This machine is carbureted and gravity fed, so the whole system is simple — a petcock, a rubber hose, two clamps, and a Mikuni float bowl.
Assembling Your Kit Before Anything Comes Apart
Here is what belongs on the bench when you start:
- Replacement fuel hose rated for gasoline, matched to the inside diameter of the original piece
- New clamps — spring clips or narrow worm-gear bands, two minimum, plus a spare
- Rubber or nitrile gloves and safety glasses
- A sealed fuel-safe container and a shallow catch pan

Why the Hose Wore Out in the First Place
Fuel line ages from both sides. Externally, the rubber loses the compounds that keep it soft and turns hard and glassy, and every heat cycle plus every mile of vibration turns that stiffness into hairline cracks. The result is a hose that is simultaneously hardening outside and softening inside, shedding particles toward the carburetor. Reading the Warning Signs
Failing hose rarely goes from perfect to broken overnight. Look for gasoline pooling on the skid plate or floor beneath the engine, a smell that hangs around the quad long after you park it, and visible cracking or a chalky texture along the hose. Pay attention to how the engine runs, too. A partially blocked or collapsing line makes a Wolverine bog under load, hesitate off idle, and surge at part throttle as though the tank were nearly empty.
Inspect the hose with the petcock closed and your fingers, not just your eyes. Bend it into a gentle curve and watch the outer surface: if fine cracks open up as it flexes, the wall has already lost its integrity. Removing the Original Hose

Ease each clamp back along the hose and away from its barb. Rotate the hose a quarter turn to break the varnish seal before pulling, and pull straight rather than levering sideways — the petcock spigot is not built to take a prying load. When a hardened end simply will not release, slice it lengthwise with the utility knife and peel it away. This is a 4x4 chassis, so remember that the front differential and its driveshaft occupy the space below the engine; keep the old hose and any drips clear of that hardware as you work it out, and note the clips it passed through on the way.
Installing and Sealing the New Line
Cut the new hose to match the old one exactly. A run that is too long will rub the frame or drape toward the exhaust, and one that is too short puts a constant pull on both fittings. Push each end fully onto its barb, past the raised bead, and do it dry. Grease and lubricants have no place on a fuel fitting — they compromise the seal and can contaminate the carburetor. Warm the hose ends in hot water if they resist.
Place your new clamps just behind the bead at each end and tighten them evenly. Snug is the target; crushing the hose wall creates the leak you were trying to avoid. Feed the finished line back through its original guides with a smooth, unkinked path, then confirm it hangs clear of the cylinder head and the front drive components before the bodywork goes back on.
Confirming the Repair
Switch the petcock to ON and give gravity a minute to fill the hose and float bowl. Watch both connections closely, then dry them with a clean rag and check again — the second look on dry rubber catches seepage the first one hides. Reconnect the battery, fire the engine, and inspect once more at idle with everything still exposed. Only when both fittings stay bone dry should you reinstall the panels and call it done.
One last item on this generation: if an inline filter sits between the petcock and the carburetor, replace it while you have the system open. Old filters hold rust and varnish that a fresh hose cannot flush, and a clogged one produces the same lean, bogging symptoms as a bad line.
