The 1998 Grizzly 600 4x4 was the machine that put Yamaha's big utility quad on the map, and plenty of them are still working for a living. What almost none of them still have is original fuel hose in usable condition. Twenty-plus years of heat, vibration, and modern gasoline take that soft rubber and turn it into something closer to old garden hose, and the good news is that replacing it is one of the simplest jobs on the machine.
A Gravity Fed System With a Real Shutoff
Your Grizzly 600 is carbureted, which makes this job considerably friendlier than it is on an injected quad. Fuel leaves the tank through a petcock, or fuel valve, and travels downhill through a rubber hose to the carburetor. There is no electric pump and no residual pressure sitting in the line. Rotate the valve to OFF and the supply stops, which is your shutoff, your safety measure, and your convenience all in one. The carburetor also has a float bowl drain, so you can empty the bowl into a container instead of dumping it on the floor.
Why Old Hose Stops Sealing
Fuel hose ages in two directions at once. Engine heat cycles gradually drive out the plasticizers that make the rubber flexible, so the wall stiffens, shrinks a little, and loses its ability to squeeze tightly around a barb. In dry desert or plains climates the process runs faster, because low humidity draws moisture out of the material and hardens it from the surface inward. Eventually you get fine surface checking that grows into real cracks.
Ethanol-blended gasoline does the interior damage. Alcohol pulls water into the fuel and slowly attacks the hose liner, softening it while the outside turns brittle, and any material that lets go heads straight for the carburetor jets. When a Grizzly sits with fuel in the system, evaporation leaves varnish behind that glues the hose to its fittings and hides early seepage under a hard crust. On a machine this old, age alone justifies fresh hose.
Symptoms You Should Not Ignore
- A fuel puddle or wet stain under the quad after it has been parked with the valve on
- Strong gasoline smell around the machine, particularly near the tank and carburetor
- Visible cracking, splitting, or a hardened, chalky section anywhere along the hose
- A dust-caked damp ring at a fitting, which is dried fuel residue collecting grit
- An engine that bogs under load, sputters at high rpm, or acts like it is low on fuel with plenty in the tank
Since this is a gravity feed system, a cracked hose can also let air in and starve the carburetor without leaving an obvious puddle. If the 600 runs fine at low throttle but falls flat when you ask for more, the supply hose belongs on your list of suspects.
Tools, Parts, and Handling Gasoline Safely
Set out gloves and eye protection, a drain pan, an approved sealed container, replacement fuel hose in the correct inside diameter, new clamps or a clamp assortment, a flat-blade screwdriver for worm-gear clamps, pliers for spring clips, hand tools for the seat and bodywork, and a stack of clean rags. Line-clamping pliers are useful but not essential here, since the petcock does the work of stopping flow.
Real safety note: gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles at floor level, right where you are kneeling. An open window does nothing for it. Work outside or open the garage completely and set a fan low to push air out across the floor. No smoking, no grinding, no hot incandescent work lights, and keep a fire extinguisher on the ground within reach.
Removing the Old Hose
Turn the fuel valve to OFF first and confirm the flow has actually stopped, since aged valves sometimes seep past. Place the drain pan under the carburetor, open the float bowl drain, and let the bowl empty into your container so the carb side does not dump on you when the hose comes loose. Remove the seat and whatever plastics stand between you and the hose run.
Slide clamps well back along the hose before you touch a fitting, then lay a rag over the joint and work the hose off. Twist gently to break the varnish bond at the barb rather than yanking, and if the hose refuses to release, slit it lengthwise with a razor blade and peel it away. Forcing an old hose off a brass petcock spigot is a good way to bend or crack the fitting, and that turns a twenty-minute job into a much bigger one.
Pay attention to how the hose is routed as it comes out. This is a 4x4, so the forward chassis carries a front differential and driveline hardware that a two-wheel-drive quad does not, and the hose threads past specific frame clearance points to stay off hot and moving parts.
Installing the New Line
Cut the replacement to match the original length. Slack is not harmless — extra hose sags into the exhaust or rubs against a frame edge until it wears through, while a short piece pulls at both fittings. Push each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms out on the shoulder, and do it dry. Grease, oil, and silicone spray on a fuel fitting create the exact leak path you are trying to prevent, no matter how tight the clamp. Dip a stubborn hose end in hot water for half a minute and it will slide right on.
Position the new clamps just behind the raised bead at each fitting and tighten them evenly, firm enough to seal without cutting into the rubber. Reinstall the hose into every original clip and guide so it follows the same path Yamaha designed, well clear of the header and the front driveline.
Leak Check and Wrapping Up
Close the float bowl drain, then turn the fuel valve back to ON and simply watch. Because this is a gravity system, fuel begins moving immediately, and a bad joint will show itself within a minute. Look and feel at both the petcock end and the carburetor end with a clean, dry finger, since a trace of dampness on fresh rubber is unmistakable.
Start the engine and let it idle several minutes, then check both joints once more with a rag and pay attention to the smell of the air around the carburetor. Only after a leak-free idle should the plastics and seat go back on. While you are in there, it is worth glancing at the inline filter if your 600 has one and the tank vent hose, since a restricted vent can mimic a failing supply hose by starving the carburetor as the tank draws down.
