The 2000 TRX300 Fourtrax closed out one of the most durable utility quad platforms ever built, and machines from that final model year are still working. What is not still working, in most cases, is the original fuel hose. On this 2WD quad the carburetor is fed by gravity through a manual petcock under the tank, so replacing that hose is a short job with a big payoff in reliability.

Confirming the Fuel System Before You Start

Pull the seat and the left side cover and the whole arrangement is visible at once. The petcock threads into the underside of the tank, typically with ON, OFF, and RES positions and a sediment screen behind the valve. A single length of hose drops from the valve outlet to the carburetor inlet spigot, clamped at both ends. A separate small vent hose serves the tank, and it earns a look during this job because a plugged vent starves a gravity feed exactly the way a collapsed hose does.

This is a carbureted machine, which changes the entire approach compared with a fuel-injected quad. Injected models keep the line pressurized from an in-tank pump, require the pump fuse pulled and the system bled before anything opens, sometimes use self-locking quick-connect couplers instead of clamps, and normally place the fuel filter inside the tank where it is not serviceable on the visible line. Here, closing the petcock renders the system inert and every component sits in the open.

Why the Hose Wore Out

Heat is the main offender. The air-cooled 282cc single radiates steadily, and each heat cycle drives more plasticizer out of the hose compound until the rubber goes stiff and glassy. Once brittle, it cracks under the vibration of a big single and the flex of a chassis crossing washboard, particularly at the bends and behind the clamps. Dry climates make it happen sooner, since low humidity pulls moisture from the hose wall, and sun exposure on an uncovered machine compounds it.

Ethanol-blended pump gas works from the bore outward. Left standing through a long layup, it draws in moisture and degrades the inner liner, leaving the inside soft and gummy while the outside keeps hardening. The material that flakes loose ends up in the float bowl and the jets. Both failure paths run on the calendar, so even a low-hour example needs the hose replaced.

The Clues Owners Notice

  • Fuel pooled under the engine or a dark wet streak along a frame rail after parking
  • Gasoline smell lingering in a closed garage well after the machine cooled
  • Chalky surface checking, visible cracks, or hard spots you can feel by squeezing the hose
  • Bogging under load, a stumble off idle, or behavior suggesting an empty tank when fuel remains
  • A dust-caked varnish ring at either barb where fuel has been weeping past the clamp

Because gravity provides the only pressure, an internally restricted hose leans out the mixture without ever leaking, which is why so many riders chase the symptom into the carburetor first.

Tools, Prep, and Handling Gasoline

Lay out nitrile gloves, eye protection, an approved sealed fuel can, a wide drain pan, gasoline-rated hose matched to the original inside diameter, new clamps, a flat-blade screwdriver, needle-nose pliers, sockets for the bodywork, a razor knife, scrap hose for the bowl drain, and a generous stack of rags.

Then handle the space itself. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and collects along the floor, right where pilot lights, shop heaters, and power strips sit. Work outdoors or with the garage fully open and get air moving low to the ground rather than trusting a ceiling fan. Shut down every ignition source, let the exhaust cool completely before your arms end up beside it, keep a rag over any open fitting, and pour drained fuel only into a sealed container.

Removal, Installation, and Leak Verification

Shut the petcock and give it time to prove it seals, draining the tank if the valve seeps. Fit your scrap hose to the float bowl drain, back the screw out, and empty the bowl into the pan so the lower fitting stays manageable. Slide both clamps back, rotate each hose end on its barb to break the varnish bond, then work it off. When a hose has fused itself in place, slit it lengthwise and peel it away instead of prying on the fitting. With 2WD there is no front differential hardware or extra crossmember in the path, so the old line lifts straight out once both ends are released.

Cut the replacement to the original length so it follows the same relaxed arc, then push each end on dry until it bottoms against the shoulder. Use nothing slick on the barbs; grease, oil, or silicone on a sealing surface is the most common reason a properly clamped hose still weeps. Hot water on the hose end softens it enough to seat. Position the clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting, tighten evenly until the hose stops rotating by hand, and quit before you crush a groove into it. Reseat the line in its original clips, clear of the header and steering.

Close the bowl drain, open the petcock, and let the machine sit five minutes with a dry rag under each joint. Start it and check again at idle, since vibration reveals connections that pass a static test. Finish by cleaning the petcock sediment screen while access is easy, because it traps the debris the old hose shed and a clogged screen will reproduce the starvation you set out to fix.
