Buy the hose before you start, and buy it in the right inside diameter. That sounds obvious until you are standing over a 2004 Eiger 400 2x4 with a drained carburetor and a length of hose that is one size too large to seal on the barb. This machine is carbureted, gravity fed through a manual fuel valve, and assembled with plain barbed fittings and clamps, which means the parts list is short and there is no excuse for guessing on it.

Shopping List and Bench Setup

  • Gasoline-rated hose matched to the original inside diameter, cut a little long and trimmed to fit
  • New clamps for both ends, or a small assortment so you have options
  • Nitrile or rubber gloves and safety glasses
  • A shallow drain pan plus a sealed, approved container for recovered fuel
  • Flat-blade screwdriver, small socket set, needle-nose pliers, and a sharp razor knife
  • Shop rags, and a fresh inline filter if this Eiger carries one on the visible run

Ventilation belongs on that list as much as any tool. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it drops to floor level and pools there rather than dispersing upward through an open window, and floor level is exactly where you will be positioned while working under the tank. Roll the quad outdoors or open the shop up and put a fan on the floor to keep air moving. Every ignition source needs to leave the space, appliance pilot lights and space heaters included, and a fire extinguisher should be within reach without standing up. Wear the gloves the whole time, since gasoline pulls the natural oils out of skin fast.

Recognizing a Hose on Its Way Out

Look for a damp patch or small puddle beneath the frame after the machine has sat with the valve open, and pay attention to a gasoline smell that lingers in a closed building hours after shutdown. Inspect the hose itself for fine cracking, a chalky gray surface, or hardened sections that refuse to compress when pinched. A ring of dust caked around a fitting is dried seepage and counts as a confirmed finding.

Then there are the symptoms that never leave a mark. A hose stiff enough to lose its seal draws air instead of maintaining a fuel column, the float bowl runs lower than it should, and the mixture leans out under demand. That comes across as bogging on a climb, a stumble when the throttle snaps open, an engine acting like the tank is dry when it is not, and longer cranking after a few days parked. All of it points to the same inexpensive part.

The Aging Mechanism Behind It

Fuel hose is soft when new because plasticizing compounds are blended into the rubber wall, and heat drives those compounds out over the years. By twenty years in, the wall has lost its elasticity and behaves like rigid tubing, which cracks where it bends and stops conforming to a barb where a clamp squeezes it.

Two things accelerate the timeline. Dry, arid air draws moisture out of the outer wall, so machines in low-humidity regions develop chalking and surface checking well ahead of identical hoses in wet climates. Ethanol-blended fuel attacks the inner liner instead, pulling water into the line whenever it sits idle for months and slowly breaking the liner down, sometimes leaving gum or varnish that restricts flow. Those are separate processes on opposite surfaces, which is why an original hose deserves replacement based on its age rather than on how it looks.

Getting the Line Off the Machine

Turn the fuel valve to off. On a carbureted quad that fully isolates the tank, and it is why line-clamping pliers stay in the drawer — those exist for fuel-injected machines that have no valve and feed from an in-tank pump. Loosen the float bowl drain screw on the carburetor next and let the bowl empty into your pan, clearing the downstream side before you break any connection.

Lift the seat, remove the cover over the tank, and follow the hose from the valve outlet down to the carburetor inlet. Photograph the routing and note each clip. Two wheel drive keeps the area under the tank relatively open, since there is no front differential or associated drive hardware to work around the way a 4x4 Eiger requires, so the run is short and both ends are easy to reach. Keep the semi-automatic transmission linkage and the exhaust shield in mind, because the new hose must be routed clear of both.

Slide the clamps well back before pulling anything. Twist each hose end on its barb to break the varnish that has bonded them, then rock the end free rather than pulling it straight off. When an end has hardened solid, slit it lengthwise with the razor and peel it away instead of prying on the fitting, since a barb of this age snaps under very little force. Wipe the varnish film off both barbs once the old hose is out.

Installation and the Leak Check

Use the removed hose as your pattern and cut the new one to match. A run left long droops toward the exhaust shield or rubs a frame edge until it wears through, so avoid leaving slack. Put the clamps on the hose before installing it, then press each end fully onto its barb until it seats well past the raised bead.

Assemble everything dry. Grease, oil, and silicone have no place on a fuel connection, because lubricant destroys the friction the joint depends on and creates a channel for fuel to weep out beneath the clamp. When a new hose fights you, dip the end in hot water for twenty seconds and it will slide right on. Set each clamp just behind the bead and tighten only until the rubber swells slightly, then stop, since a worm-gear clamp cranked down cuts into fresh hose and builds in the next leak. Secure the line back into its factory clips and install a new inline filter with the flow arrow pointing toward the carburetor if the machine uses one.

Close the drain screw, turn the valve on, and let the Eiger sit for five minutes while gravity fills and pressurizes the line. Wipe both connections with a clean dry rag and watch for a fresh stain appearing. Start the engine, inspect both joints at idle, then blip the throttle several times and inspect a third time before the cover goes back on. One practical note for future maintenance: on this carbureted machine both connections and the fuel filter stay visible where you can check them in seconds, whereas a fuel-injected model keeps its filter inside the tank as part of the pump assembly. Once nothing weeps, the 2004 Eiger 400 2x4 is ready to work.
