The first year Eiger 400 came out of the crate with a carbureted engine and a manual fuel valve, and two decades later that simplicity is a gift. There is no electric pump humming in the tank, no fuel pressure to bleed off, and no locking couplers to release. Gravity moves fuel from the tank, through the valve, down a short rubber hose to the carburetor. Replace the hose correctly and the 2002 Eiger will start and run exactly the way it did new.
How Fuel Hose Ages Out From Under You
Rubber fuel line is chemically alive when it is new. Plasticizers keep the wall soft and let it hug a barbed fitting under clamp pressure. Those compounds migrate out slowly with every heat cycle, and after twenty years the hose behaves like stiff tubing. Stiff hose does two bad things: it cracks where it bends around the frame, and it stops sealing where the clamp squeezes.
Climate tips the scale. In dry, low-humidity country the outer wall gives up moisture faster and develops surface checking well ahead of schedule. From the inside, ethanol-blended gas causes trouble of its own. Left standing in the line through a long idle period it draws in water and slowly attacks the inner liner, occasionally leaving gum or varnish that narrows the passage. Together those two mechanisms mean an Eiger hose can look presentable and still be shedding material toward the carburetor.
Symptoms That Deserve a Same-Day Look
- A puddle or damp patch under the machine after it has been parked, most obvious when the fuel valve was left on
- Gasoline odor that lingers in a closed garage hours after the engine cooled
- Visible cracking, a chalky gray surface, or hard sections you can feel when you pinch the hose
- A dust-caked ring at a fitting, which is dried evidence of slow weeping
- Bogging under load, a lean stumble on a hard pull, or behavior that mimics an empty tank when the tank is not empty
That last group happens because a hardened hose draws air past the fitting instead of holding a fuel column. The float bowl runs low, the mixture leans out, and the Eiger feels gutless on climbs long before it ever leaves a drop on the floor.
Gathering Parts and Handling Gasoline Properly
Set out everything you need before opening a single connection:
- Fuel-rated hose matched to the original inside diameter, cut a little long and trimmed to fit
- Fresh clamps for both ends, or a small assorted clamp kit
- Nitrile or rubber gloves and eye protection
- A drain pan and a sealed, approved container for recovered fuel
- Flat-blade screwdriver, small sockets, needle-nose pliers, and a razor knife
- A new inline filter if your Eiger has one on the visible run, plus rags
Here is the part not to skim. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it sinks and pools at floor level exactly where you will be kneeling. Do this outdoors or with the shop wide open and a fan pushing air across the floor. Shut down every ignition source in the space — appliance pilot lights, space heaters, grinders, droplights with cracked housings — and keep an extinguisher within arm's reach. Gloves matter too, since gasoline pulls the oils out of skin in minutes.
Taking the Old Hose Off
Turn the fuel valve to the off position. On a carbureted machine that is your entire shutoff procedure, and it is why you can skip the line-clamping pliers a fuel-injected quad needs when it has no valve at all. Next, back out the float bowl drain screw on the carburetor and let the bowl empty into your pan, so the downstream side is already dry when you disturb the hose.
Lift the seat and pull the plastic cover over the tank area to expose the valve and the hose run to the carburetor inlet. Before anything comes apart, note the routing and each clip the line passes through. The 4x4 Eiger carries front differential hardware and a slightly busier frame section than the two wheel drive version, so the hose threads through a couple of clearance points you want to duplicate on reassembly. The semi-automatic gearbox does not affect the fuel path, but the shift linkage in the area is one more thing to keep the new hose away from.
Slide each clamp well back along the hose, then twist the end on its barb to break the varnish that has effectively glued it there. Rock it free rather than yanking. If an end has hardened solid, slit it lengthwise with the razor and peel it off — prying at a twenty year old barb is a fast way to turn a hose replacement into a carburetor repair. Wipe the varnish film off both barbs before assembly.
Installing the New Line
Cut the replacement to match the original length. Extra hose is not harmless; a long run sags into the exhaust shield or chafes against a frame edge. Slide the clamps on first, then press each end fully onto its barb until it seats past the raised bead. Install it dry. Grease, oil, and silicone never belong on a fuel fitting, because lubricant destroys the friction that holds the joint and creates a channel for fuel to creep out beneath the clamp. If the new hose is stubborn, twenty seconds with the end in hot water softens it enough to slide on.
Position each clamp just behind the bead and snug it until the rubber swells slightly, then stop. A worm-gear clamp cranked hard cuts into fresh hose and creates tomorrow's leak. Route the line back through its factory guides, clear of exhaust heat and clear of any pinch point at full steering lock.
Confirming the Repair Holds
Close the bowl drain screw, then turn the fuel valve on and simply wait. Gravity does the pressure testing for you here. Give it five minutes with a clean dry rag wiped around the valve outlet and the carburetor inlet, then check whether a stain has reappeared. Start the engine and look again at idle, then blip the throttle a few times and check a third time.
One advantage of the carbureted Eiger worth remembering: every connection and the filter itself sit out in the open where you can see and service them. On a fuel-injected machine the filter usually lives inside the tank as part of the pump assembly, which makes a simple hose job considerably less simple. Once nothing weeps, reinstall the cover and seat and put the 2002 Eiger back to work.
