That design is a gift to anyone doing their own maintenance, because replacing the hose requires no pressure relief, no special couplers, and no electrical work — just a screwdriver, a drain pan, and an hour.
Why This Hose Has a Finite Lifespan
Fuel line ages out whether the quad gets ridden hard or sits under a tarp. The plasticizers that keep rubber flexible slowly leach out of the hose wall, and the material stiffens until it can no longer flex with engine vibration. On an air-cooled single, heat radiates directly into the space around the hose, and each cycle pushes the hardening a little further. Dry, low-humidity air compounds it by drawing moisture out of the rubber until the hose is brittle enough to crack when it is disturbed during other work.
Meanwhile, ethanol-blended gasoline works on the liner. Alcohol carries water into the fuel and steadily degrades the inner surface, so a hose can look fine outside while shedding fine rubber particles toward the carburetor. Fuel that sits for months leaves gum and varnish that restricts the passage and bonds the hose ends to their barbs.
Catching a Failing Line Early
The tells fall into a short list. Look for a gasoline puddle or damp patch on the floor under the engine after the machine has sat, and for a fuel odor around the tank that never quite dissipates. Inspect the hose itself for hairline cracks and a chalky, dried appearance, and squeeze it to see whether any flexibility remains. On the running side, a restricted line makes the engine bog on climbs, hesitate as the throttle opens, or stumble lean at higher rpm in a way that feels exactly like an empty tank. A ring of dirt caked at either fitting is a reliable sign fuel has been seeping and evaporating there for some time.

A Real Word About Working With Fuel
This is the one part of the job with genuine consequences. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it sinks and collects at floor level where it can reach a water heater pilot light or a spark from an extension cord well before you smell anything. Open the garage door all the way or roll the quad outside; a window high on the wall does nothing for a hazard that gathers at your feet. Let the engine and exhaust cool completely before starting, disconnect the battery negative terminal, get space heaters and hot work lamps out of the area, keep a fire extinguisher within arm's reach, and pour drained fuel into a sealed container rather than leaving an open pan on the bench.
Shutting Off, Draining, and Removing
Rotate the petcock to OFF and confirm the flow has genuinely stopped before going further. A valve left open for two decades can gum enough to seep past its seal. That mechanical shutoff is a real advantage of a carbureted machine; a fuel-injected quad has no valve and requires line-clamping pliers to hold back its in-tank pump while you work.
Remove the seat and the panels covering the tank and carburetor. Slide a pan under the carburetor, back out the float bowl drain screw, and let the bowl and lower hose empty in a controlled way. Push both clamps well back along the hose, then twist each end on its barb to break the varnish bond rather than pulling straight against it. When an end refuses to release, run the razor lengthwise down the hose and peel it away from the fitting. Note the routing and each clip before the old line is fully out. Being a 2x4, the 2000 Bayou 300 offers a short, open path with none of the front differential or driveshaft hardware that forces a longer routing on four-wheel-drive utility quads.
Installation and the Final Leak Check

Slide the clamps on before attaching either end, then press each end fully onto its barb until it seats past the raised bead. Assemble it dry, keeping grease, oil, and silicone entirely away from the fittings, since a lubricated sealing surface gives fuel a path past the clamp and robs the rubber of its grip. Hot water is the safe way to soften a tight end. Set each clamp just behind the bead and tighten only until the rubber begins to compress, then return the hose to its original guides clear of the cylinder head and header.
Close the float bowl drain, open the petcock, and watch both joints for a full minute while gravity puts fuel against them. Wipe each fitting dry and check again for fresh dampness. Reconnect the battery, start the 2000 Bayou 300, and inspect once more at idle so vibration can expose anything a static check missed. Finish with a slow ride and a last look underneath. If starvation symptoms remain after a dry, leak-free install, the petcock screen and carburetor jets are where the old hose debris will be waiting.
