This model runs a carburetor fed purely by gravity, with a manual petcock on the tank as the only shutoff, which means the hose in question carries fuel at nothing more than the pressure of the column above it. That simplicity is what makes the replacement approachable in an afternoon.

Getting Set Up for the Job

Buy the hose before you touch anything, and buy it by inside diameter rather than by guess. The clamp has to seal the hose against a specific barb size, and being one size off in either direction guarantees a leak or a fight.

  • Gasoline rated fuel hose in the correct inside diameter, cut generously
  • Fresh clamps, spring or worm gear, matched to the hose outside diameter
  • Inline fuel filter if your machine is fitted with one
  • Rubber gloves and safety glasses
  • Drain pan and a sealed fuel container
  • Screwdriver, pliers, razor knife, rags, flashlight

Choose your workspace deliberately. Gasoline vapor sinks and travels along the floor, which puts it in reach of every pilot light and compressor in a closed garage. Roll the quad outside if you can, or open the door completely and get air moving at ground level. Disconnect the battery, keep sparks and open flame out of the area entirely, and have an extinguisher staged before you loosen a clamp. Fuel also absorbs straight through skin, so wear the gloves rather than keeping them handy.

Why the Hose Wears Out

A fuel line dies of age rather than mileage. The plasticizers that give new rubber its flexibility migrate out of the hose wall over the years, and once they are gone the material behaves like hard plastic. Engine heat drives that migration faster, and the vibration of a working utility quad turns the resulting stiffness into visible cracks, usually at the bends where stress concentrates.

Ethanol in modern gasoline handles the interior. Alcohol attracts and holds water, and that moisture laden fuel slowly breaks down the inner liner, especially during the long idle stretches when a machine sits with a full line and nothing moving through it. Dry climates compound the outer damage by pulling moisture from the surface of the rubber, so a King Quad that lives in arid country will show brittleness years earlier than the same machine kept somewhere humid. The line ends up failing from both sides at once, which is why appearance alone is not a reliable measure of condition.

Symptoms You Should Not Ignore

Fuel line problems on a gravity fed carbureted machine tend to show up as fuel delivery problems long before they show up as puddles. Because nothing pressurizes the system, a small crack lets air in and interrupts flow instead of pushing fuel out.

  • Hesitation or bogging when you crack the throttle open, worst under load or on a climb
  • Behavior that mimics running out of gas when there is plenty in the tank
  • A strong fuel smell around the machine, often the earliest indicator
  • A wet spot or puddle on the floor beneath the engine after parking
  • Visible surface cracking, a hardened section, or a bulge next to a clamp
  • A dark ring of dust stuck to a fitting where fuel has seeped and dried

Working the Old Line Free

Turn the petcock off and give the machine a minute. Take the seat off, then remove the front fender fasteners or side panel needed to open up a clear view of the tank spigot and the carburetor inlet. Slide your pan into position, back out the float bowl drain screw on the carburetor, and let the bowl empty so you are not spilling it later.

Slide both clamps well back along the hose before you disturb the hose ends. Twist the hose gently on the barb to break the varnish seal that time has created, then work it off with steady pressure. A hose that has bonded solidly should be cut lengthwise with a razor and peeled away instead of forced; the brass and plastic fittings on a machine this old are the expensive half of that contest.

Pay attention to the routing while you still have the original as a reference. The 4x4 configuration means front differential hardware and extra frame crossmembers occupy space a two wheel drive quad leaves empty, and the hose follows a specific path through clips and guides to stay clear of the driveline and the hot exhaust. Photograph it if there is any doubt.

Fitting the Replacement and Checking Your Work

Use the old hose as a length template and cut the new one to match. Push each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms out, dry, with no lubricant of any kind. Grease and oil on a fuel fitting create a path for gasoline to migrate past the clamp no matter how tight you crank it. Warm the hose end in hot water if it does not want to slide on; that softens it enough to seat properly without stretching.

Place each clamp just behind the bead on the fitting so it squeezes hose against solid metal, and tighten to firm rather than crushing. Reroute the hose through every clip you noted and confirm it clears the exhaust and the front driveline with room to spare.

Open the petcock and let the system fill on its own. Watch both connections for a full two minutes, wipe them dry, and look again. Start the engine and let it idle to operating temperature while you inspect a third time, then shut it down and check once more while everything is hot and expanded. Reinstall the bodywork, then leave the King Quad parked on clean ground overnight. The morning inspection catches slow seeps that a short idle test will always miss.
