Without a front differential and its drive components crowding the area beneath the tank, the fuel hose on a 2002 Eiger 400 2x4 takes a shorter, more open path to the carburetor than it does on the four wheel drive version, and you can usually see both ends of the run without removing much more than the seat and one cover. Add in the fact that this machine is carbureted, with a manual fuel valve and simple gravity feed, and you have a genuinely easy afternoon.
Mapping the Run Before You Start
Follow the plumbing first. Fuel exits the tank through the manual valve, which offers on, reserve, and off positions, then drops through a short rubber hose to the carburetor inlet. There is no pump in the tank, no pressure held in the line after shutdown, and no self-locking couplers requiring a release tool — just barbed fittings and clamps. That is a significantly simpler picture than a fuel-injected quad presents, since injected machines have no valve to close, need pressure relieved before a line is opened, and typically hide the fuel filter inside the tank rather than leaving it accessible. On the 2x4 Eiger, closing the valve is your whole shutoff strategy and clamping pliers are unnecessary.
What Ends a Fuel Hose
Fuel line is soft when new because of plasticizing compounds in the rubber, and heat drives those out steadily over the years. Two decades on, the wall has stiffened enough that it cracks at bends and no longer conforms to the barb where a clamp squeezes it. Neither of those failures needs high mileage to happen.
Local conditions set the pace. Machines in dry, arid climates lose moisture from the outer wall faster, so chalky discoloration and fine surface checking show up years sooner than in humid regions. Ethanol-blended fuel works the opposite surface, drawing water into the line during long idle stretches and gradually degrading the inner liner, sometimes leaving gum or varnish that narrows the passage. Since those processes run independently, a hose that looks presentable from outside may already be shedding material inside.
Symptoms That Justify Pulling the Cover
- A wet spot or small puddle under the frame after the machine has sat with the valve open
- Gasoline odor lingering in a closed shed hours after the engine cooled
- Fine cracks, a chalky gray cast, or hardened sections you can feel by pinching the hose
- A ring of dust caked at a fitting, which is dried seepage
- Bogging under load, a lean stumble on hard throttle, or the feel of an empty tank with fuel still in it
- Extended cranking after several days parked
Everything in the second half of that list traces to air. A hardened hose no longer seals tightly on its barb, so it pulls air instead of holding a fuel column, the float bowl runs low, and the mixture leans out exactly when the engine is working hardest.
Supplies and Handling Gasoline Properly
Gather fuel-rated hose in the original inside diameter, new clamps for both ends, nitrile or rubber gloves, safety glasses, a shallow drain pan, a sealed and approved container for recovered fuel, a flat-blade screwdriver, small sockets, needle-nose pliers, a sharp razor knife, plenty of rags, and a fresh inline filter if this Eiger carries one on the visible run.
Take the gasoline seriously. Its vapor is heavier than air, so rather than drifting away it sinks and pools at floor level and stays there — the same air you breathe while lying beside the machine. Work outdoors when possible, or open the shop and set a fan on the floor to move air across the space. Remove every ignition source from the area including appliance pilot lights, space heaters, and grinders, and keep a fire extinguisher within arm's reach. Wear the gloves throughout, since repeated skin contact with gasoline dries and cracks your hands quickly.
Taking the Old Line Apart
Turn the fuel valve to off, then loosen the float bowl drain screw on the carburetor and let the bowl empty into your pan. Emptying the downstream side first is what keeps this job clean when you break the lower connection.
Lift the seat, remove the cover over the tank, and follow the hose from the valve outlet to the carburetor inlet. Photograph the routing and note each clip and clearance point. The uncluttered 2x4 chassis gives you good access here, but the semi-automatic transmission linkage runs through the same general area and the new hose needs to be routed clear of it, along with the exhaust shield.
Slide both clamps well back before pulling. Twist each hose end on its barb to break the varnish bond that has effectively glued the two together, then rock it off rather than yanking it straight. When an end has hardened solid, slit it lengthwise with the razor and peel it away instead of prying, because a twenty year old barb cracks long before a seized hose releases. Wipe the varnish film off both fittings once the old hose is clear.
Installation and Final Verification
Cut the new hose to match the old piece exactly, using the removed length as your template. Slack is not insurance; a long run droops toward the exhaust shield or rubs a frame edge until it wears through. Slide the clamps onto the hose first, then press each end fully onto its barb until it seats well past the raised bead.
Assemble dry. Grease, oil, and silicone must never touch a fuel fitting, because lubricant destroys the friction the joint relies on and opens a channel for fuel to weep out beneath the clamp. A stiff new hose softens enough after twenty seconds with the end in hot water to slide on without a fight. Set each clamp just behind the bead and tighten only until the rubber swells slightly, since a worm-gear clamp cranked down bites into fresh hose and becomes the next leak. Return the line to its original clips and install a new inline filter with the flow arrow pointing toward the carburetor if one is used.
Close the drain screw, turn the fuel valve on, and let the machine sit for five minutes so gravity can fill and pressurize the line. Wipe both connections with a clean dry rag and watch for a stain reappearing. Start the engine and inspect again at idle, then blip the throttle several times and inspect a third time before the cover goes back on. Keep in mind that on this carbureted Eiger both joints and the filter remain visible for future inspections, unlike a fuel-injected machine that keeps its filter inside the tank with the pump. Dry through all three checks and the 2002 Eiger 400 2x4 is ready for the trail.
