The Short List of What You Need

- A fresh set of clamps in the correct size, screw type or spring clip

- A sharp utility blade for trimming the new hose and slitting the old one off
- A generous stack of clean rags
Inside diameter is the specification that actually matters. A hose slightly too large will not seal even with a clamp crushing it, and one too small will not seat fully on the barb. Take the old piece along or measure the fitting before buying.
Working Safely Around Fuel
Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it sinks and gathers at floor level. A window above the bench moves none of it, while an open door with air flowing through clears the space. Roll the quad outdoors if the weather allows. Before opening a fitting, extinguish water heater pilots, shut off shop heaters, put away grinders and torches, disconnect the battery negative cable, and let a hot engine and exhaust cool completely. Fuel-soaked rags belong in a closed metal container outside, never stacked on a bench.
How the 2000 Quadrunner Feeds Its Engine
This machine is carbureted. Fuel leaves the tank through a manual petcock at the low corner, travels a short rubber hose, and drops into the float bowl on gravity alone. There is no electric pump, no pressurized rail, and no injector. Turning the petcock to OFF stops flow entirely, which is the reason this generation is easier to service than a later fuel-injected quad, where you must pull the pump fuse, run the engine down to relieve pressure, and pinch the hose with clamping pliers because no shutoff valve exists. Injected models also tend to use locking quick-connect couplers instead of barbs and clamps.
Confirm the OFF position really holds before you rely on it, since an aged internal seal can pass fuel slowly.
Why the Line Fails and How It Shows
Fuel hose stays flexible thanks to plasticizers in the rubber, and heat cycles slowly drive those additives out until the hose turns stiff and glassy. A hose that cannot flex cannot absorb vibration from an air-cooled single, so surface checking becomes cracking at bends and under clamps. Dry climates hurry this along by drawing moisture from the hose wall, and ethanol-blended gas works at the inner liner from the other direction, especially during months when the quad sits with fuel standing in the line.
Symptoms follow that pattern. Expect a lingering gasoline smell, a damp streak or puddle under the tank, visible cracks or a chalky surface, and an engine that bogs or runs lean under load. Weeping that shows only with a full tank is a classic gravity-feed clue, since head pressure at the fittings peaks when the tank is topped off. A dried, dust-caked ring at a barb is old fuel residue.
Removal Without Damage
Close the petcock and let the engine idle until it stalls, which empties most of the float bowl. If the carburetor has a bowl drain screw, open it over the pan and release the rest. Slide the pan under the hose run and set a rag beneath the first fitting.
Push each clamp well back along the hose before disturbing the joint. Decades of varnish bond the hose to the barbs, so twist the hose to break that grip rather than pulling hard. If it will not budge, slit it lengthwise with a blade and peel it off the fitting — the hose is scrap either way, and snapping the petcock spigot is the one failure that turns this repair into a far larger job. Note every clip and guide as the line comes free, and keep in mind that the 4x4 driveline places a front differential and driveshaft in space a 2WD quad leaves open, so the factory route threads around that hardware and away from the exhaust.
Fitting the New Hose and Verifying It
Cut the replacement to the original length. Excess sags into the driveline or rubs a frame tube; too short and it strains the fittings each time the engine rocks on its mounts. Push each end fully onto its barb past the raised bead, and do it dry. Grease, oil, and silicone have no place on a fuel fitting, because lubricant on the sealing surface gives fuel a path to creep out and can wash contamination into the carburetor. Warm a stiff hose end in hot water for half a minute and it will slide on easily.
Place clamps just behind the bead on each fitting and tighten uniformly. Snug seals; crushing the hose wall creates a leak where none existed. Route the line back through its factory guides, clear of the cylinder head and the front drive components.
Turn the petcock to ON and watch both joints for a full minute with the engine off. Gravity brings fuel to the fittings immediately, so a bad connection gives itself away fast. Dry the area with a clean rag and look again, then start the engine and inspect at idle under good light, focusing on the upper side of each fitting where slow seepage hides. Ride slowly for a few minutes and take a final look after a heat cycle.
One last item while access is good: check the petcock's internal screen and any small inline filter. On a carbureted 2000 LT-F250F these sit out in the open where cleaning or replacement is easy, unlike an injected machine that seals its filter inside the tank with the pump. A fresh hose ahead of a plugged screen still delivers poor flow, so handle both and the Quadrunner will run right.
