Before touching anything, it helps to be certain what kind of fuel system you are dealing with, because that single fact dictates the entire approach. The 2000 LT-F160 Quadrunner is carbureted. It runs a Mikuni carburetor fed by gravity through a mechanical petcock bolted to the tank, with no electric pump and no pressurized plumbing anywhere. That means no relay to pull, no cranking to bleed pressure, and no quick-connect couplers to release. Rotating the petcock lever to off truly shuts the fuel off, which is the whole reason this job is approachable in a home garage.
Understanding the Fuel Path on This Chassis
Fuel leaves the tank at the petcock, drops through a short rubber hose, and enters the carburetor inlet where the float valve regulates how much fills the bowl. Some machines carry a small inline filter partway along that run. Everything in the path is exposed and serviceable with hand tools, which is a meaningful contrast with injected quads that bury the filter inside the tank as part of the pump assembly. On this 160, if the engine is not getting fuel, you can put eyes on every inch of the reason.
Being a 2WD machine works in your favor as well. There is no front differential or front driveshaft occupying frame space, so the hose takes a direct route with no additional clearance points to negotiate around driveline hardware.
Why the Hose Eventually Quits
Fuel line ages from both sides at once. On the outside, the plasticizers that keep rubber pliable slowly evaporate away, a process that heat from the air-cooled cylinder speeds up considerably. The hose grows stiff, then glossy, then cracked. Riders in dry, low-humidity country see this happen faster because arid air pulls moisture out of the rubber wall and hardens it from the surface inward.
From the inside, ethanol-blended pump gas attacks the liner. Alcohol draws in moisture and degrades the inner surface, which can soften and shed material toward the carburetor. Fuel that sits stagnant through a long off-season leaves varnish and gum behind, narrowing the passage even when the hose looks acceptable. On a machine this age, calendar time alone justifies a replacement.
Symptoms That Point at the Line
Look for the following before a small problem becomes a roadside one:
- A fuel puddle or damp shadow on the floor under the tank after the quad has been parked
- A persistent gasoline smell around the machine that you cannot trace to a spill
- Fine cracks in the rubber, especially at the bends near each fitting
- Hose that feels rock hard when pinched, or that has gone soft and spongy at one end
- An engine that bogs when you open the throttle, runs lean at higher rpm, or behaves like the tank is nearly empty when it is not
What to Have Ready, and Working Safely
Assemble everything up front:
- Fuel-rated replacement hose matching the original inside diameter
- New clamps or spring clips, and a replacement inline filter if one is fitted
- Nitrile or rubber gloves and safety glasses
- A sealed container for drained gasoline and a catch pan
- Flat-blade screwdriver, needle-nose pliers, razor knife, clean rags
Take this seriously: gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it collects at floor level and spreads sideways. Work outside or with the garage door fully open and air moving across the ground, not just a window cracked at head height. Keep flames, heaters, hot work lights, and anything that sparks well clear. Disconnect the battery negative terminal before starting, and cap the fuel container instead of leaving it open beside you.
Getting the Old Hose Off the Barbs
Shut the petcock and start the engine, letting it run until it stalls so the carburetor consumes what remains. Slide the pan underneath, loosen the float bowl drain screw, and let the bowl empty into it. Remove the seat and whichever fender or side panel restricts access to the hose run on your LT-F160.
Use pliers to walk the old clamps away from the fittings. Twist the hose a quarter turn on each barb to break the varnish that has effectively glued it in place, then draw it off. If the rubber has hardened onto the spigot, do not pull harder — slit the hose lengthwise with a razor and peel it off in strips. The petcock outlet is soft metal and bending it means pulling the tank. Take note of every clip and guide the old line passed through before it is fully out.
Installing the New Line Correctly
Cut the replacement to the same length as the old piece. Excess hose sags where it can rub a frame tube or interfere with steering; too little length keeps constant tension on both fittings. Slip your clamps on before seating the ends. Push each end fully home until it bottoms against the barb shoulder, and do it dry — grease, oil, and silicone have no place on a fuel fitting. Lubricant on the sealing surface creates a path for fuel to migrate along and can wash contamination into the carburetor. A hot water dip softens stiff new hose enough to slide on with hand pressure alone.
Locate each clamp just behind the raised bead on the fitting, then tighten firmly and evenly without biting into the rubber. If you are fitting an inline filter, orient the flow direction toward the carburetor and secure it so its mass is not hanging unsupported. Return the hose to its factory guides and keep it away from the exhaust and cylinder head.
Leak Testing and Wrapping Up
Retighten the bowl drain screw, Reconnect the battery, and open the petcock. Wait a minute for gravity to refill the line and bowl. Wipe both joints dry, then watch for any bead of fuel reforming. Start the engine and inspect once more with everything shaking at idle, since vibration exposes leaks a static check will not. Blip the throttle, feel underneath the hose with a dry rag, and confirm nothing is weeping. Once the connections stay dry through several minutes of running, reinstall the bodywork and the Quadrunner is good to go.
