Replacing a Cracked Fuel Line on Your 1998 Suzuki LT-F300F King Quad

Rubber hose is a consumable, even though nobody sells it that way. On a 1998 King Quad 300 the original fuel line has spent its entire life absorbing engine heat, chassis vibration, and whatever fuel blend happened to be in the tank, and eventually it stops being flexible rubber and becomes brittle plastic. The good news is that this generation is entirely carbureted, gravity fed from a tank mounted petcock, so replacing the hose requires no pressure relief procedure and no special tooling.
How Fuel Hose Deteriorates
Two separate processes are working against the line at all times. From the outside, the flexible additives blended into the rubber slowly evaporate out of the wall. As they leave, the hose loses its ability to bend without damage, and every heat cycle from this air cooled single accelerates the change. That is why a hose can look fine sitting still and split the moment you flex it to remove it.
From the inside, ethanol blended gasoline attacks the liner. The alcohol in modern pump fuel pulls moisture out of the air and holds it in suspension, and that mixture gradually breaks down the inner surface of the hose. Machines that sit for months at a time with fuel standing in the line suffer worst, because the degradation continues with nothing flushing it out. Add a dry regional climate that strips surface moisture from the exterior and you get a hose being consumed from both directions simultaneously.
Recognizing a Line That Is About to Fail
Pull the seat and look before you have a reason to. What you are hunting for is any change in texture or color along the run between the petcock and the carburetor.
- Fine cracking across the outer surface, often worst where the hose bends
- A stiff, hardened feel with no spring back when pinched between thumb and finger
- Swelling or a soft, mushy spot immediately behind a clamp
- Fuel odor around the machine that lingers even after it has sat closed up
- Wet streaking down the frame or a small puddle on the floor under the engine
- Engine bogging on throttle, hesitating under load, or acting starved when the tank is not low
That last symptom deserves emphasis on a gravity fed quad. With no pump maintaining flow, a crack that admits air breaks the fuel column and starves the carburetor. A King Quad that pulls fine on flat ground and falls flat halfway up a grade is often telling you about its fuel line rather than its jetting.
Tools, Parts, and a Word About Gasoline
Have all of this staged within reach before the first fitting comes loose.
- Fuel rated hose matched to the original inside diameter
- New clamps sized for the hose you bought, plus a spare inline filter if the machine has one
- Nitrile or rubber gloves and eye protection
- A wide drain pan and a sealed container rated for gasoline
- Flat blade screwdriver, needle nose or clamp pliers, razor knife
- Plenty of clean rags and a flashlight
Gasoline vapor is the real hazard here, not the liquid. It is heavier than air, so it flows downhill and pools at floor level where water heater pilots, furnace burners, and compressor motors live. Do this job outside or with a garage door fully open and air moving across the floor. Disconnect the battery, leave the extension cords and space heaters out of the area, and keep an extinguisher where you can grab it without moving your feet.
Taking the Old Line Off
Shut the petcock. Remove the seat, then whatever fender hardware is needed to see both the tank spigot and the carburetor inlet clearly. Slide the pan underneath, loosen the float bowl drain screw on the carburetor, and drain the bowl so the carb is not full when you disturb the hose.
Walk each clamp back along the hose first. Pulling on a hose with a clamp still clamped is how fittings break. Rotate the old hose a quarter turn on each barb to shear the varnish that has glued it in place, then ease it off. If it will not budge, do not escalate the force. Slit it lengthwise with the razor and peel the two halves away from the barb. Petcock spigots and brass carburetor fittings on machines of this age snap far more easily than the hose lets go.
As the hose comes out, document exactly where it ran. This is a 4x4 chassis, so front differential hardware and additional frame structure sit in the path, and the factory routing exists specifically to keep the hose away from the exhaust and the front driveline. Note every clip, guide, and clearance point before you lose the reference.
Installing the New Hose
Cut your replacement against the old piece for length. You want a relaxed curve with no tension pulling on either fitting, but not so much slack that the hose sags into anything. Push each end onto its barb completely, until it seats against the shoulder, and do it dry. Grease, oil, and silicone all belong nowhere near a fuel barb, because a lubricated sealing surface lets fuel wick past the clamp regardless of how tight it is. If the hose resists, soften the end in hot water and try again.
Position new clamps behind the raised ridge on each fitting, where they can bite into hose backed by metal. Turn a worm gear clamp until it is firm and no further; crushing the rubber creates the weak spot that fails next. Route the hose back through every clip, then tug lightly at both ends to confirm nothing is loose.
Confirming the Repair Holds
Open the petcock and stand there. Fuel will fill the line and refill the float bowl over the next minute or two, and this static hold is your first and best test. Wipe both joints dry with a clean rag, wait, then examine them again under a light. Start the engine, let it reach operating temperature while you check a third time, then shut down and inspect with everything hot, since heat expands the fittings slightly. Reinstall the bodywork last. Finally, park the King Quad on clean ground overnight and look in the morning. A weep too slow to appear during an idle test will still leave a spot by dawn, and finding it in your driveway is a great deal better than finding it on the trail.
