Youth quads tend to live hard lives measured in years rather than hours. A 2005 Grizzly 80 2x4 that taught one kid to ride and then sat in the corner of a shed waiting for the next one is a textbook candidate for new fuel hose. The good news is that this little Grizzly is about as simple as a fuel system gets. It is carbureted, with a petcock on the tank and a short gravity fed hose running down to the carburetor, so there is no pressure to relieve and no pump to work around.
How the Grizzly 80 Feeds Its Engine
The 80cc single on this machine runs a small carburetor supplied entirely by gravity. Fuel leaves the tank through a manual petcock, travels down a short length of rubber hose secured with clamps at each end, and fills the float bowl. That layout makes the job easier in three specific ways: you can shut off the fuel with a twist of the valve, you can empty the carburetor through the float bowl drain instead of catching a long spill, and the hose itself is ordinary low pressure carburetor line rather than anything exotic.
This is a two wheel drive chassis, which also works in your favor. Without a front differential and its associated bracing crowding the frame, the hose run is short and largely visible once the front bodywork is off, so you can usually see both connections at the same time.
Why the Rubber Hardens and Cracks
Fuel hose ages whether the machine is running or parked. The rubber slowly loses the plasticizers that keep it soft, and the wall goes from pliable to hard and glassy. Heat from the engine and years of temperature swings speed that along, and any bend in the hose becomes a stress point once the material has stiffened. Owners in dry, low humidity regions see this happen years earlier than owners in damp climates, since arid air pulls moisture straight out of the rubber.
Ethanol blended pump gas works the other side of the wall. It carries dissolved water and gradually attacks the inner liner, and fuel that sits for a full season in a small tank leaves gum and varnish behind as it evaporates. On a youth machine that goes long stretches between rides, that stale fuel problem is the more common culprit. The result is a hose that may look serviceable while its interior is already breaking down and shedding debris toward the carburetor jets.
Symptoms Parents and Riders Notice First
- A gasoline puddle or damp spot on the floor beneath the machine after it has been parked
- A strong fuel smell in the shed or garage that does not clear
- Visible cracking, a chalky gray surface, or a section stiff enough that it will not squeeze
- Weeping at either clamp, often showing up as dust caked in a dark ring
- An engine that bogs when the throttle opens, runs lean, or acts starved even with fuel in the tank
Because this system is gravity fed, a failing hose usually does leave visible evidence. Leave a clean piece of cardboard under the quad overnight with the petcock on and you will often have your answer in the morning.
Tools, Supplies, and Fuel Safety
Collect the following before you begin: rubber or nitrile gloves, eye protection, a small drain pan and a sealed container approved for gasoline, replacement carburetor fuel hose in the correct inside diameter, fresh clamps or a small clamp kit, a razor blade, a flat blade screwdriver for the float bowl drain, and hand tools for the front plastics.
Handle the gasoline with genuine care. Vapor is heavier than air and settles at floor level right where you will be working, and a small machine in a closed shed can build up fumes quickly. Work outdoors or with the door wide open and a fan low to the ground moving air away from you, shut off pilot lights on any nearby water heater, and keep hot work lights and power tools out of the area. Cap the drain container except while you are actively pouring into it.
Removing the Old Line
Turn the petcock to the off position first. That single move stops flow from the tank and makes the rest of the job clean. Remove the seat and the front bodywork panels needed to reach the tank outlet and the carburetor inlet, and take a photograph of the hose routing and any clip that holds it before you disturb anything.
Slide a pan under the carburetor and open the float bowl drain screw to empty the remaining fuel, then close it again. Move the clamps well back along the hose at both ends before attempting to pull anything off. Twenty year old rubber often bonds to the metal barb with varnish, so rather than yanking on the petcock spigot or the carburetor inlet, slit the hose lengthwise with a razor and peel it away. Both of those fittings are far more expensive to replace than a length of hose, and the petcock body in particular does not appreciate being twisted.
Installing the New Hose and Checking for Leaks
Cut the new hose to the same length as the original. A line that is too long will sag into the exhaust or catch on something as the plastics go back on, and one that is too short puts constant tension on both fittings. Push each end fully onto its barb until it seats against the shoulder, and do the work dry. Grease, oil, and silicone on a fuel fitting all interfere with the seal the hose makes against the barb and can wash into the carburetor, so keep the surfaces clean. If the hose is stiff, a brief dip in hot water softens it enough to slide on by hand.
Set fresh clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and snug them evenly, tight enough to seal without cutting into the rubber. Reused clamps that have already been crimped once rarely hold as well. Route the hose so it follows its original path with a gentle curve, clear of the exhaust and any moving linkage, and reinstall any retaining clip you removed.
Now turn the petcock back on and watch both connections for a full minute without starting the engine. Gravity will find any weak joint quickly. Wipe each fitting with a clean dry rag and look again, then start the Grizzly 80 and let it idle while you inspect a third time. Only when both ends are completely dry should the bodywork go back on. While you are there, check the small inline filter if your machine has one on the visible hose run, since a fresh line does nothing for a clogged element.
