Fuel Hose Removal and Installation: 2005 Eiger 400 4x4 Auto

If the 2005 Eiger 400 Auto has started acting starved for fuel on climbs, or you have found a suspicious damp spot on the shop floor, the hose between the tank and the carburetor is the first thing to check and usually the cheapest thing to fix. Being a carbureted machine, this Eiger keeps everything in reach: a manual fuel valve at the tank, gravity feed, one short rubber line, and barbed fittings held with clamps.
Diagnosing It Correctly the First Time
Split the evidence into what you can see and what you can feel while riding. On the visible side, look for a puddle or damp patch beneath the frame after the machine has sat with the valve open, a gasoline smell that will not clear out of a closed garage, fine cracking or chalky gray discoloration along the hose, hardened sections that do not compress when pinched, and a ring of dust glued to a fitting where fuel seeped and dried.
On the riding side, a hose that has gone stiff and lost its seal draws air rather than maintaining a fuel column, and the float bowl runs low as a result. That shows up as bogging under load, a lean stumble when the throttle snaps open, an engine that feels like it is out of gas with plenty in the tank, and extended cranking after several days of sitting. Both halves of that list point at the same inexpensive part, so check the hose before disassembling anything else.
What Turns Good Hose Into Bad Hose
The wall of a fuel line is soft when new because of plasticizing compounds blended into the rubber. Heat drives those out gradually, and by fifteen or twenty years the hose has become rigid enough to crack where it bends and to stop sealing where a clamp bears on it.
Two environmental factors decide how fast that happens. In dry, arid climates the outer wall loses moisture more quickly and develops surface checking and a chalky texture years earlier than the same hose would in humid country. From inside, ethanol-blended fuel left standing during a long idle stretch pulls water into the line and slowly attacks the liner, sometimes leaving gum or varnish that reduces flow. Since the two processes work on opposite surfaces independently, judging a hose purely by appearance underestimates its condition.
Parts, Tools, and Working Around Gasoline
- Fuel-rated hose in the original inside diameter, purchased slightly long
- Fresh clamps for the valve outlet and carburetor inlet
- Nitrile or rubber gloves plus eye protection
- A drain pan and a sealed, approved container for recovered fuel
- Flat-blade screwdriver, small sockets, needle-nose pliers, razor knife
- Shop rags and a new inline filter if one is fitted on the visible run
Respect the fuel more than the fasteners. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so instead of drifting away it sinks and pools at floor level, which is precisely where you will be positioned to reach the valve outlet. Do this outdoors, or open the shop and set a fan on the floor to move air through the space. Remove every ignition source from the area, appliance pilot lights and space heaters included, keep an extinguisher within arm's reach, and leave the gloves on for the duration.
Getting the Old Line Off the Machine
Turn the fuel valve to off. That single action isolates the tank on a carbureted quad, which is why you can skip the line-clamping pliers a fuel-injected machine requires when it has no valve and feeds from an in-tank pump. Then loosen the float bowl drain screw on the carburetor and let the bowl empty into your pan so the downstream side is dry.
Raise the seat, remove the cover over the tank, and trace the hose from the valve outlet to the carburetor inlet. Photograph the routing before touching it and note every clip. As a four wheel drive Eiger, this machine carries a front differential and drive hardware that occupy more of the space under the tank than the two wheel drive layout does, and the hose typically works past an additional clearance point on its way down. The automatic transmission does not affect the fuel path, but the belt housing and its ducting share the neighborhood, so plan to route the new hose clear of both.
Slide both clamps well back before pulling. Twist each hose end on its barb to break the varnish that has bonded them, then rock it free instead of yanking straight off. When an end has gone rock hard, slice it lengthwise with the razor and peel it away rather than prying on the fitting — an aged barb snaps with very little leverage. Wipe the varnish residue off both barbs before assembly.
Installing the New Hose the Right Way
Use the removed piece as your pattern and cut the new hose to the same length. Extra hose does not help anything; a long run sags into the exhaust shield or rubs a frame edge until it wears through. Slide the clamps on first, then push each end fully onto its barb until it seats past the raised bead.
Assemble dry, every time. Grease, oil, and silicone destroy the friction a barbed fuel joint depends on and give fuel a channel to creep out beneath the clamp, so nothing but hose touches that fitting. If the new line is stubborn, dip the end in hot water for twenty seconds and it will slide on easily. Set each clamp just behind the bead and tighten only until the rubber swells slightly, because a worm-gear clamp cranked down cuts into fresh hose and creates the next leak. Clip the line back along its original path, away from heat and clear at full steering lock, and fit a new inline filter with its flow arrow pointing toward the carburetor if one is used.
Verifying Before You Load It Up
Close the drain screw and open the fuel valve, then let the machine sit for five minutes untouched. Gravity feed builds the head of fuel that does your pressure test. Wipe both joints with a clean dry rag and look for a stain returning. Start the engine and check again at idle, then blip the throttle a few times and check once more before the bodywork goes back on.
Since this Eiger is carbureted, both connections and the fuel filter remain visible and serviceable in the open, which is a real advantage over a fuel-injected model that keeps its filter inside the tank with the pump. If the hose is new and the machine still runs lean, the next place to look is the filter and the valve screen rather than the line itself. Dry connections through all three checks mean the 2005 Eiger 400 Auto is finished.
