Draining before disassembly is the habit that separates a clean fuel line job from a mess. On a 2002 Quadrunner 250 you have two ways to get fuel out of the way before anything comes apart, and using both means the hose comes off nearly dry. Shut the petcock and let the engine consume what is in the line, then open the float bowl drain screw and empty the carburetor into a pan on your terms.

Emptying the System on Purpose

That float bowl drain screw is one of the real advantages of a carbureted machine. Rather than having leftover fuel run out wherever gravity sends it when you pop a fitting, you direct it into a container and cap it. Give the engine a moment to stall on its own after you close the petcock so the bowl and hose are already partly used up. Between the two steps, what is left when you pull the hose off amounts to a few drops caught by a rag.

Verifying the Fuel Delivery Setup

The 2002 LT-F250 is carbureted and gravity fed. A manual petcock at the tank feeds a short rubber hose that drops into a Mikuni carburetor, and nothing in the circuit is pressurized. There is no electric pump and no injector. Turning the petcock lever to off genuinely stops the fuel, so none of the preparation a fuel-injected quad requires applies here: no pump relay to pull, no cranking sequence to bleed rail pressure, no self-locking quick-connect coupler that needs a release tool. Both ends of this hose are plain barbs held by clamps.

One more contrast worth knowing. On an injected machine the fuel filter typically lives inside the tank as part of the pump assembly, out of reach without pulling the module. Everything filtering fuel on this Quadrunner sits inline where you can see it, unclip it, and replace it in a couple of minutes.

The Reasons Fuel Line Fails

Fuel hose hardens as the plasticizers that keep the rubber pliable gradually leave the wall, and every heat cycle from the air-cooled 250 accelerates that loss. Once the hose has stiffened it cannot conform around a barb tightly enough to seal, and engine vibration works fine cracks into the bends where flexing concentrates. In arid, low-humidity country the process runs faster, because dry air draws moisture out of the rubber and embrittles it from the outer surface inward.

Ethanol-blended pump gas attacks from the other side. It absorbs water and degrades the inner liner, softening it until material begins shedding toward the carburetor. Fuel that sits unused through months of inactivity oxidizes and leaves gum and varnish that can restrict the bore while the hose exterior still looks presentable. Two decades of both processes is plenty.

Symptoms to Act On

  • A damp shadow or small pool on the floor under the tank once the machine has been parked
  • Gasoline odor around the quad hours after the engine has cooled
  • Cracking, crazing, or a chalky cast on the hose surface
  • Grime caked in a ring at a fitting, left by fuel seeping and drying repeatedly
  • An engine that bogs on throttle, stumbles lean at higher rpm, or behaves as though the tank were empty when it is not

What You Need and How to Stay Safe

Collect gasoline-rated hose in the original inside diameter, new clamps or spring clips, a replacement inline filter if one is fitted, nitrile or rubber gloves, eye protection, a sealed container for drained fuel, a catch pan, a flat-blade screwdriver, needle-nose pliers, a razor knife, and clean rags.

Then take the fuel seriously. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, meaning it sinks to floor level, gathers there, and moves sideways along the ground instead of rising and clearing out. Work outdoors, or with the garage door fully open and air moving low through the space — a window cracked at head height accomplishes nothing. Keep open flames, shop heaters, hot work lights, and anything that sparks entirely out of the area. Disconnect the negative battery cable before you open a fitting, keep the drain container capped between pours, and leave gloves on throughout, since gasoline pulls the oils straight out of skin.

Off With the Old, On With the New

With the system drained, remove the seat and whichever fender or console panel blocks your view of the hose run. Trace the line from petcock to carburetor and note every clip and guide before anything moves. Walk the old clamps back along the hose with pliers, twist each end a quarter turn on its barb to break the varnish bond, and pull it off. When the rubber has hardened onto a fitting, slit it lengthwise with the razor and peel it away in strips rather than pulling harder, because the petcock spigot bends before old hose releases and a bent spigot means dropping the tank. As a 2WD chassis with no front differential under the tank, this Quadrunner gives you a clear, short route with no driveline hardware to work around.

Cut the replacement to match the original length exactly, slide the clamps on loose, and push each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms against the shoulder. Assemble dry — grease, oil, and silicone spray all give fuel a channel to creep along the sealing face and can wash contamination into the carburetor. Dip stiff new rubber in hot water for fifteen seconds instead of reaching for lubricant. Set each clamp just behind the raised bead and tighten firmly and evenly, stopping short of cutting the wall. Point any inline filter's flow arrow toward the carburetor with its weight supported, then route the line through its factory guides clear of the exhaust and cylinder head.

The Leak Check That Ends the Job

Tighten the float bowl drain screw, Reconnect the battery, and open the petcock. Give gravity a minute to fill the line and bowl, then wipe both joints with a clean, dry rag and watch closely for fuel reappearing. Start the engine and let the LT-F250 idle for several minutes while you inspect again with the machine vibrating, since that is when a marginal seal declares itself. Blip the throttle a few times and sweep a dry rag along the underside of the hose where your eyes cannot reach. Only when both connections hold completely dry should the bodywork go back on and the quad return to the trail.
