The Rancher 350 arrived for 2000 as a genuinely modern utility quad, and the ES version added push-button electric shifting to a platform already known for being unbreakable. What has not lasted a quarter century unchanged is the fuel hose. This 2WD Rancher is carbureted and gravity fed with a manual petcock under the tank, so the line is a simple clamped hose and the replacement is a straightforward afternoon job.

Establishing What Kind of Fuel System You Have

Get the seat and the left side cover off and the picture becomes clear. The petcock threads into the underside of the tank with ON, OFF, and RES positions and a sediment screen behind the valve body, and one hose drops from the valve outlet to the carburetor inlet spigot with a clamp at each barb. A small vent hose serves the tank separately and deserves a check while you are in there, because a plugged vent starves a gravity system exactly like a collapsed hose does.

The electric shift hardware does not change the fuel procedure, but it does add electrical connectors, the shift control unit, and battery cabling to the area you will be working around. Keep spilled fuel away from those connectors and wipe up promptly. Note also what this carbureted setup spares you: an injected quad would keep the line pressurized from an in-tank pump, need the pump fuse pulled and the system bled before a fitting opened, sometimes use a self-locking quick-connect coupler instead of a clamp, and hide the fuel filter inside the tank where it is not serviceable on the visible line.

Why Fuel Hose Has a Limited Life

Heat from the air-cooled 329cc single is the first attacker. Each heat cycle drives more plasticizer out of the hose compound until the rubber goes stiff and glassy, and stiff rubber cannot absorb the vibration of a big single or the flex of a chassis working over rough ground. Cracks appear at the bends and behind the clamps, where the material sits under permanent stress. Dry, low-humidity climates accelerate the process, and a Rancher parked in the open collects ultraviolet damage on top of it.

Ethanol-blended fuel attacks from the inside. Standing in the line through a long layup, it draws moisture in and degrades the inner liner, leaving the bore soft and gummy while the outer wall hardens further. The debris that flakes off travels into the float bowl and the jets, which is why a hose can look serviceable and still be causing problems.

Symptoms of a Line on Borrowed Time

  • A puddle of fuel or dark damp patch under the engine after the quad has sat
  • Gasoline smell that lingers in a closed garage well after shutdown
  • Chalky checking, visible cracks, or hardened sections you can feel by squeezing the hose
  • Bogging under load, a stumble off idle, or behavior that mimics an empty tank
  • A varnished, dust-caked ring at a barb where fuel has been weeping past the clamp

Because gravity supplies all the pressure here, an internally restricted hose leans the mixture without leaking, which sends plenty of owners into a healthy carburetor looking for the cause.

Tools, Prep, and Fuel Handling

Lay out nitrile gloves, eye protection, an approved sealed fuel container, a wide drain pan, gasoline-rated hose in the original inside diameter, new clamps, a flat-blade screwdriver, needle-nose pliers, sockets for the bodywork, a razor knife, a scrap length of hose for the bowl drain, and plenty of rags.

Then take ventilation seriously, since it is the one real hazard in this job. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles at floor level where water heater pilots, shop heaters, and power strips sit. Work outdoors or with the garage fully open and get air moving low across the ground rather than trusting a ceiling fan. Shut off every ignition source, disconnect nothing electrical unless you need to but keep sparks away from the battery area, and let the exhaust cool completely before reaching past it.

Removal, Fitting, and the Leak Check

Close the petcock and confirm it stops flow, draining the tank if the valve weeps. Slip the scrap hose onto the float bowl drain, point it into the pan, and back the screw out to empty the bowl before you disturb the lower connection. Slide both clamps back, twist each hose end to break the varnish bond at the barb, and work it off. A hose that has fused itself in place should be slit lengthwise and peeled rather than pried. On this 2WD Rancher the run is short and open, without the front differential hardware and extra clearance points that lengthen the routing on a 4x4 version.

Cut the new hose to the original length so it follows the same easy arc, then push each end on dry until it bottoms against the shoulder. Use no grease, oil, or silicone anywhere on the barbs, because a slick sealing surface gives fuel a route past the clamp that additional torque will never close. Hot water on the hose end softens it enough to seat. Place the clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting, tighten evenly until the hose will not rotate by hand, and stop there. Route the line through its original clips, clear of the header, the steering, and the electric shift wiring.

Close the bowl drain, open the petcock, and let the Rancher sit five minutes with a dry rag under each joint. If both stay clean, start the engine and inspect again at idle, since vibration reveals joints that pass a static test. Clean the sediment screen behind the petcock before the panels go back on, because it holds the debris the old hose was shedding and a clogged screen will recreate the starvation you just fixed.
