By 2001 many machines on the market had moved toward electronic fuel management, but Suzuki kept the LT-F250F Quadrunner 4x4 on a carburetor throughout its run. That matters for this repair, because the presence of a petcock decides how you approach every step that follows.

Establishing the Fuel Delivery Setup

The 2001 Quadrunner 4x4 is carbureted. A manual petcock at the tank's low corner — typically ON, RESERVE, and OFF — controls flow, and fuel travels a short run of rubber hose into the carburetor's float bowl by gravity. There is no electric pump, no pressurized circuit, and no injector anywhere in the system.

Compare that to a fuel-injected quad, where the absence of a petcock changes the whole opening sequence: pull the pump fuse or relay, crank until the engine stalls to relieve residual pressure, then clamp the hose shut with line pliers before separating a fitting, which may well be a self-locking quick-connect rather than a barb with a clamp. On this Quadrunner, you turn a valve. Just verify that OFF genuinely stops flow first, since a hardened internal seal on a valve this old can seep quietly.

How Age Ruins the Hose

Fuel hose is pliable because of plasticizers blended into the rubber, and heat cycles slowly drive those out. Once the hose stiffens, it can no longer absorb the vibration an air-cooled single sends through everything bolted to the engine, and light surface checking turns into genuine cracking — usually at a bend or right where a clamp compresses the wall. Dry climates advance this by drawing moisture out of the hose, leaving a chalky, glassy surface.

Ethanol-blended fuel works from the inside. Alcohol attracts water and gradually degrades the inner liner, and a quad that sits idle for months with fuel standing in the hose keeps deteriorating the whole time. The typical condition of an untouched original line is brittle outside and shedding material inside, sending fine debris toward the carburetor jets. On a machine of this age, replacement is simply maintenance.

What a Failing Line Looks and Smells Like

  • A persistent gasoline odor around the quad long after shutdown
  • A damp patch or puddle beneath the tank or on the skid plate
  • Fine cracking, a chalky surface, or a hard section you can feel by pinching
  • Bogging under throttle, hesitation on a hill, or a lean stumble at steady speed
  • Seepage that appears only with a full tank, when gravity head pressure peaks
  • A dried, dust-encrusted ring around either fitting

Preparation, Tools, and Ventilation

Set out fuel-rated gloves, an approved sealed container for drained gasoline, a shallow catch pan, gasoline-rated hose matched to the original inside diameter, a fresh set of correctly sized clamps, a flat-blade screwdriver, a small socket set, a sharp utility blade, and clean rags.

Then deal with air honestly. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles at floor level, so ventilation near the ground is the only ventilation that counts — open the door wide or push the quad outside rather than relying on a high window. Extinguish pilot lights, shut off shop heaters, put anything that sparks away, disconnect the battery negative cable, and let a hot exhaust cool. Fuel-soaked rags go into a closed metal container outdoors.

Taking the Old Line Out

Close the petcock and let the engine idle until it stalls, which empties most of the float bowl and reduces spillage. If the carburetor has a bowl drain screw, open it over the pan for the remainder. Slide the pan under the hose run and drape a rag beneath the first fitting you plan to open.

Work each clamp well back along the hose before disturbing the joint. Old fuel varnish bonds the hose to its barbs, so twist to break that seal rather than pulling straight and hard. If the hose refuses to release, slit it lengthwise with a blade and peel it off — you are throwing it out regardless, and a snapped petcock spigot is the one mistake that turns this small repair into a much larger one.

Study the routing as the hose comes free. Because this is a four-wheel-drive chassis, the front differential and its driveshaft occupy space a 2WD quad leaves open, and the factory hose path threads around that hardware while keeping clear of the exhaust header. Record the clips and guides before the line is entirely out.

Installation and Leak Verification

Cut the new hose to the original length exactly. Extra material sags toward moving parts or chafes on a frame tube, and a short piece pulls at both fittings every time the engine shifts on its mounts. Seat each end fully over its barb, past the raised bead, working it on dry. Grease, oil, and silicone never belong on a fuel fitting, because lubricant on the sealing surface gives gasoline a route to creep out and can carry contamination into the carburetor. A thirty-second dip in hot water softens a stubborn hose end.

Position clamps just behind the bead on each barb and tighten evenly. Snug seals properly; an overtightened clamp cuts into soft rubber and starts its own leak. Return the hose to its factory guides so it stays away from the cylinder head and the front drive components.

Open the petcock and watch both joints for a solid minute with the engine off. Gravity puts fuel at the fittings immediately, so a poor connection reveals itself right away. Wipe dry, inspect again, then start the engine and check at idle under good light, paying attention to the upper side of each fitting where a slow weep tends to hide. Take a short low-speed lap and look once more after the engine has heat-cycled.

Before you put tools away, inspect the petcock's internal screen and any small inline filter. On a carbureted 2001 Quadrunner these are accessible in the open where cleaning or replacement is straightforward, unlike an injected machine that keeps its filter inside the tank as part of the pump assembly. New hose behind a plugged screen still starves the carburetor, so handle both and this LT-F250F will feed reliably for many rides.
