Most of a 2001 Rancher 350 2X4 ES will outlast its owner. The fuel hose will not. Rubber has a finite life regardless of how gently the quad was treated, and on this carbureted, gravity fed machine that hose is the single component most likely to leave a stain on the floor or a stumble in the throttle. A manual petcock under the tank shuts off flow, so the whole repair needs nothing more than hand tools and a container for the spill.
Shutting Down and Getting the Old Hose Out
Turn the petcock to OFF and watch it for half a minute, because a valve with two decades behind it can seep even when closed. If yours does, siphon the tank into an approved container before continuing. Remove the seat and the left side cover so the valve body and the run of hose down to the carburetor are exposed.
Slide a short piece of scrap hose onto the float bowl drain nipple, aim it into a pan, and back the drain screw out. Emptying the bowl before the lower fitting comes loose eliminates most of the mess this job can produce. Then push both clamps well back and twist each hose end on its barb to break the varnish bond before pulling. If a hose has cemented itself in place, slice it lengthwise with a razor and peel it away rather than snapping a brittle spigot. Being a 2WD Rancher, the path is short and unobstructed, with none of the front differential hardware that pushes the line through additional clearance points on the 4x4 versions. Take care working around the electric shift connectors and battery cabling in this area and wipe up spilled fuel immediately.
What Went Wrong With the Rubber
Fuel hose degrades chemically rather than mechanically. The compound needs plasticizers to stay flexible, and heat from the air-cooled 329cc single drives them out year after year until the wall turns stiff and glassy. Brittle hose cannot flex with a vibrating single or a chassis twisting over rough ground, so cracks open at the bends and behind the clamps where stress never lets up. Dry, low-humidity air speeds that hardening by pulling moisture out of the hose, and a quad stored uncovered adds sun damage to the tally.
Ethanol-blended pump gas works the other direction. Left standing during a long layup, it absorbs moisture and breaks down the inner liner, so the bore softens and gums while the exterior keeps hardening. The particles shed from that liner move straight into the float bowl and jets, which means a hose can look acceptable while it quietly feeds trash to the carburetor.
Symptoms That Should Get Your Attention
- Fuel pooled beneath the engine or a dark damp streak along a frame rail after parking
- A gasoline odor that will not clear from a closed garage
- Fine cracking, chalky texture, or rigid sections found by pinching the hose
- Bogging on climbs, hesitation off idle, or an engine acting starved with fuel in the tank
- A caked ring of dust and varnish at a barb, meaning fuel has been weeping past the clamp
Gravity feed provides no pressure to force fuel through a restriction, so a hose that has collapsed on the inside leans out the mixture and imitates a carburetor fault convincingly. Squeeze the hose before you pull a single jet.
Parts, Tools, and Working Around Gasoline
Have nitrile gloves, eye protection, an approved sealed fuel can, a wide drain pan, gasoline-rated hose in the original inside diameter, new clamps, a flat-blade screwdriver, needle-nose pliers, sockets for the seat and side cover, a razor knife, scrap hose for the bowl drain, and a real stack of rags ready before you begin.
The safety note here is not boilerplate. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it flows downhill and pools at floor level exactly where water heater pilot lights, shop heaters, and power strips sit. Work outdoors or with the garage door fully open and get air moving across the ground rather than overhead. Shut off every ignition source in the space, keep sparks well away from the battery, let the exhaust cool completely before your arms end up beside it, and drain fuel only into a container you can seal.
Fitting the Replacement Line
Measure the old hose and cut the new one to match. Extra length lets it sag onto the cylinder head or chafe a frame tube, and a hose cut short pulls at both barbs until it eventually walks off one of them. Push each end on dry until it bottoms against the shoulder of the fitting, and keep grease, oil, and silicone spray away from the barbs entirely. Lubricant on a sealing surface is the most common reason a properly clamped hose still seeps, because it gives fuel a ready path past the clamp. A few seconds with the hose end in hot water softens it enough to slide home unaided.
Position the new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting, orient the screws so a screwdriver can reach them later, and tighten evenly until the hose will not rotate by hand. Do not crush it, since a groove pressed into fresh rubber becomes next season's leak. Reseat the line in its original clips so it hangs clear of the header, the steering, and the shift motor wiring.
Confirming the Job Is Done
Close the float bowl drain screw, open the petcock, and leave the Rancher untouched for five minutes with a clean dry rag under each connection. Dry rags mean the connections are sound. Damp fabric means the hose is not fully seated or a clamp sits off its bead, and both are quick corrections in the garage rather than problems to discover on the trail. Start the engine and check again at idle, since vibration exposes marginal joints that hold fine when nothing is moving.
Two finishing items while the bodywork is off. Clean the sediment screen behind the petcock, which collects the flakes an aging hose sheds and will mimic fuel starvation once it clogs. Verify the tank vent hose is open and routed correctly, because a blocked vent shuts down a gravity feed system just as effectively as a failed line.
