By the time a 2002 LT-F300F reaches its current age, the fuel line is usually the oldest soft part still doing critical work. It is also one of the easiest things on the machine to renew. This King Quad is carbureted and gravity fed, with a manual petcock beneath the tank as the only shutoff, so there is no fuel pressure to bleed off, no relay to pull, and no in tank pump assembly standing between you and a fresh hose.
A Real Note About Working With Gasoline
Before anything else, think about where you are doing this. The danger with gasoline is vapor, not liquid, and vapor is heavier than air. It runs downhill and settles along the floor, which puts it at the same height as water heater pilots, furnace burners, and the compressor on an old garage refrigerator. An open window six feet up does nothing about that. Roll the quad outside if the weather cooperates, or open the overhead door completely and get air moving across the ground.
Disconnect the battery before you loosen a clamp. Keep space heaters, grinders, and extension cord connections well away. Wear nitrile or rubber gloves the whole time, since gasoline soaks straight through skin and takes the natural oils with it. Lay soaked rags out flat outdoors to evaporate instead of sealing them in a trash can, and keep an extinguisher close enough to grab without moving your feet.
Parts and Tools You Will Want
- Fuel rated hose matched to the original inside diameter, cut long for trimming
- Fresh clamps sized to the new hose, spring style or small worm gear
- Inline fuel filter if your machine carries one in the run
- Gloves and eye protection
- Wide drain pan and a sealed container approved for gasoline
- Flat blade screwdriver, needle nose pliers, sharp razor knife
- Rags and a flashlight for tracing the routing path
Do not reuse the original clamps. Spring clamps lose tension over twenty plus years and old worm gear bands rust from the inside where you cannot see it. New clamps are the least expensive component of the whole repair and the one most likely to prevent a callback.
Reading the Symptoms Correctly
Fuel delivery problems on a gravity fed carbureted quad often trace back to the hose rather than the carburetor. With no pump maintaining flow, a crack that admits air interrupts the fuel column and leans out the mixture.
- Hesitation or a flat spot when you crack the throttle, worst pulling a load or climbing
- Behavior that mimics an empty tank when there is fuel to spare
- A strong, persistent fuel smell around the parked machine
- Damp streaking on the frame or a puddle under the engine after sitting
- Visible cracking, a chalky exterior, or a length that has hardened and stopped flexing
- A ring of dust glued to a fitting where fuel has seeped and dried repeatedly
Chasing a lean stumble through the jets while a cracked hose feeds air into the system is a common and frustrating detour. Inspect the line first; it costs nothing but the time to pull the seat.
Removing the Old Line
Turn the petcock off. Take the seat off and remove whatever fender fasteners or side panel you need for clear access to the tank spigot and carburetor inlet. Slide the pan under the carburetor, loosen the float bowl drain screw, and let the bowl empty so a full carb is not part of the problem when you pull the hose.
Slide both clamps back along the hose first. Then rotate the hose a quarter turn on each barb to break the varnish bond that has developed over the decades, and work it off with patience rather than force. When a hose has genuinely fused itself in place, slit it lengthwise with the razor and peel it away from the fitting. The brass carburetor inlet and the petcock spigot are the parts you cannot buy back cheaply.
Before the old hose is completely free, record where it ran. In this 4x4 chassis the front differential hardware and additional frame crossmembers occupy space that a two wheel drive machine leaves open, and the factory clips exist to keep the hose off the exhaust and clear of the front driveline. A quick photo of each clip saves guesswork during reassembly.
Fitting the Replacement Hose
Lay the new hose alongside the old and trim to the same length. Aim for a relaxed sweep that puts no tension on either fitting and does not sag into anything that moves. Push each end fully onto its barb, dry, until it seats against the shoulder. Never introduce grease, oil, or silicone spray to a fuel fitting; lubricant on the sealing surface gives gasoline a path past even a properly tightened clamp. If a hose end is too stiff to slide on, hold it in hot water for ten seconds and it will cooperate.
Place each clamp just behind the raised bead on the fitting so it squeezes hose against solid metal. Bring a worm gear clamp to firm and stop; crushing the wall builds in the next failure point. Thread the hose back through every clip you documented and confirm by hand that it clears the header and the driveline.
How Rubber Ages and What to Watch Next Time
The failure mechanism is worth understanding. Flexible additives blended into new fuel hose slowly migrate out of the rubber wall and evaporate, leaving material that cracks instead of bending. Engine heat accelerates that loss, and dry regional climates strip surface moisture continuously, so a King Quad living in arid country hardens years earlier than one in a humid area. Meanwhile ethanol blended fuel attacks the inner liner, since the alcohol content draws in water and holds it against the rubber, doing the most damage when the machine sits unused with fuel standing in the line.
Finish by opening the petcock and letting the line and float bowl fill while you watch both joints. Wipe them dry, wait two minutes, and look again. Start the engine, run it to temperature, check a third time, then shut it down and inspect once more while everything is hot. Reinstall bodywork last, then park on clean concrete overnight and check the floor at first light. Slow seeps show up given time, and finding one at home is always better than finding it out in the field.
