Replacing the Fuel Line on Your 2005 Suzuki KingQuad 700 4x4

The 2005 KingQuad 700 arrived as Suzuki's big-bore utility flagship, and it did the job with a carburetor rather than fuel injection. That single fact makes this repair far friendlier than the same work on a later injected KingQuad. There is a fuel valve on the tank, the feed to the carburetor is a simple low-pressure run, and there is no pump waiting to spray gasoline at you when a fitting comes loose.
Establishing What You Are Working With
On this 695cc single, fuel leaves the tank through a shutoff valve and travels down a rubber hose to the carburetor inlet, held at each end by a clamp. Turn that valve to the off position and flow stops, which is the entire pressure-relief procedure on a carbureted machine. The carburetor also has a float bowl with a drain at the bottom, so you can empty the bowl deliberately rather than letting it dump into the intake. Because this is a 4x4, the hose shares its route with front driveline hardware and passes a couple of extra frame crossmembers a two-wheel-drive quad would not have, so expect the run to be a bit more sheltered and a bit harder to reach than you might guess.
How Twenty Years Ruins a Hose
Time, not mileage, is what finishes fuel hose. The plasticizers that keep the wall soft slowly migrate out under heat from the cylinder, and once the rubber stiffens it stops flexing with the chassis. Vibration then crazes the surface, and those crazes deepen until they open into the bore. In dry, low-humidity regions the hardening happens noticeably faster because ambient air constantly pulls moisture from the outer jacket, which is why an untouched hose in the high desert can look far older than its years.
Ethanol-blended pump gas attacks from the other side, absorbing water and gradually breaking down the inner liner. On a machine of this age that has sat between riding seasons more than once, that liner can be shedding gum and fine particles into the carburetor. Since gravity is doing the work of delivering that fuel, any softened section can also collapse slightly under vacuum and starve the engine intermittently.
Symptoms That Point You Here
- A puddle or damp spot under the machine, most often right below the carburetor or the fuel valve
- A strong gasoline smell in the shed even when the quad has been parked for days
- Visible cracking, a chalky surface, or a length of hose that feels hard and glassy when pinched
- Weeping at a clamp, usually showing as a caked ring of dirt where fuel has seeped and dried
- Bogging under load, a lean stumble at part throttle, or the engine acting like it is running out of fuel long before the tank is empty
A carbureted machine tends to leak visibly rather than atomizing, so a puddle is genuinely diagnostic here. Note where it forms before you clean it up.
Tools and a Word About Gasoline
- Rubber or nitrile gloves and eye protection
- A drain pan and a sealed container rated for gasoline
- Replacement fuel hose in the correct inside diameter for this KingQuad's valve and carburetor spigots
- New hose clamps or a small clamp assortment, since decades-old clamps rarely reseal well
- A screwdriver for the float bowl drain, a small flat blade, a razor knife, and sockets for the seat and side panels
- Line-clamping pliers are optional here but handy for holding fuel back while you work a fitting
Handle the fuel seriously. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles across the floor, which is exactly where a water heater pilot or shop heater draws combustion air. Work outdoors if you can. Inside, open the overhead door completely so air actually moves at ground level, shut off every flame and heating element in the building, and keep a fire extinguisher nearby. Gloves go on before the first fitting, not after your hands are already wet.
Draining and Removing the Old Line
Turn the fuel valve to off first. Remove the seat and the plastics that cover the tank and carburetor area so you can see both ends of the hose. Put your pan under the carburetor, then open the float bowl drain and let the bowl empty into it, which removes most of the fuel sitting downstream. Close the drain when it stops running.
Slide the clamps well back along the hose before pulling on anything. Old worm-gear clamps often need a wire brush on the screw before they will turn; spring clamps release with a squeeze. Twist the hose a quarter turn at each spigot to break the varnish bond rather than yanking it, and if it will not budge, slit it lengthwise with a razor and peel it off. That is much safer than pulling hard on a twenty-year-old carburetor inlet or a fuel valve body that you do not want to crack. Keep a rag under each joint as it opens, because the hose itself still holds fuel. Note the routing as you go, particularly where it clears the front differential and any frame crossmember on this 4x4 chassis.
Fitting the New Hose
Cut the replacement to match the original length. A hose left long will droop into the front driveline or lean against a hot engine case, and either one will eventually wear through. Push each end fully onto its spigot until it bottoms out, and install it dry — no grease, no oil, no silicone spray. Lubricant on a sealing surface gives fuel a path to creep along, and a low-pressure gravity feed will still find it. If an end resists, dip it in hot water for a few seconds to soften it.
Set new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly, snug enough to seal without crushing the hose wall. Route the line back through its original clips so it stays clear of the exhaust and away from anything that rotates. Double check that the hose has a gentle sweep with no kinks, since a kink on a gravity feed can starve the carburetor at exactly the wrong moment.
Leak Check and Finishing Up
Turn the fuel valve back on and let the system sit for a minute so gravity fills the hose and the float bowl. Watch both joints closely with a clean rag, then wipe them dry and look again for a bead forming. Start the engine, let it idle, and inspect once more while it runs and warms up. Blip the throttle a few times and check a final time before the plastics go back on.
While you are in there, it is worth confirming the fuel valve itself is not weeping at its flange, since a valve that has been seeping is often mistaken for a bad hose. On this carbureted KingQuad the filtration is a simple screen at the valve and the carburetor inlet rather than a sealed unit inside the tank, so if the machine still runs lean after a clean install, that screen is the next thing to inspect.
