Before a single clamp comes loose on a 2000 Wolverine 350, take five minutes to set up the space properly. Fuel work is not dangerous when handled with respect, and it is genuinely risky when it is not. This machine is carbureted, gravity fed, and mechanically straightforward, which makes the repair easy — but you are still going to have open gasoline in your hands.
Setting Up a Space You Can Work in Safely
Gasoline vapor is heavier than air. It flows downhill, settles on the floor, and lingers there, which is exactly where you will be kneeling while you work on the hose. Open the garage door completely or roll the quad outside. A window six feet up does nothing for vapor pooled at ankle height.
Shut down every source of ignition in the space before you begin. That includes obvious things like grinders and cigarettes and less obvious ones like a water heater pilot light or a shop heater cycling on its thermostat. Disconnect the battery negative cable so no switch or relay can arc while fuel is exposed. Let the air-cooled cylinder cool fully; it holds heat well past shutdown and it is the last thing you want fuel dripping onto. Keep a fire extinguisher and a stack of dry rags within arm's reach, wear nitrile gloves, and never siphon fuel by mouth.
Which Fuel System You Are Dealing With
The 2000 Wolverine 350 uses a carburetor, not fuel injection. Fuel exits the tank through a manual petcock offering ON, RESERVE, and OFF, runs down a short rubber hose under gravity, and enters the Mikuni carburetor inlet. The system holds no pressure whatsoever. That means no fuel pump fuse to pull, no relay to find, no residual pressure to bleed off, and no locking quick-connect fitting to release — all steps that a fuel-injected quad would demand before you could safely open a line. Your shutoff is the petcock lever, and the Mikuni's float bowl drain screw gives you a clean way to empty the carburetor.
Four-wheel drive is part of this machine's design, and the front differential with its driveshaft fills the area beneath the engine. The hose route between tank and carburetor stays short and high, but the extra hardware down low means less working room and a couple of additional frame members to navigate compared with a two-wheel-drive utility quad.
Recognizing a Hose on Its Way Out
Watch and listen for the following:
- Fuel puddling under the machine or wetting the skid plate after it has been sitting
- A gasoline smell that persists long after the engine is shut off
- Visible cracking, crazing, or a chalky white cast on the hose surface
- Hardness at the clamped sections, where the hose takes the most stress
- Bogging when you open the throttle, hesitation off idle, or lean surging that feels like a low tank
Do not assume a dry floor means a healthy hose. A liner that has broken down internally can restrict flow or shed particles into the carburetor inlet, producing all the running symptoms of fuel starvation without a single visible drip.
Why These Hoses Fail
Two separate processes work on fuel hose simultaneously. From the outside, the plasticizers that keep rubber pliable leach away over the years, leaving the wall hard and brittle. Vibration and chassis flex then convert that brittleness into hairline cracks that deepen with each heat cycle. Dry climates speed this up substantially, since low humidity draws moisture out of the rubber and hastens the hardening.
From the inside, ethanol-blended gasoline does its own damage. Alcohol pulls water into the fuel and gradually degrades the inner liner, and fuel left standing through a long layup leaves gum and varnish deposits behind. A hose more than twenty years old is well past its service life regardless of how it looks, which is why replacement on schedule beats replacement on failure.
Getting the Old Line Off the Machine
Set the petcock to OFF, then remove the seat and the panel over the tank so you can see both hose ends clearly. Slide a pan under the carburetor and open the float bowl drain screw, letting the bowl empty into your fuel container before you snug it back down.
Slide each clamp back and off its barb. Twist the hose gently first — that breaks the varnish bond that has formed between rubber and fitting — then pull it straight off. Never pry sideways against the petcock spigot, which will fracture long before a hardened hose lets go. If an end has bonded solid, run a utility blade lengthwise through the last inch and peel it away. Take note of the routing and every clip the hose passes through, and steer drips clear of the front driveline as you extract it.
Installing the New Hose Correctly
Lay the old hose beside the new stock and cut to identical length. Excess hose sags toward the exhaust or chafes on the frame; a short piece puts constant tension on both barbs. Slide each end fully onto its fitting past the raised bead, dry. Keep grease, oil, and silicone completely away from fuel connections — lubricant on the sealing face gives fuel a path out and can contaminate the carburetor. A dip in hot water makes stiff hose cooperate.
Set the clamps just behind the bead on each barb and tighten them evenly, firm but not crushing. Feed the hose back through its guides in a smooth arc with no kinks, then check clearance around the cylinder head, exhaust, and 4WD components before reinstalling the plastics.
Verifying and Finishing
Rotate the petcock to ON and give gravity a minute to fill the line and bowl. Study both fittings, wipe them dry, and look once more — the check on dry rubber is the one that catches a slow weep. Reconnect the battery, start the engine, and inspect at idle with the bodywork still off before you close anything up.
If your Wolverine has an inline filter between the petcock and carburetor, replace it now while everything is open. A filter loaded with rust and varnish produces the same lean, bogging behavior as a failing hose, and a new line will not clear it. Going forward, close the petcock whenever the machine will sit for more than a few days. Keeping fuel out of the hose and float bowl adds years to both.
