Most riders discover a bad fuel line the hard way: a stumble halfway up a hill, or a whiff of raw gas in the garage that was not there last week. The Lakota 300 is a straightforward machine to work on in this respect. It runs a single carburetor fed by gravity from the tank through a petcock, so the hose you are replacing carries no pressure and can be opened with nothing more than a shut valve and a drain pan underneath. That is a meaningful advantage over a fuel-injected quad, where the line is pressurized by an in–tank pump and has to be bled down before a single fitting comes loose.

Catching the Symptoms Before They Strand You

A hose rarely bursts without warning. It weeps, then seeps, then finally splits. Things worth acting on immediately:

  • A damp patch or an outright puddle on the floor beneath the engine after the Lakota has sat overnight
  • Gasoline odor that lingers around the machine even hours after shutdown
  • Visible checking, hairline splits, or a chalky gray cast on the hose surface
  • A hose section that feels rigid and refuses to flex when you pinch it between finger and thumb
  • Bogging under throttle, a lean surge at part throttle, or the engine behaving as though the tank is nearly empty when it is not

The last symptom trips up a lot of owners. A hardened line can collapse slightly under vacuum or shed rubber crumbs into the carburetor inlet, and the resulting fuel starvation looks exactly like a jetting problem. Before you pull the carburetor apart on a 300, squeeze the hose and look at it in good light.

What Age Does to Rubber

A 2003 machine is old enough that its original hose is well past its useful service life even if it has never leaked. Fuel hose stays flexible because of plasticizers blended into the rubber, and those slowly migrate out over years of heat cycling from the engine and repeated flexing where the hose crosses the frame. Once they are gone the wall goes stiff and glassy, and stiff rubber cracks instead of bending.

Climate accelerates the process. Riders in dry, high–desert regions consistently find hoses hardening faster than owners in humid areas, because low ambient moisture pulls water out of the rubber and drives the embrittlement inward from the outer surface. Ethanol–blended pump gas works the opposite direction, softening and swelling the inner liner while the outside continues to harden. A Lakota that sat through a long off–season with E10 in the line often has a hose that looks fine outside and is delaminating inside.

Gather Your Supplies and Set Up Safely

  • Nitrile or rubber gloves, since gasoline pulls the oils straight out of skin
  • A metal or fuel–rated plastic container with a lid for the drained gas
  • Replacement hose matched to the original inside diameter, in a length long enough to route natuRally
  • New clamps — small worm–gear or spring–type units sized for the hose you are fitting
  • A flat–blade screwdriver, pliers, and basic sockets for the seat and fender hardware
  • Shop rags and a razor knife or sharp shears for a clean square cut

Do this outdoors or with the garage door fully open. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it sinks and collects at floor level where a water heater pilot or a shop heater sits. Ventilation at ground level matters far more than a cracked window overhead. Keep the machine away from any open flame, put the cigarettes away, and give yourself elbow room instead of working in a corner.

Removing the Old Hose

Turn the petcock to OFF first. This is the piece an injected machine lacks entirely, and it makes the job simple: with the valve closed the tank holds its fuel and only the short run between valve and carburetor still has gas in it. Pull the seat and any fender panel blocking access, then slide your drain pan under the carburetor and open the float bowl drain screw to empty the bowl and the hose into the pan.

Slide each clamp back along the hose before disturbing the fitting. Old worm–gear clamps often shear their screws, and a spring clamp that has been in place for two decades has lost most of its tension anyway, so plan on replacing whatever comes off. Twist the hose gently on the barb to break the varnish that has effectively glued it in place, then work it off with steady pressure rather than yanking. If it will not budge, slit it lengthwise with a razor and peel it away — the fitting on the petcock is far more expensive than the hose.

As the old line comes free, note how it was routed. The Lakota is a two–wheel–drive chassis, so there is no front differential crowding the area and the run is relatively open compared with a 4x4 utility quad. Still, keep the hose in whatever clip or guide the factory used so it does not end up resting on the cylinder head.

Fitting the New Line

Cut the replacement to the same length as the piece you removed. Extra hose is not free insurance; a long loop chafes against the frame or drops toward the exhaust. Push each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms out, and fit it dry. No grease, no oil, no silicone spray belongs on a fuel fitting — lubricant on the sealing surface gives gasoline a path to creep past the barb, and it can migrate into the carburetor. If the hose is stubborn, dip the end in hot water for fifteen seconds to soften it.

Set the new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting so they cannot slide off, and snug them firmly without crushing the rubber. Overtightening a worm clamp cuts into the hose wall and creates the next leak. Confirm the hose has a gentle sweep with no kinks and clears the head and any moving suspension or steering components at full lock.

Leak Check and Final Details

Close the float bowl drain, then turn the petcock back to ON and simply wait. Give it several minutes with a clean dry rag laid beneath each connection, then check the rag. Gravity feed makes this an honest test: if fuel is going to escape, it will do so while the machine sits. Start the engine, let it idle a few minutes, and inspect both joints again while everything is warm and vibrating.

One last note for context. On the Lakota 300 the filtration lives in the petcock screen and the carburetor inlet, both of which you can reach and clean, which is not the case on injected quads where the filter sits inside the tank with the pump. Since you already have the hose off, take a moment to clear that screen and check the carburetor inlet for the rubber grit an old line leaves behind. A new hose feeding a plugged screen will still act starved for fuel.
