Every step of this repair depends on one detail, so establish it before you buy parts. The 2003 Eiger 400 Auto runs a carburetor, not fuel injection. That puts a manual fuel valve on the tank with on, reserve, and off positions, moves fuel by gravity through a single short rubber hose to the carburetor inlet, and leaves nothing under pressure once the engine stops. Barbed fittings, ordinary clamps, no couplers to unlock.
Sorting Out the Fuel Delivery Setup
That carbureted layout hands you three practical advantages. The valve is a real shutoff, so the fuel supply stops the moment you turn it, and you never need the line-clamping pliers required on an injected quad that has no valve at all. Nothing in the line holds pressure with the ignition off, so an opened fitting drips instead of spraying. And the carburetor has a float bowl drain screw, giving you a clean method for emptying the downstream side before disassembly. A fuel-injected machine offers none of those conveniences, and typically hides its fuel filter inside the tank with the pump rather than leaving it on the visible run.
What Riders Notice First
Most owners catch this through their nose or the floor. A gasoline odor that will not clear out of a closed shed, or a small puddle or damp patch under the frame after the machine sat with the valve open, both point straight at the hose. Look closer and you will often find fine cracking, a chalky gray surface, hardened spots you can feel when you pinch the line, or a ring of dust cemented around a fitting where fuel weeped and dried over months.
Some owners never see a drop and only notice how the engine acts. A stiff hose that no longer seals on its barb draws air instead of maintaining a fuel column, so the float bowl cannot keep up. The result is bogging under load, a lean stumble on hard throttle, behavior that mimics an empty tank when there is fuel in it, and extended cranking after the quad has sat a few days.
Age, Climate, and Ethanol
Fuel hose ages chemically rather than mechanically. The compounds that keep the wall soft leach out gradually with heat cycling, and eventually the rubber behaves like hard plastic. Once that happens it cracks where it must bend and loses its grip where the clamp is trying to hold it.
Where the Eiger lives matters. Dry, low-humidity air pulls moisture out of the outer wall and produces surface checking and chalkiness years sooner than a humid climate would. Ethanol-blended pump gas works the opposite surface, drawing in water when it sits idle for months and slowly breaking down the inner liner, sometimes leaving gum or varnish deposits that restrict flow. Since the two mechanisms attack from opposite sides, an original hose on a machine this old is due regardless of how it looks.
Everything You Need Within Reach

- New clamps for both connections, or a small clamp assortment
- Rubber or nitrile gloves and eye protection
- Drain pan plus a sealed, approved container for the fuel you catch
- Screwdrivers, small sockets, needle-nose pliers, and a razor knife
- Rags, and a replacement inline filter if the machine carries one where you can see it
Now the safety note that is not boilerplate. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles at floor level, exactly where your head goes when you reach under the tank. Work outdoors or with the shop open and a fan pushing air across the floor. Clear the space of ignition sources including appliance pilot lights, space heaters, and grinders, and keep an extinguisher within arm's reach. Wear the gloves; repeated skin contact with gasoline dries and cracks your hands fast.
Removal and Fitting the Replacement
Turn the valve off, then loosen the float bowl drain screw and let the carburetor bowl drain into your pan. Lift the seat, take off the cover over the tank, and expose the valve outlet along with the hose run down to the carburetor. Photograph the routing first and note every clip along the way.
Because this is a four wheel drive chassis, the front differential and its associated hardware crowd the area more than on the two wheel drive Eiger, and the hose usually navigates an extra clearance point as it drops. The automatic transmission does not alter the fuel path, but the belt housing and its cooling ducting sit in the same general region, so route the new hose clear of both. Slide the clamps well back, twist each hose end on its barb to break the varnish bond, and rock it off. Where an end has hardened solid, slit it lengthwise with the razor and peel it away instead of levering on the fitting, since a twenty year old barb cracks easily. Clean the varnish film off both barbs before proceeding.
Cut the new hose to the exact length of the old one using it as a pattern. A run left long droops into the exhaust shield or chafes on a frame edge. Slide the clamps on before installing, then push each end fully home past the raised bead. Everything goes together dry — no grease, no oil, no silicone on a fuel fitting, because lubricant kills the friction that holds the joint and gives fuel a channel to escape beneath the clamp. Hot water on a stiff hose end is the only assembly aid you should use. Set each clamp just behind the bead and tighten until the rubber bulges slightly, no further, since overtightening cuts into new hose. Fit a new inline filter with its arrow pointing toward the carburetor if one is used, and clip the line back along its factory path.
Proving the Repair Before the First Ride
Close the drain screw and turn the fuel valve on. Gravity pressurizes the line by itself, so let it sit five minutes without touching anything, then wipe both connections with a clean dry rag and watch for a stain returning. Start the engine and repeat the inspection at idle, then blip the throttle several times and check once more. Three clean passes and the 2003 Eiger 400 Auto is ready. Reinstall the cover and seat, dispose of the drained fuel properly, and note where you routed the hose so the next inspection takes two minutes instead of an hour.
