Replacing a Cracked Fuel Line on Your 1999 Yamaha Wolverine 350

Fuel hose is the part nobody thinks about until it fails, and on a 1999 Wolverine 350 it has now had well over two decades to deteriorate. Understanding what is actually happening to that rubber makes the repair make sense, and it tells you why replacing a hose that still looks acceptable is smart rather than wasteful.
How Rubber Fuel Hose Deteriorates
New fuel hose is soft and springy because of plasticizing compounds blended into the rubber. Those compounds slowly migrate out over years of service. The wall loses flexibility, takes on a hard, glassy character, and stops absorbing the flex it was designed to handle. Once that transition happens, ordinary vibration from the air-cooled single and ordinary chassis movement start opening hairline cracks in the surface, and those cracks work inward until one reaches through.
Climate accelerates it. In dry, low-humidity country the hose gives up moisture faster and hardens noticeably sooner than the same hose in a humid region. Ethanol-blended pump gas attacks from the inside at the same time, drawing in water and degrading the inner liner while leaving varnish deposits behind, particularly when fuel sits in the system for months between rides. The practical outcome is a hose that hardens outside, softens inside, and eventually either splits or starts feeding debris into the carburetor.
Confirming What Your Wolverine Runs
The 1999 Wolverine 350 is a carbureted machine. Fuel leaves the tank through a manual petcock with ON, RESERVE, and OFF positions, travels down a short rubber hose under gravity alone, and enters the inlet on the Mikuni carburetor. There is no fuel pump, no pressure in the line, and no electrical component involved in delivery. That simplicity is your advantage. Where a fuel-injected quad requires relieving system pressure, pulling a pump fuse, and sometimes releasing a locking quick-connect coupler, this one asks only that you turn a lever to OFF and open a clamp.
This Wolverine is also a selectable four-wheel-drive machine. The hose run itself sits high and short between the tank and carburetor, but the front differential and driveshaft take up room below the engine that a two-wheel-drive utility quad leaves open. Expect slightly tighter access and a couple of extra structural members to reach past.
Catching a Bad Line Before It Strands You
Symptoms fall into two categories: things you see and smell, and things you feel while riding.
- Gasoline collecting on the skid plate or dripping onto the floor after the machine has been parked
- A strong fuel odor around the quad, most obvious in a closed garage
- Fine cracking on the hose that opens up when you flex it, or a stiff section that will not compress under your fingers
- Dried, dust-caked residue rings at either fitting where fuel has seeped and evaporated
- Bogging under load, hesitation off idle, or lean surging at steady throttle as flow becomes restricted
That last group of symptoms is the one riders misdiagnose. A hose whose liner has broken down can partially collapse or plug the carburetor inlet with debris, starving the engine without ever leaving a wet spot. If your Wolverine acts like it is low on fuel with a half tank, the hose belongs on your suspect list.
Tools, Supplies, and Ventilation
Gather these before you open anything:
- Gasoline-rated replacement hose matched to the original inside diameter
- Two new clamps plus a spare, either spring clips or small worm-gear bands
- Nitrile gloves, eye protection, and plenty of clean rags
- An approved fuel container and a shallow drain pan
- Screwdriver, pliers, sockets for the seat and side panels, and a sharp knife
Work outdoors or with the door wide open. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and collects at floor level, exactly where you will be kneeling, so ventilation low in the space is what counts. Kill every ignition source nearby, including pilot lights and shop heaters, disconnect the battery negative cable, and let the engine cool fully before you begin.
Taking the Old Hose Out
Close the petcock, then pull the seat and the plastic covering the tank for clear access to both ends. Set your pan beneath the carburetor, back out the float bowl drain screw, and let the bowl drain into your container before retightening it. Doing this first means far less fuel comes out when you break the hose loose.
Work each clamp back along the hose, clear of its barb. Give the hose a gentle twist to break the varnish bond, then pull it straight off. Resist the urge to lever it sideways with a screwdriver, since the petcock spigot will crack before a hardened hose releases. For an end that has effectively glued itself on, slit the last inch lengthwise and peel the rubber away from the barb. Trace the routing as the hose comes free so the replacement follows the same path, and keep drips away from the front drive components.
Fitting the Replacement
Measure the new hose against the old and cut it to the same length. Push each end all the way onto its barb until it seats past the bead, and do it completely dry. Grease, oil, and silicone must stay off fuel fittings; they undermine the seal and can carry contamination straight into the carburetor. Hot water for half a minute softens a stiff hose end enough to slide on without a fight.
Position the clamps just behind the bead at each fitting and tighten evenly to firm, not crushing. Return the hose to its original clips with a smooth curve, no kinks or tight bends, and verify clearance from the cylinder head, the exhaust, and the 4WD hardware before the bodywork goes back on.
Leak Check and Wrap Up
Turn the petcock to ON and let the line fill. Give both fittings a full minute of attention, wipe them dry with a clean rag, and look again — dry rubber shows a weep that wet rubber hides. Reconnect the battery, start the engine, and inspect once more at idle before the panels go back on.
If an inline filter is fitted between petcock and carburetor on your machine, this is the moment to replace it. Two decades of rust and varnish accumulate in that element, and a restricted filter mimics a failing hose perfectly. Between fresh hose, new clamps, and a clean filter, your 1999 Wolverine 350 has a fuel supply you can stop thinking about.
