor inlet, and the result is bogging under load, hesitation when you crack the throttle, and a lean surge at steady cruise. That combination reads exactly like a nearly empty tank, so plenty of owners chase jetting problems that a five dollar hose would have solved.
Old Hose Out, New Hose In
Turn the petcock to OFF, remove the seat, and pull the panel over the tank so both ends of the run are visible. Slide the pan under the carburetor, open the float bowl drain screw, empty the bowl into your container, and snug the screw back down. Move each clamp back along the hose and clear of its barb, then twist the hose a quarter turn to break the varnish bond before pulling it straight off. Never pry sideways against the petcock spigot, which cracks far more easily than a hardened hose releases. If an end refuses to move, slit the last inch lengthwise and peel it off. Note the routing and clips as the old piece comes out and keep drips clear of the front driveline.
Cut the new hose against the old for identical length, then push each end fully onto its barb past the raised bead. Do it dry — grease, oil, and silicone on a fuel fitting undermine the seal and can carry contamination into the carburetor. A stiff end will slide on after thirty seconds in hot water. Set the clamps just behind the bead on each fitting and tighten evenly, firm but never crushing the wall. Route the hose through its original guides in a smooth curve with no kinks, well away from the cylinder head, exhaust, and 4WD hardware.
Signing Off on the Repair
Open the petcock and let gravity fill the line and float bowl. Give both connections a full minute, wipe them dry with a clean rag, then check again, because a dry surface makes a slow weep visible in a way a wet one never will. Reconnect the battery, start the engine, and inspect once more at idle before the bodywork goes back on.
Finish by considering the inline filter, if your Wolverine has one between the petcock and carburetor. Sediment and varnish accumulate in that element over the years, and a restricted filter delivers the same lean, bogging symptoms as a bad hose. Replacing both together while access is open means one job instead of two, and closing the petcock whenever the machine sits for more than a few days will keep the new hose healthy far longer.
