The Bear Tracker was built to be simple, and after more than two decades that simplicity works in your favor. This 1999 model runs an air-cooled single with a carburetor, fed by gravity through a short rubber hose from a fuel valve on the tank. There is no electric pump, nothing under pressure, and a float bowl with a drain at the bottom, which makes the job dramatically easier than the same work on a modern fuel-injected quad where you have to bleed pressure before touching a fitting.

Confirming the Fuel System Before You Start

Take a minute to look under the front fender and the tank cover before ordering parts. On a carbureted Bear Tracker you should find a manual fuel valve at the tank, often with a reserve position, a length of hose running down to the carburetor inlet, and simple clamps at both ends. Because flow stops when that valve is closed, you do not need line-clamping pliers, a fuse to pull, or the depressurizing routine an injected machine demands. You also get a serviceable float bowl drain, which is the cleanest way to empty the carburetor before the hose comes off.

Two Decades of Hardening

Fuel hose has a service life measured in years, not hours, and a 1999 machine has had plenty of both. The rubber relies on plasticizers to stay flexible, and heat cycles from the engine plus simple aging drive those compounds out. The hose stiffens, then glazes, then finally cracks at the bends where the chassis flexes underneath it. Once it hardens, a clamp cannot pull it tight against the barb any more and fuel begins to weep at the fitting.

Climate accelerates the process. In dry, low-humidity regions the air steadily draws moisture from the hose wall and hardens it from the outer surface inward, and a Bear Tracker that has lived outdoors in arid country may have hose that feels like plastic tubing. Ethanol-blended fuel attacks from the other side, pulling water into the system and breaking down the inner liner while leaving gum in the small carburetor passages downstream. Any original hose still on this machine is long overdue.

How to Tell the Hose Is Failing

These are the symptoms that mean it is time:

  • A gasoline puddle or damp ring on the ground under the machine after it has been parked
  • A strong fuel smell around the quad, which on a gravity-fed system usually means fuel is escaping while it sits
  • Visible cracks, a chalky white surface, or a stiff length of hose that will not pinch closed
  • Bogging when the throttle opens, a lean surge at part throttle, or stalling that acts like an empty tank
  • Fuel weeping at the valve or the carburetor inlet, often marked by a band of caked dust at the fitting

Unlike an injected quad, where a pressurized pinhole can atomize fuel and evaporate it before a drop lands, a gravity system leaks slowly and visibly. Any wet spot beneath the tank on this Bear Tracker deserves attention that day.

Gathering What You Need

Set out the following before you begin:

  • Rubber or nitrile gloves, since gasoline absorbs through skin readily
  • A drain pan and an approved container for the fuel you recover
  • New hose in the correct inside diameter for this machine, plus a clamp kit
  • Pliers for spring clamps or a small flat-blade driver for worm-gear clamps
  • A razor knife and a good pile of rags
  • Hand tools for the seat and the plastic panels around the tank

Handle the gasoline properly. Vapor is heavier than air, sinks to floor level, and travels toward water heater pilots and shop heaters waiting down there. Work outdoors or with the door completely open, keep flame and grinding sparks away, and put an extinguisher on the ground next to you rather than across the shop.

Draining and Removing the Old Line

Turn the fuel valve to off first. Open the float bowl drain screw and let the carburetor empty into your pan, which keeps the mess manageable once the hose separates. Then pull the seat and any plastics standing between you and the hose run so you can see both ends clearly.

Slide each clamp back along the hose before you break the joint. Twist the hose gently on the barb to release the varnish that has effectively glued it in place rather than pulling hard, since a fitting this old does not need extra stress. If an end refuses to come loose, slit it lengthwise with the razor and peel it off. Note the routing as it comes out. The Bear Tracker is a two-wheel-drive machine with an uncluttered front end, so the hose takes a short and direct path with none of the front differential and driveshaft clearance points that complicate a four-wheel-drive quad, but it still needs to hang clear of the exhaust and stay slack enough not to tug when the bars turn.

Fitting and Sealing the New Hose

Cut the replacement to the same length as the piece you removed. Excess hose kinks or drifts toward heat, and a short piece pulls at both barbs constantly. Push each end on dry until it bottoms out against the shoulder, covering the whole barb rather than perching on the tip. Skip grease, oil, and silicone entirely; a lubricated sealing surface only gives fuel somewhere to weep. If an end resists, hold it in hot water for a few seconds and it will slide right on.

Position fresh clamps behind the bead at the valve and at the carburetor and tighten them evenly. Snug is the goal, because an aged carburetor inlet does not tolerate excessive clamp force. Close the float bowl drain, then open the fuel valve and watch both connections for a couple of minutes. Gravity feed makes this test immediate: fuel reaches the hose right away, so a poor seal shows itself before you ever hit the starter.

Final Inspection and Cleanup

Wipe both fittings with a clean, light-colored rag so any new moisture stands out. Start the engine, let it idle, and inspect again while it is running, then take a short lap around the yard and check one final time with the engine warm. Look for fuel tracking down the hose or collecting at a clamp edge rather than just for drips on the ground.

One useful contrast worth knowing: injected machines hide their fuel filter inside the tank as part of the pump assembly, out of reach without pulling the whole unit. A carbureted Bear Tracker keeps filtration accessible at the tank outlet and valve, so if fuel delivery still feels weak after a fresh hose, you can inspect that side without dropping the tank apart.
