The 2004 Twin Peaks 700 is carbureted, feeding a liquid cooled V twin through carburetion nestled between the cylinders, and it uses a fuel valve rather than any kind of injection system or pressurized rail. Trace the run with a flashlight before you touch a clamp: you will find the hose leaving the valve at the tank, and depending on how your machine is plumbed it may run directly to the carburetor inlet or pass through a pump in the middle with a small vacuum line tapped off the engine to drive it. Knowing which arrangement is in front of you tells you how many hose segments you are actually replacing.

Mapping the Run on a 4x4 Chassis

Routing is the part that catches people out on this platform. With a front differential, driveshaft, and the extra frame structure that a four wheel drive utility quad requires, the fuel hose has more clearance points to negotiate than it would on a two wheel drive machine. It threads past frame crossmembers, sits in retaining clips, and has to stay well away from the exhaust and any driveline component that moves. Photograph the whole path or lay the hose out on the bench in the same shape it came off. That record matters more than anything else you write down during this job, because a line reinstalled outside its clips will chafe through in a season.

What Ages the Rubber Out

Fuel hose fails on two fronts at once. Externally, the plasticizers that keep the compound flexible cook out with every heat cycle from the twin, and the hose progressively stiffens until it cracks wherever it bends. Dry climates make this worse: arid air pulls moisture from the hose wall and hardens it from the outside in, so a Twin Peaks that spent its life in high desert country often has noticeably more brittle lines than one from a humid region with the same hours.

Internally, ethanol blended fuel does the damage. Alcohol attracts water and gradually breaks down the inner liner, particularly when the machine sits for months with fuel standing in the hose. What you end up with is rubber that has gone hard on the outside while softening and shedding on the inside. Those shed particles wash straight into the float bowls and jets, so an aged hose frequently masquerades as a carburetor problem on a machine of this vintage.

Symptoms That Should Get Your Attention

  • A wet patch or small puddle beneath the engine after the quad has been parked overnight
  • Fuel staining running down a frame tube below the tank
  • A strong gasoline smell in a closed garage, even with the fuel valve shut
  • Fine surface cracking, a chalky texture, or a hose that stays creased after you pinch it
  • Softness or swelling in the rubber right at a barb
  • Bogging under load, stumbling on hard acceleration, or a lean surge that feels like the tank is running low

On a twin, a partial restriction or an air leak in the supply often shows up as uneven running rather than a clean misfire, since both carburetor circuits are being starved together. Do not chase that with a jetting change until you have squeezed the hose along its whole length.

Gathering Tools and Working Safely

Stage all of it before the first fitting comes apart: nitrile gloves, eye protection, an approved container for drained fuel, replacement hose matched to the original inside diameter, new clamps for every joint you open, a flat blade screwdriver, needle nose pliers, a socket set for the seat and body panels, a sharp blade, and rags. If your machine turns out to have a pump in the circuit, buy enough hose for both segments plus a length for the vacuum line if that one is also hardened.

Take the gasoline handling seriously. Vapor is heavier than air and settles at floor level, so open the garage door completely or roll the quad outside rather than trusting a cracked window. Shut down pilot lights and heaters, keep grinders and open flame away, and have an extinguisher nearby. Wear the gloves for a practical reason: raw fuel strips skin oils quickly.

Getting the Old Hose Off

Turn the fuel valve to off. Remove the seat and enough plastic to see both ends of the run clearly. Slide a catch pan under the carburetor area and open the float bowl drain screw to empty the bowl and the low side of the hose before anything is disconnected. If a pump sits in the circuit, expect fuel in both segments and plan to catch it at each fitting.

Walk every clamp back along the hose first, then twist the hose gently on its barb to break the varnish bond that decades of fuel builds up. Pull it straight off — never lever it with a screwdriver, because these fittings are soft alloy and a scored barb will weep forever. If the rubber has fused itself in place, slit it lengthwise and peel it away. As each segment comes free, keep it in order so you can reference lengths later.

Installing and Sealing the New Line

Cut the replacement against the old piece so lengths match. On a 4x4 there is a real temptation to add slack for the longer routing, but slack sags toward heat and driveline, and a hose that is too short tugs at its fittings as the engine rocks. Push each end fully home past the raised bead, dry. Grease, oil, and silicone spray have no place on a fuel barb; the film they leave gives fuel a path to creep out from under a clamp. Dip a stubborn hose end in hot water for a few seconds instead. Set new clamps just behind the bead, tighten them evenly rather than crushing the rubber, and return the hose to every clip and guide it originally used.

Leak Check and Wrap Up

Close the float bowl drain, open the fuel valve, and let the system fill. Watch each joint for beading, then hold a clean dry rag under every fitting for a full minute — a rag catches seepage far earlier than your eyes do. Start the engine, let it idle up to temperature, and inspect again with everything warm and vibrating, since heat opens up marginal connections. Only when all joints stay dry should the panels go back on. While you are in the area, check the inline filter or tank screen too: new hose does nothing for a restricted filter, and replacing both leaves the fuel delivery on your 2004 Twin Peaks 700 genuinely sorted.
