That sounds obvious until you are holding an open fitting on a 1998 Quadrunner 250 with fuel running out and the right size hose still sitting in a shopping cart. Ten minutes of preparation turns this into a tidy half-hour repair with nothing spilled and nothing improvised.
The Shopping List
- Fuel-rated replacement hose matched to the original inside diameter, bought by measurement rather than by eye
- New hose clamps or spring clips sized for that hose, since decades-old clamps have taken a set and will not seal on fresh rubber
- A replacement inline filter if your machine carries one in the run

Keep every ignition source out of the area entirely — no open flame, no shop heater, no hot halogen light, no grinder throwing sparks. Pull the negative battery cable before opening a fitting so a slipped wrench cannot arc, keep the drained fuel capped rather than evaporating in an open pan beside you, and leave gloves on throughout since gasoline pulls the oils straight out of skin.
Which Fuel System This Quad Has
The 1998 LT-F250 is carbureted and gravity fed. A manual petcock at the tank controls flow into a short rubber hose that drops to a Mikuni carburetor, and no part of the circuit is pressurized. Turning the petcock lever to off truly stops the fuel, so the pressure-relief routine a fuel-injected machine demands does not apply: there is no pump relay to remove, no cranking sequence to bleed a rail, and no self-locking quick-connect coupler to release. Both ends of this hose are plain barbs secured with clamps.

Dry, low-humidity climates hasten the process by pulling moisture from the rubber and hardening it from the outer surface inward.
Ethanol-blended pump gas attacks from within. It absorbs water and degrades the inner liner, softening it until material sheds toward the carburetor. Fuel that sits unused for months leaves gum and varnish deposits that can restrict flow while the hose still looks fine from outside. Between the two mechanisms, an original hose from 1998 has nothing left in reserve.
Symptoms and Removal
Look for a puddle or damp shadow under the tank after the machine sits, a gasoline smell that lingers long after shutdown, visible cracking or a chalky surface on the hose, a dirt-caked ring at a fitting where fuel has seeped and dried, and an engine that bogs on throttle or stumbles lean at higher rpm as though it were running out of gas.
To remove the line, shut the petcock and run the engine until it stalls. Set the pan under the carburetor, open the float bowl drain screw, and let the bowl empty. Pull the seat and any panel blocking the run, then trace the hose and note the clips and guides holding it. Walk the old clamps back with pliers, twist each end a quarter turn to break the varnish bond, and pull it off the barb. If the rubber has fused to a fitting, slit it lengthwise and peel it away rather than pulling harder, because the petcock spigot is soft and bending it forces a tank removal. Fitting the New Line and Checking It
Cut the replacement to match the original length precisely. Assemble dry — grease, oil, and silicone spray have no place on a fuel fitting, since any lubricant film gives fuel a route to creep along the sealing face and can wash contamination into the carburetor. Dip a stiff hose end in hot water for a few seconds instead. Set each clamp just behind the raised bead and tighten firmly and evenly, stopping short of cutting the rubber. Orient any inline filter with the flow arrow toward the carburetor, support its weight, and route the line through its factory guides clear of the exhaust and cylinder head.
Close the drain screw, Reconnect the battery, and open the petcock. Let gravity fill the line for a minute, then wipe both joints with a clean rag and watch for fuel reappearing. Start the engine and let it idle several minutes, inspecting again while everything vibrates, since that is when marginal seals declare themselves. Blip the throttle a few times, sweep a dry rag under the hose where you cannot see, and confirm it comes back clean. Dry joints after a few minutes of running means the LT-F250 is finished and ready to ride.
