The 2000 Rancher 350 2X4 was the first year of the TRX350 line, and the hose carrying fuel to its carburetor is now old enough that replacement is a matter of when, not if. This is a fully carbureted machine: a 329cc air-cooled single, a manual petcock with ON, OFF, and RES positions mounted where you can reach it under the tank, and one length of hose delivering fuel by gravity alone. There is no pump and no pressure in the system, which removes the trickiest part of doing this job on a newer injected quad.

The Slow Chemistry Behind a Failed Hose

Fuel hose is rubber loaded with plasticizers, and those additives are what make it flexible. They migrate out of the compound over years of heating and cooling, and an air-cooled Rancher subjects nearby rubber to a lot of that cycling. Once enough has left, the hose turns stiff and glassy. Stiff rubber cannot absorb chassis flex or engine movement, so cracks begin at the surface and creep inward until one of them reaches through.

Where the quad lives changes the timeline. Arid climates draw moisture out of the hose wall, hardening it faster and producing rubber that crazes the moment you bend it. Ethanol–blended pump gas attacks from the other side, degrading the inner liner and leaving gum and varnish behind whenever the Rancher sits for a season with fuel standing in the line. After more than two decades of both, the hose on this machine has been eroding from the inside and outside simultaneously.

Symptoms You Should Not Ignore

A gravity system usually warns you before it strands you:

  • A fuel puddle or damp stain on the floor under the frame, most obvious with a full tank
  • Strong gasoline odor that stays in a closed shed between rides
  • Visible cracks, chalky discoloration, or a hose that holds a permanent bend
  • Dried, dust caked residue around a clamp, which is the fingerprint of slow weeping
  • Bogging on hills, a lean stumble at throttle, or the sensation of an empty tank when fuel remains

The performance symptoms matter as much as the visible ones. A hose can swell shut internally while looking perfectly good outside, and with no pump to force fuel past the restriction, the carburetor simply runs short under load.

Gathering Supplies and Managing the Fumes

Have all of this ready before you start:

  • Gasoline rated hose matched to the original inside diameter
  • New clamps in the correct size, since original pinch clamps lose spring tension with age
  • Nitrile or rubber gloves and eye protection
  • A sealed container approved for fuel
  • Clear tubing for the carburetor float bowl drain
  • Screwdrivers, pliers, a socket set, a sharp blade, and plenty of rags

Take the ventilation piece seriously. Gasoline vapor is denser than air and collects at floor level rather than drifting out an open window, so either roll the Rancher into the open or put a fan low in the doorway moving air out. Shut down any pilot light in the building, keep grinders and exposed bulb lights well away, and cap the drain container between pours.

Draining the System and Freeing the Line

Turn the petcock to OFF, take the seat off, and remove the panels standing between you and a clear look at both fittings. Fit the clear tube to the float bowl drain nipple, run it into the container, and open the drain screw. That empties the bowl plus everything held in the hose downstream of the valve, which keeps the actual disconnection nearly dry. Retighten the screw once it stops running.

Slide both clamps well back along the hose before touching either end. Varnish bonds aged rubber to brass, so twist the hose a quarter turn to break the seal instead of hauling on it. If an end stays locked on, slit it lengthwise with the blade and peel it off in two pieces — that protects the petcock spigot and the carburetor inlet from being bent. With the two wheel drive chassis there is no front driveshaft or differential housing in the way, so this Rancher gives you an unusually open view of the entire run. Note the clip locations and the exact path before the old hose comes off.

Seating the New Hose and Clamping It

Cut the replacement to match the old length exactly. Extra length lets the hose sag onto the engine case or rub a frame tube, and a short piece pulls on both spigots every time the motor moves on its mounts. Slide each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms out, working entirely dry. Grease, oil, and silicone all belong nowhere near these fittings; a lubricated barb cannot be gripped properly and gives fuel a route to weep past. Soften a stubborn end in hot water instead.

Set the clamps just behind the raised bead on each spigot and tighten evenly until the hose is held firmly without being cut. Return the line to its factory guides, keeping generous space from the exhaust and clear of the foot shift linkage on this non–ES model. Check that the finished run curves gently with no kink pinching it anywhere.

The Leak Check That Ends the Job

Move the petcock to ON and wait a minute while gravity fills the bowl. With fuel standing under full head pressure, hold a clean dry rag against each joint and look for the faintest darkening on the cloth. Once both read dry, fire the engine and let it idle for several minutes, then inspect again with heat and vibration in play, because that is when a marginal clamp shows itself.

Before the plastics go back on, look at the small strainer inside the petcock body and confirm the vent in the filler cap is passing air. Either one, if blocked, produces the same fuel starvation a bad hose does, and ruling them out now saves you a second teardown. Wipe the area clean so any future drip is easy to spot, reassemble, and take the 2000 Rancher on a short loop before putting it back to work.
