Recognizing a Failing Hose
Symptoms fall into two groups, and the second group catches people off guard. Visible evidence is obvious enough, but a bad hose on a gravity fed machine frequently disguises itself as a carburetor problem.
- A wet patch or puddle on the floor under the engine after the Ozark has been parked
- A gasoline smell that lingers around the machine even with the petcock closed
- Hairline cracks, a chalky white surface, or a stretch that feels rigid rather than springy
- A soft or swollen section just behind either clamp
- Bogging, hesitation, or a flat spot as the throttle opens
- Fuel starvation symptoms with a tank that is nowhere near empty
Because nothing pressurizes this circuit, a crack in the hose lets air enter and interrupts the column of fuel headed to the float bowl. A 250 single has little reserve, so that interruption produces a stumble you feel right away. Owners who go straight to the jets often discover afterward that a couple of dollars of hose was the actual problem.
Gathering What You Need
- Fuel rated hose matched to the original inside diameter, cut long for trimming
- New clamps sized to the finished hose outside diameter
- Inline fuel filter if the machine has one in the run
- Gloves and eye protection
- Wide drain pan and a sealed container approved for gasoline
- Flat blade screwdriver, needle nose pliers, sharp razor knife
- Clean rags and a flashlight
Resist the urge to reuse the original clamps. Spring clamps lose tension after years of heat cycling, and worm gear bands corrode inside the housing where you cannot inspect them. They are the cheapest components in the repair and the ones most likely to cause a repeat visit.
Setting Up a Safe Workspace
Gasoline vapor is heavier than air. That single fact should shape where you do this job, because vapor flows down and spreads across the floor, gathering exactly where water heater pilots, furnace burners, and appliance compressors operate. A cracked window at head height accomplishes nothing. Work outdoors when weather allows, or open the garage door completely and get air moving low across the ground.
Disconnect the battery before you loosen anything. Keep flame, sparks, grinders, and extension cord connections away from the area, and stage a fire extinguisher within reach without standing up. Wear nitrile or rubber gloves throughout, since gasoline absorbs straight through skin and strips its oils on the way in. Spread soaked rags flat outdoors to evaporate rather than closing them in a container.
Disconnecting the Old Line
Close the petcock, remove the seat, and take off any panel obstructing your view of the tank spigot and the carburetor inlet. Slide the pan under the carburetor and loosen the float bowl drain screw so the bowl empties in a controlled way instead of dumping when the hose comes off.
Move each clamp back along the hose before disturbing the ends. Rotate the hose a quarter turn on the barb to shear the varnish bond that has developed, then ease it off gradually. If it stays put, slit the hose lengthwise with the razor and peel it away from the fitting instead of pulling harder. The petcock spigot and the brass carburetor inlet break long before old rubber gives up, and neither is a convenient part to hunt down.
Take note of the routing and any clip that positions the hose away from the exhaust. The Ozark is a two wheel drive quad, so there is no front differential hardware or front driveshaft in the way and the run stays short and accessible, which makes reassembly straightforward compared to a four wheel drive machine.
Installation Done Right
Cut the new hose against the old one for length, aiming for a relaxed curve with no tension on either fitting and no slack drooping toward the chain or the header. Press each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms out against the shoulder, and do it dry. Never put grease, oil, or silicone on a fuel fitting; anything slippery on the sealing surface gives gasoline a path past the clamp no matter how tight it is. If the hose is too stiff to seat, warm the end in hot water for a few seconds first.
Set each clamp just behind the raised bead so it presses hose against metal rather than unsupported rubber, and orient the screw where you can reach it later. Snug to firm and stop, since crushing the wall creates the next weak point. Reinstall the hose through every clip and confirm clearance from the exhaust by hand.
Why This Happens and How to Verify the Fix
The failure itself is a story about time. Plasticizers blended into new hose keep it flexible, and they slowly migrate out of the rubber wall and evaporate away. Once gone, the material fractures instead of bending, and heat plus vibration finish the job. Dry climates accelerate the exterior hardening by pulling surface moisture out continuously, while ethanol blended fuel degrades the inner liner because the alcohol content attracts and holds water against the rubber, worst during long stretches when the Ozark sits with fuel standing in the line.
To verify the repair, open the petcock and let the line and float bowl fill while you watch both joints for a couple of minutes. Wipe them dry with a clean rag, wait, and inspect again under good light. Start the engine, let it reach operating temperature while checking a third time, then shut it off and look once more with everything hot. Put the bodywork back on last, then leave the machine parked on clean concrete overnight and check the floor in the morning, because a slow seep needs time to reveal itself.
