Two decades of hauling feed, dragging firewood, and idling through pasture gates have proven the 2001 Rancher 350 4x4 to be about as durable as a mid–size utility quad gets. The one part of it that genuinely does wear out on a calendar rather than an hour meter is the short run of rubber hose carrying gasoline from the tank down to the carburetor. It costs almost nothing to replace and it is the difference between a quad that starts on the second kick of the starter and one that dribbles fuel onto your barn floor.

Knowing How This Rancher Feeds Its Engine

The 2001 TRX350 is carbureted, and that shapes the entire job. Fuel leaves the tank through a mechanical petcock, falls by gravity to the carburetor, and never sees more than a few inches of head pressure. There is no electric pump humming in the tank and no pressurized circuit to bleed down before you open a fitting. On a fuel–injected quad you would have to pull a pump fuse and crank the engine until it stalls just to make the hose safe to touch. Here you simply rotate the petcock lever to OFF and the supply stops.

That petcock also gives you a reserve position, which is worth remembering because a partially blocked or collapsing hose often masquerades as an empty tank. Being a 4x4 chassis, this Rancher carries a front differential and driveshaft that a two–wheel–drive machine does not, so the hose routing tucks a little tighter against the frame rails on its way forward. Nothing about that changes the procedure, but it does mean you should note every clip and guide before the old line comes out.

How Good Hose Turns Into Bad Hose

Fuel hose is rubber loaded with plasticizers that keep it soft and conformable. Those compounds slowly migrate out over the years, helped along by every heat cycle the air–cooled 329cc single throws at the engine bay. What began as pliable tubing becomes stiff, then glassy, and eventually splits along a crease where it bends around the frame. Owners in arid, high–desert regions watch this happen faster, because low humidity accelerates the drying of the hose wall from the outside inward.

Ethanol–blended pump gas works the opposite direction. Left sitting in the line through a long off–season, the alcohol fraction pulls in moisture and starts breaking down the inner liner, and the varnish it leaves behind gums the petcock screen and the carburetor jets. The result is a hose that is hardening outside while softening inside, which is why a 2001 machine deserves fresh line on age alone even if the outside still looks presentable.

What a Failing Line Looks, Smells, and Feels Like

  • A damp ring or an outright puddle of gasoline on the skid plate or the floor under the left side of the tank
  • A gasoline smell that lingers around the machine hours after it was shut down
  • Fine cracks, a chalky gray surface, or a section that feels hard as a pencil when you pinch it
  • Bogging under load, stumbling on hills, or an engine that acts starved even with fuel showing in the tank
  • Dust caked into a dark ring at either barb, the classic fingerprint of a slow weep that evaporates before it drips

Gathering Parts and Making the Space Safe

Have all of it on the bench before the first clamp moves:

  • Nitrile or rubber gloves, since gasoline strips skin oils fast
  • Replacement fuel hose matched to the original inside diameter and rated for continuous gasoline contact
  • A set of fresh clamps — either pinch style or small worm–gear, matching what came off
  • An approved container and a drain pan for captured fuel
  • A flat–blade screwdriver for the carburetor float bowl drain, basic sockets for the seat and fender hardware, and a sharp razor blade
  • Shop rags, more than you think you need

Do this work outdoors or with the door wide open. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles at floor level, so a fan moving air low across the workspace does far more good than an open window overhead. Keep heaters, grinders, chargers, and cigarettes out of the area entirely, and disconnect the battery negative before you start so nothing can spark.

Draining Down and Pulling the Old Hose

Turn the petcock to OFF first. Remove the seat and lift off the fender or tank cover panels that block access to the tank outlet and the carburetor inlet. Slide your pan under the carburetor, back out the float bowl drain screw, and let the bowl and the trapped hose contents empty into it. That single step removes almost all of the fuel you would otherwise spill.

Work the clamps back along the hose away from each barb, then twist the hose gently to break the varnish bond before pulling. Old rubber that has essentially glued itself to a fitting will tear the fitting before it lets go, so if it resists, slit the hose lengthwise with the razor and peel it off in two halves. Trace the removed line along the frame and note where it passed behind crossmembers and clear of the front driveline on this 4x4 layout.

Fitting the Replacement and Sealing It Up

Cut the new hose to the same length as the old piece laid out straight. Extra length is not insurance; it lets the line sag into the exhaust or chafe on a frame edge. Push each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms, and do it dry — no grease, no oil, no silicone lubricant of any kind on a fuel fitting, because any film left on the sealing surface gives gasoline a path to creep out under the clamp. If the hose is stubborn, dip the end in hot water for fifteen seconds and it will slide on.

Seat each clamp just behind the raised bead on the fitting and tighten evenly until snug, not crushed. Return the hose to its original clips so it stays away from the header and the front drive components.

Verifying the Repair Before the Rancher Goes Back to Work

Reconnect the battery, rotate the petcock to ON, and simply watch for a full minute. Gravity feed means the hose is wet and under head pressure immediately, so a bad joint shows itself right away as a bead forming at the clamp. Wipe both connections with a clean dry rag and look again. Start the engine, let it idle a few minutes, and inspect once more with a light while everything is hot and vibrating. Only then should the plastics and seat go back on, and it is worth a quick glance under the machine after your first real ride to confirm the floor stays dry.
