Near the end of the Fourtrax 300 run, Honda had this platform refined to the point where very little goes wrong mechanically. What does go wrong is rubber, and the fuel hose on a 1999 TRX300 is the piece most likely to leave a stain on your garage floor. This 2WD machine feeds its carburetor by gravity through a manual petcock, so the fix requires no specialized equipment and no pressure relief procedure.
Why Age Beats Mileage on a Fuel Hose
Hose failure has almost nothing to do with hours ridden. The compound relies on plasticizers to stay flexible, and heat radiating off the air-cooled cylinder pulls those out slowly over decades of heat cycling. The rubber that remains is hard and glassy, and hard rubber cannot absorb the constant shake of a single-cylinder engine or the flex of a frame working over rough ground. Cracks open first at the bends and behind clamps, where the material sits under permanent stress.
Climate factors in too. Dry, low-humidity air draws moisture out of the hose wall and accelerates the hardening, while sun on a quad stored uncovered adds ultraviolet damage. Ethanol-blended fuel then attacks from the inside during any long period of sitting, absorbing moisture and softening the inner liner until the bore turns gummy. A hose can therefore be brittle outside and mushy inside simultaneously, shedding particles toward the float bowl the whole time.
What a Bad Line Feels Like From the Seat
Some symptoms you see, others you feel through the throttle. Both count.
- A fuel puddle or dark damp stain beneath the engine after the machine has been parked
- Gasoline odor that hangs in a closed shop hours after shutdown
- Cracking, chalky texture, or stiff sections found by pinching along the hose
- Bogging on long climbs, hesitation off idle, or a stumble that acts like an empty tank
- Varnish and caked dust ringing a barb, the mark of fuel seeping past the clamp
The performance complaints are especially meaningful on a gravity system, because there is no pump pressure to push fuel through a restriction. A hose that has collapsed internally quietly leans the mixture and convinces owners they have a carburetor problem.
Setting Up the Work Area
Have gloves, eye protection, an approved sealed fuel container, a wide drain pan, gasoline-rated hose in the original inside diameter, fresh clamps, a flat-blade screwdriver, needle-nose pliers, sockets for the seat and side cover, a razor knife, a scrap length of hose for the float bowl drain, and plenty of rags all within arm's reach before the first fitting comes loose.
Take the ventilation piece seriously. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it sinks and gathers along the floor where water heater pilot lights, shop heaters, and power strips live. Roll the Fourtrax outside or open the garage completely and get a breeze moving at ground level, since a ceiling fan does nothing for vapor at ankle height. Kill every ignition source in the space and let the exhaust cool fully before you reach past it.
Disconnecting the Old Line
Close the petcock and confirm the flow actually stops. Valves of this vintage sometimes weep in the OFF position, and if yours does, drain the tank into your container. Remove the seat and left side cover to reach the valve body, then follow the hose down to the carburetor inlet. Slip the scrap hose onto the float bowl drain, aim it into the pan, and back out the screw so the bowl empties before the lower connection is disturbed.
Worth noting the contrast: on an injected quad you would pull the fuel pump fuse, run the engine until it stalled to bleed pressure, and only then open a fitting. Here, a closed valve is the whole shutdown. Slide both clamps well back, twist each hose end to break the varnish bond at the barb, and pull it free. A hose that has bonded on should be slit lengthwise and peeled rather than forced. Being 2WD, this Fourtrax has a short, open run with none of the front differential hardware or extra clearance points that complicate a 4x4 routing.
Installing the Replacement and Checking Your Work
Cut the new hose to the same length as the original so it follows an easy curve. Excess length lets it rest against the cylinder head or rub a frame tube, and too little pulls at both barbs until the hose walks off one. Push each end on dry until it bottoms against the fitting shoulder, and keep grease, oil, and silicone spray entirely away from the barbs. Lubricant on a sealing face gives fuel a path past the clamp, and no amount of extra torque will close it. Dip the hose end in hot water if it fights you.
Set the clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting with the screws where a screwdriver can reach them, and tighten evenly until the hose will not turn by hand. Stop there rather than cutting a groove into new rubber. Route the line back through its original clips so it stays clear of the header and steering components.
Close the bowl drain, open the petcock, and let the quad sit five minutes with a clean dry rag beneath each joint. If both stay dry, start the engine and inspect once more while it idles, because vibration exposes joints that pass a static test. Before the panels go back on, clean the sediment screen behind the petcock, which holds the debris the old hose was shedding, and verify the tank vent hose is clear. Either one, left neglected, will imitate the very fuel starvation you just cured.
