A fuel smell in the shed is not something to file away for later. On a 2002 Quadrunner 4x4 that odor usually traces back to a hardened hose between the petcock and the carburetor, and the fix is inexpensive enough that there is no reason to postpone it once you have confirmed the source.
Following the Evidence
Start by looking rather than guessing. The clues on a gravity-fed quad are fairly specific:
- A puddle or damp spot on the skid plate or floor under the tank area
- Gasoline odor that persists hours after the engine has been shut down
- Cracking visible on the hose, often clustered at a bend or under a clamp
- A hose that feels hard and crunchy when pinched instead of soft and elastic
- Bogging under load, hesitation off idle, or the engine acting as though it is on reserve
- A dried ring of dust and residue at either barb
Pay attention to whether the leak follows fuel level. With gravity feed, pressure at the fittings is highest when the tank is full, so a small crack that stays dry at a quarter tank can start weeping right after you fill up. A leak that comes and goes with tank level is essentially a confirmed diagnosis.
What Kind of System This Quad Runs
The 2002 LT-F250F Quadrunner 4x4 is carbureted. Fuel exits the tank through a manual petcock at the low corner, runs a short rubber hose, and enters the float bowl by gravity. Nothing is pressurized and there is no pump involved, which means the shutoff valve does all the work of isolating the system.

Those machines have no petcock, so the procedure there opens with pulling the pump fuse, running the engine until it stalls to bleed off pressure, and pinching the hose shut with clamping pliers — frequently followed by releasing a locking quick-connect coupler rather than loosening a clamp. Here you turn a valve, but confirm that OFF actually stops flow, since a valve seal hardened by twenty years can pass fuel slowly.
Why Rubber Hose Does Not Last Forever
Fuel hose is flexible because of plasticizers blended into the compound, and heat cycles slowly drive those additives out. As the hose stiffens it stops absorbing the vibration an air-cooled single sends through the chassis, and light surface checking deepens into cracks at bends and wherever a clamp squeezes the wall. Dry regional air accelerates this by pulling moisture out of the rubber, leaving a chalky texture that splits easily.
Ethanol-blended pump gas comes at the hose from the inside. Alcohol draws water into the fuel and slowly breaks down the inner liner, and a quad that sits for a season with gas standing in the hose keeps degrading the entire time. The end state is a hose brittle on the outside and softening on the inside, shedding fine material toward the carburetor jets.
Tools, Supplies, and Handling Gasoline
Assemble fuel-rated gloves, an approved sealed container for drained gas, a shallow drain pan, gasoline-rated hose matched to the original inside diameter, a fresh set of correctly sized clamps, a flat-blade screwdriver, a small socket set, a sharp utility blade, and plenty of clean rags before you begin.
Ventilation matters more than most people assume. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and pools at floor level, so an open window above the bench moves none of it while an open door with air flowing through clears the space. Work outdoors when you can. Kill water heater pilots and shop heaters, put away grinders, disconnect the battery negative cable, and let a hot exhaust cool completely. Keep fuel-soaked rags in a closed metal container outside.
Getting the Old Hose Off
Turn the petcock to OFF and let the engine idle until it stalls to empty most of the float bowl. If the carburetor has a bowl drain screw, open it over the pan and release the rest. Slide the pan under the hose run and lay a rag beneath the first fitting you intend to open.
Slide each clamp well back along the hose before disturbing the joint. Old varnish bonds the hose to the barbs, so twist it to break that grip rather than pulling hard on a brittle petcock spigot. If it holds fast, slit the hose lengthwise with a sharp blade and peel it off the fitting. Breaking the petcock outlet is the one outcome that turns a twenty-minute repair into a much larger project.
Take note of the routing on the way out. This is a 4x4, so the front differential and driveshaft take up space a two-wheel-drive quad leaves open, and the factory hose path threads around that hardware while staying clear of the exhaust. Photograph the clips and clearance points before the line is completely free.
Fitting the Replacement and Testing It
Cut the new hose to the original length. Extra material sags into the driveline or rubs a frame tube, and a short piece pulls at the fittings whenever the engine rocks on its mounts. Push each end fully onto its barb past the raised bead, and do it dry. Grease, oil, and silicone stay off fuel fittings entirely, because lubricant on the sealing surface gives gasoline a path to creep out and can wash contamination into the carburetor. Soften a stiff hose end in hot water for thirty seconds rather than forcing it.
Set clamps just behind the bead on each fitting and tighten evenly. Snug seals; crushing the hose wall creates the exact leak you set out to eliminate. Route the line back through its original guides, away from the cylinder head and the front drive components.
Open the petcock and watch both connections for a full minute with the engine off. Gravity puts fuel at the joints immediately, so a bad fit shows up fast. Wipe dry with a clean rag, look again, then start the engine and inspect at idle under good light, focusing on the upper side of each fitting where a slow weep hides. Take a short low-speed lap and check one final time after the engine has heat-cycled.
Wrap up by inspecting the petcock screen and any small inline filter while access is easy. On a carbureted 2002 Quadrunner these sit in the open and take minutes to clean or replace, unlike an injected machine that houses its filter inside the tank with the pump. A fresh hose in front of a plugged screen still starves the carburetor, so handle both and the LT-F250F will run clean.
