Understanding how fuel actually reaches the engine on a 2001 Wolverine 350 makes the rest of this job obvious. There is no mystery in the plumbing and no electronics between the tank and the cylinder, which is why an owner with basic hand tools can handle the whole repair in an afternoon without special equipment.
Tracing Fuel from Tank to Cylinder
The 2001 Wolverine 350 is carbureted. Gasoline leaves the bottom of the tank through a manual petcock with ON, RESERVE, and OFF positions, drops through a short length of rubber hose purely under gravity, and enters the inlet fitting on the Mikuni carburetor. A clamp secures each end of that hose. At the base of the carburetor sits a float bowl with a drain screw, which becomes your friend during removal because it lets you empty the bowl into a container rather than onto the floor.
Riders coming from a fuel-injected machine should recalibrate here. An injected quad puts a pump inside the tank, holds real pressure in the line, and often uses a locking quick-connect coupler instead of a clamp, all of which means relieving pressure and pulling a fuse before touching anything. None of that applies to this Wolverine. The petcock lever is your only shutoff and the system is dead when it is closed.
This model came with selectable four-wheel drive, and the front differential plus its driveshaft occupy the space under the engine. The hose run itself is short and stays up high, but count on tighter access and an extra frame member or two compared with a two-wheel-drive utility quad.
Signs the Hose Has Reached the End
Before ordering parts, verify the diagnosis. Look for gasoline collecting on the skid plate or floor once the machine has sat, a fuel odor that hangs around long after shutdown, and visible crazing or a chalky cast on the hose itself. Flex the hose gently: fine cracks that open under bending mean the wall is compromised. Pinch it near each clamp, since the clamped sections harden first.
Pay equal attention to how the engine behaves. A hose whose inner liner has broken down can restrict flow or push debris into the carburetor inlet, and the result is bogging under load, hesitation when you crack the throttle, and a lean surge at steady cruise. Many owners chase jetting or a dirty pilot circuit for weeks when a twenty-year-old hose was the culprit all along.
Why the Rubber Does Not Last Forever
Fuel hose fails from two directions at once. On the outside, the compounds that make rubber flexible slowly leach out, leaving a hard, brittle wall. Heat cycling from the air-cooled cylinder and constant vibration turn that brittleness into hairline cracks, and each crack works a little deeper over time. Machines living in dry, high-desert conditions harden faster because low humidity pulls moisture out of the rubber.
On the inside, ethanol-blended pump gas is the problem. Alcohol in the fuel attracts water and gradually degrades the liner, and gasoline left standing through a long off-season leaves varnish and gum behind. That combination produces a hose that is stiff outside, soft and flaking inside, and no longer trustworthy no matter how good it looks from three feet away.
Supplies Worth Having Ready
- Gasoline-rated hose matched to the original inside diameter, cut slightly long for trimming
- Two new clamps plus a spare, spring clip or small worm-gear style
- Nitrile gloves, eye protection, and a good supply of clean rags
- An approved fuel container and a shallow catch pan
- Flat-blade screwdriver, small pliers, sockets for seat and panel fasteners, sharp utility knife
- A fire extinguisher positioned where you can reach it without moving
Work outdoors or with the door fully open. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles at floor level right where you will be kneeling, so ventilation low in the space is what actually protects you. Kill pilot lights and shop heaters, disconnect the battery negative cable so nothing can arc, and let the engine cool completely before you start.
Freeing the Old Hose
Close the petcock. Remove the seat and the plastic panel over the tank so both ends of the run are in plain sight. Slide the pan under the carburetor, back out the float bowl drain screw, and let the bowl empty into your container before retightening it.
Move each clamp back along the hose and clear of its barb. Twist the hose a quarter turn to break the varnish bond that has formed between rubber and metal, then pull straight off. Do not lever against the petcock spigot with a screwdriver — the fitting will crack before a hardened hose gives up. When an end has bonded solid, slice the last inch lengthwise with your knife and peel it off the barb. Note the routing and every clip the hose passes as you extract it, and keep drips well away from the front driveline hardware.
Putting the New Hose On
Hold the old piece against the new stock and cut to matching length. Extra hose sags into the exhaust or rubs the frame; a short piece pulls constantly at both fittings. Push each end fully onto its barb, past the raised bead, working it on completely dry. Grease, oil, and silicone belong nowhere near a fuel fitting — lubricant on the sealing surface creates a path for fuel to creep out and can wash contamination into the carburetor. Thirty seconds in hot water softens stubborn hose enough to slide right on.
Set each clamp just behind the bead and tighten evenly. Firm is correct; crushing the wall causes the leak you are trying to prevent. Return the hose to its original guides in a smooth arc with no kinks, and check clearance from the cylinder head, exhaust, and 4WD components before the bodywork goes back on.
The Final Leak Check
Turn the petcock to ON and give gravity a minute to fill the line and the float bowl. Watch both fittings, wipe them dry with a clean rag, then look again — a dry surface reveals a slow weep that a wet one conceals. Reconnect the battery, start the engine, and inspect one more time at idle before reinstalling the panels.
If your Wolverine carries an inline filter between the petcock and carburetor, swap it while everything is open. Two decades of sediment collect in that element, and a restricted filter produces the same lean, bogging symptoms as a bad hose. Closing the petcock whenever the machine sits for more than a few days will keep fuel out of the new line and stretch its service life considerably.
