A quarter century of seasons has passed under the 2000 TRX300FW, and the single most common reason one of these otherwise bulletproof air-cooled machines gets parked is a length of rubber hose that costs less than a tank of premium. The TRX300FW is carbureted, gravity fed, and fitted with a manual petcock beneath the left side of the tank, which makes this one of the friendliest fuel jobs on any four wheeler. There is no pump to depressurize and no electronics to disturb, only a valve to close and two barbed fittings to service.
Symptoms That Point Straight at the Hose
Most owners notice something odd long before the line splits outright. Catch it at the odd stage and you save yourself a walk out of the woods.
- A dark, sweet-smelling wet patch on the frame rail or on the floor beneath the engine after the quad has sat overnight
- Raw fuel odor in a closed garage that lingers even with the petcock turned off
- Surface checking on the hose that looks like dried mud, or a section that feels rigid instead of springy when you squeeze it
- Bogging on hills, hesitation off idle, or a stumble that mimics a machine running out of gas even with half a tank showing
- A crusty ring of varnish and dust at either barb, which is fuel weeping past a clamp that no longer has anything soft to bite into
On a gravity system the flow is lazy by design, so a hose that has hardened and collapsed slightly under its own clamp can starve the carburetor without ever dripping a drop. That is why the running symptoms matter as much as the visible ones.
Why Rubber Quits on an Air-Cooled Utility Quad
Fuel hose ages from both sides at once. Heat radiating off the 282cc cylinder and the exhaust cooks the plasticizers out of the outer wall, leaving it stiff and glassy, and every rut and rock you cross flexes that brittle material until fine cracks open up. Riders in arid country see the process run faster because low humidity accelerates the drying, and a machine stored outdoors under sun adds ultraviolet damage to the tally.
Ethanol works the opposite direction. Blended pump gas left in the hose over a long layup absorbs water and slowly attacks the inner liner, so the bore goes soft and gummy while the exterior turns hard. The result is a hose that sheds particles toward the float bowl and jets, and given the age of any 2000 model TRX300FW, replacement should be considered maintenance rather than repair.
Setting Up the Job Safely
Pull everything together before a fitting comes loose:
- Nitrile gloves, since gasoline pulls the oil right out of your hands
- A sealed metal can or approved fuel jug plus a wide catch pan
- Replacement hose matched to the original inside diameter and rated for gasoline, cut a little long so you can trim to fit
- Fresh clamps in the correct size, either screw type or spring style
- A flat-blade screwdriver, needle-nose pliers, and a socket set for the seat and side panel fasteners
- A razor knife for slicing a hose that has bonded itself to a barb
Do the work outdoors or with the door wide open. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles at floor level, so a ceiling fan does nothing for you while a cross breeze at ground level does. Keep the shop heater, grinder, and every other spark source out of the space entirely, and let the exhaust cool completely before you start.
Getting the Tired Hose Out
Turn the petcock to OFF and confirm it actually stops flow, because a valve of this vintage can weep past worn internals. If it does seep, drain the tank down into your jug. Remove the seat and the left side panel to expose the valve and the run of hose heading down to the carburetor. Open the float bowl drain screw with a hose leading into your pan and empty the bowl, which spares you a puddle when the lower fitting comes free. Owners of fuel-injected quads have to pull a pump fuse and bleed pressure before touching anything, but nothing on this machine holds pressure once the valve is shut.
Slide each clamp back along the hose, then twist the hose gently to break the varnish seal at the barb rather than hauling on it. If it refuses, slit it lengthwise and peel it away so the fragile plastic spigot on the petcock survives. Note the routing as it comes out. The 4x4 chassis carries front differential hardware and extra crossmembers that a 2WD Fourtrax does not, so the hose threads through clearance points worth remembering before the old piece is gone.
Fitting the Replacement
Trim the new hose to the length of the old one. Extra slack lets it sag onto the cylinder head or rub a frame tube, and a hose pulled tight will work its way off a barb over a season. Push each end on dry until it bottoms against the shoulder of the fitting. Never use grease, oil, or silicone spray to ease it on, because any lubricant on a sealing face gives fuel a path to creep out under the clamp. Dipping the hose end in hot water for a few seconds softens it enough to slide home unaided.
Set the new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and snug them evenly. Screw clamps want to be firm but not crushing, since overtightening cuts a groove that becomes next year's leak. Return the hose to its original guides and clips so it stays clear of the header and the front driveline.
Leak Check and Final Details
Open the petcock and leave the machine untouched for several minutes with a clean, dry rag under each joint. Any dampness on that rag means the connection needs attention now, not after the ride. Start the engine, let it idle, and check again while the system is warm and vibrating. Verify the float bowl drain screw is closed and that the tank vent hose is clear, since a plugged vent starves a gravity system exactly like a bad line does.
While you are in there, the petcock on the TRX300FW carries a small screen that traps sediment and often clogs alongside a deteriorating hose. Cleaning it while everything is apart is free insurance. Injected machines hide their filter inside the tank with the pump, but on this carbureted quad every part of the fuel path is right in front of you.
