The King Quad 300 is carbureted and gravity fed, with a mechanical petcock on the tank handling shutoff duty, so you are not dealing with fuel pressure, an in tank pump module, or locking quick connect couplers. A screwdriver, a length of correct hose, and an hour of daylight cover it.
Pulling the Old Hose Out
Start by rotating the petcock to off, then remove the seat and enough bodywork to see both ends of the hose clearly. You want an unobstructed view of the tank spigot above and the carburetor inlet below. Position a drain pan beneath the carburetor and loosen the float bowl drain screw so the bowl empties into the pan rather than onto the frame when you disconnect things.
Ease each clamp back along the hose before touching the hose ends. On a machine this age the rubber has usually varnished itself onto the barbs, so rotate the hose a quarter turn to break that bond and then work it off gradually. If the hose refuses to release, reach for the razor knife and slit it lengthwise instead of pulling harder. A replacement hose costs a few dollars; a cracked petcock spigot or a broken carburetor fitting costs considerably more and turns a one hour job into a weekend.
Keep track of the routing as the hose comes out. Choosing the Right Hose and Clamps
Inside diameter is the specification that matters. A hose one size too large will not seal against the barb even with the clamp fully tightened, and one size too small stretches the rubber thin the moment you force it on. Buy fuel rated hose in the correct inside diameter and cut it slightly long so you can trim to fit.

Handling Gasoline Without Drama

Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, which means it flows down and collects along the floor, exactly where a water heater pilot, furnace burner, or old chest freezer compressor is waiting. Do this job outdoors when weather allows, or open the garage door completely and get air moving across the floor rather than trusting a window at head height.
Disconnect the battery before you begin, keep space heaters and extension cords out of the work area, and stage a fire extinguisher where you can reach it without stepping away from the machine. Wear the gloves the entire time, because gasoline absorbs directly through skin and pulls the oils out on its way in. Any rag you soak goes outside to dry flat, never balled up in a covered trash can.
Seating the New Line Properly
Lay the old hose beside the new piece and cut to match. You want a natural, relaxed curve with no tension pulling on either fitting, and no excess sagging into the driveline. Push each end onto its barb until the hose bottoms out against the shoulder, and install it dry. Skip grease, oil, and silicone spray completely; anything slippery on a barb sealing surface gives fuel a route past the clamp regardless of clamp torque. When a hose end is too stiff to slide on, dip it in hot water for a few seconds and it will go.
Set each clamp just behind the raised bead on the fitting so it compresses hose against metal rather than against empty rubber. Snug a worm gear clamp until it is firm and stop there, since crushing the wall creates the exact weak point you were trying to eliminate. Return the hose to every clip and guide you documented earlier.
Understanding Why It Failed
Knowing the cause helps you predict the next one. Fuel hose ages out rather than wearing out. The plasticizers that keep new rubber supple slowly leach from the hose wall, and once they are gone the material cracks instead of flexing. Engine heat accelerates that loss, and the constant vibration of a utility quad concentrates the resulting brittleness at the bends. Ethanol blended gasoline works the interior over at the same time. The alcohol content attracts water and holds it against the inner liner, softening it from within, and this happens fastest when a King Quad sits unused with fuel standing in the line for months. Between the two, a hose can look presentable while shedding material toward your carburetor jets, which is why age alone justifies replacement.
Testing Before the First Ride
Open the petcock and let fuel work its way down the line and refill the float bowl. Stand and watch both joints for a couple of minutes, wipe them dry with a clean rag, and check again under a light. Fire the engine, bring it up to temperature, and inspect a third time while it idles, then shut it off and look once more with everything hot, since heat changes the fit slightly. Put the bodywork back on last, then leave the quad parked on clean concrete overnight. A weep slow enough to hide during an idle test will still leave a mark by morning, and catching it in your driveway beats discovering it miles out.
