A 700 class V twin has enough torque to mask a fuel delivery problem for a long time, right up until it does not. Owners of the 2005 Twin Peaks 700 usually notice something is off long before they find the cause: a stumble pulling out of a mud hole, a whiff of gas around the shed, a stain on the frame that was not there last season. This is a carbureted machine with a fuel valve at the tank rather than an injection system, so the entire supply circuit is a short length of rubber and a couple of clamps — which also means one hardened hose can put fuel on the ground faster than you would expect.

Signs Worth Acting On

  • A puddle or damp ring on the floor under the engine after an overnight sit
  • Wet fuel tracks or a dust caked stripe down a frame tube below the tank
  • A persistent gasoline odor in an enclosed space with the valve turned off

The running symptoms deserve a second look. On a gravity or pump assisted carbureted feed, a crack lets air in as readily as it lets fuel out, and the engine responds to that air the same way it responds to an empty tank. That is why a hose inspection belongs at the front of any diagnosis of a lean condition on this model, not after the carburetors have already been off the machine.

Why the Hose Gets Hard in the First Place

The rubber relies on plasticizers to stay pliable, and heat cycling from the twin drives them out over the years. The hose grows stiff, then glassy, then cracks at every bend. Dry air makes it faster, drawing moisture out of the hose wall and hardening it from the outside in, so machines in arid country tend to need lines sooner than identical quads in humid regions.

Ethanol blended gasoline works from the inside. Alcohol draws in water and slowly degrades the inner liner, and the effect is at its worst when a Twin Peaks sits idle for months with fuel standing in the hose. The end state is a line that is brittle outside and soft inside, quietly shedding particles into the float bowls. If your machine has developed idle or metering complaints alongside a stiff hose, treat the hose as the likely source rather than an innocent bystander.

Understanding Your Machine's Plumbing

Follow the hose with a light before you disturb anything. The run starts at the fuel valve under the tank. On some layouts it goes straight to the carburetor inlet between the cylinders; on others a pump sits in the middle, driven by a small vacuum hose tapped off the engine, with a supply segment feeding it and a delivery segment leaving it. Confirm which one you have, because it determines how much hose you need and how many joints you will open. Being a four wheel drive machine, the routing also has to clear the front differential and driveshaft area and the additional frame structure that comes with it, so this line typically travels through more clips and clearance points than the same run on a two wheel drive quad. Setting Up Before You Start

Lay out gloves, eye protection, a sealable fuel container, replacement hose in the correct inside diameter, new clamps for each joint, a flat blade screwdriver, needle nose pliers, a socket set for the seat and plastics, a utility blade, and a stack of rags. Buy a little extra hose so a bad cut does not end the afternoon.

Ventilation is the safety point that actually matters here. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and pools near the floor where it can find a spark, so work outdoors or with the overhead door fully open rather than relying on a window. Shut off pilot lights and heaters, keep grinding and welding out of the space, and have an extinguisher within reach. Wear the gloves — fuel pulls the oils straight out of your skin.

Disconnecting the Old Line

Shut the fuel valve first so the tank stays put. Pull the seat and whatever bodywork is in the way of a clear view at both ends. Slide a drain pan into place and back out the float bowl drain screw, emptying the bowl and the downstream hose before you open a single fitting. If a pump is in the circuit, both segments will hold fuel, so catch each one as you go.

Move all clamps back along the hose before you pull. Twist the hose a quarter turn at each barb to break the varnish that has glued it there, then draw it straight off. Do not pry: the spigots are soft alloy and a scratched barb never seals cleanly again. If the rubber has bonded solid, slit it lengthwise with the blade and peel it away in pieces. Keep the removed segments in order for length reference.

Fitting the Replacement and Checking Your Work

Cut the new hose against the old, matching length exactly — excess sags toward hot exhaust and moving driveline parts, while a short piece pulls at its fittings every time the engine rocks on its mounts. Seat both ends fully past the raised bead and do it dry. Leave the grease, oil, and silicone in the cabinet: any lubricant on a barb creates a slick film that fuel eventually creeps along, and no clamp will fix that. Soften a tight hose end in hot water for fifteen seconds instead. Place new clamps just behind each bead, tighten evenly without crushing the rubber, and reseat the hose in every original clip.

Close the float bowl drain, open the valve, and let the circuit fill. Inspect each joint for beading, then hold a clean dry rag beneath every fitting for a minute to reveal slow seepage. Start the engine and let it idle to operating temperature before checking again, since warm rubber and vibration expose marginal joints that looked perfect cold. Once everything stays dry, reinstall the plastics. It is also worth renewing the inline filter or tank screen at the same time, because fresh hose cannot compensate for a restriction downstream of it on a 2005 Twin Peaks 700 with years of fuel through the system.
