Access is the first thing worth thinking about on a four wheel drive Rancher. The 2000 Rancher 350 4X4 ES carries a front differential, a front driveshaft, and the extra frame structure that goes with them, so the space around the engine is tighter than on the two wheel drive version even though the fuel system itself is identical. That system is carbureted: a 329cc air-cooled single, a hand operated petcock with ON, OFF, and RES positions under the tank, and one hose delivering fuel by gravity. No pump, no pressure, nothing to bleed down before you open a fitting.
Working Around the 4x4 Hardware
Take the seat off and remove enough bodywork to see both ends of the hose at once, which usually takes one more panel on a 4x4 chassis than it does on a 2WD. The petcock sits under the tank where you can reach it from the left side. From there the line drops to the carburetor inlet, threading past frame crossmembers and staying clear of the front driveline components. On this model the electric shift motor and its harness also occupy space near the engine, so the hose has to be routed with clearance from that wiring as well as from the exhaust. Photograph the path and every clip before you disconnect anything — on a tighter chassis, remembering the original routing matters more than it does on an open one.
What Makes Old Hose Let Go
Fuel hose owes its flexibility to plasticizers blended into the rubber, and heat drives those additives out over years of service. An air-cooled engine radiates that heat generously, so the hose on a Rancher hardens faster than a comparable part on a liquid-cooled machine. Once it stiffens, it can no longer flex with engine movement, and cracks begin at the outer wall and progress inward.
Two further influences accelerate the process. Dry climate air draws moisture out of the hose wall, leaving rubber brittle enough to craze at the first bend. Ethanol–blended pump gasoline works on the inner liner instead, degrading it and leaving gum and varnish whenever the quad sits unused with fuel standing in the line. On a machine from the first year of the platform, both have had more than two decades to do their work.
Symptoms That Should Move This Up Your List
Look for the following:
- Fuel spotting or a puddle on the ground under the frame, most obvious when the tank is full
- A gasoline smell that will not clear from a closed garage
- Cracking, chalkiness, or hose that has taken a permanent set
- Dried grime forming a dark ring at a fitting where fuel has been weeping
- Bogging on a climb, a lean stumble under load, or the feeling that the tank is nearly dry when it is not
Because gravity provides every bit of pressure this system has, a hose that has swollen inward starves the carburetor under load without showing any outward sign at all. If your Rancher idles cleanly and falls flat when you ask it to work, the hose belongs high on the suspect list.
Parts, Tools, and Handling Gasoline
Set out the following before beginning:
- Gasoline rated hose matched to the original inside diameter
- New clamps in the correct size, plus a spare
- Nitrile gloves and eye protection
- A lidded container approved for fuel
- Clear tubing for the carburetor float bowl drain
- Screwdrivers, pliers, a socket set, a fresh utility blade, and rags
Ventilation deserves genuine attention. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles into the lowest part of a room, where it lingers long after the smell fades at head height. Work outside when the weather allows; otherwise open the door fully and set a fan on the floor pushing air out of the building. Extinguish any pilot light in the space, keep grinders and open bulb work lights away entirely, and cap the drain container between pours.
Draining Down and Removing the Line
Rotate the petcock to OFF. Attach the clear tube to the float bowl drain nipple, run it into your container, and open the drain screw to empty the bowl and everything the hose holds below the valve. Retighten the screw as soon as flow stops so it does not get overlooked later.
Move both clamps well back along the hose before either end is disturbed. Old varnish bonds rubber to brass, so break the seal by twisting the hose gently instead of pulling hard on it. When an end will not release, slit it lengthwise with the blade and peel it off in halves; both the petcock spigot and the carburetor inlet bend far more easily than they appear. With the tighter 4x4 engine bay, having the hose come off in pieces is often easier than trying to wrestle a full length out of the frame in one go. Wipe both barbs clean afterward and check for burrs or leftover rubber.
Installation and Final Verification
Cut the new hose to match the old one, then push each end fully onto its barb until it seats against the shoulder. Assemble dry — grease, oil, and silicone all prevent the rubber from gripping and create the exact weep path you are trying to eliminate. Thirty seconds in hot water will soften a stiff end if it fights you. Position the clamps just behind the raised bead on each spigot and tighten evenly without cutting the hose, then route the line back through its original guides with clear space from the exhaust, from the front driveline hardware, and from the electric shift motor and its connector.
Turn the petcock to ON and let gravity refill the float bowl. Press a clean dry rag against each joint for two or three minutes and look for any darkening on the cloth, then start the engine and check again at idle once heat and vibration are working on the connections. Before the bodywork goes back on, inspect the strainer inside the petcock and confirm the filler cap vent breathes freely, since a blocked vent starves this carburetor exactly the way a failing hose does. Wipe everything dry, reassemble, and give the 2000 Rancher a short test ride before putting it back into service.
