Most 1998 Lakota 300 machines still running today have had at least one owner discover a fuel smell in the garage and trace it back to the supply hose. The system is straightforward: this is a carbureted quad, so a petcock on the tank controls flow, gravity moves fuel down a short rubber hose, and the carburetor on the 271cc single meters it from there. Knowing that layout up front tells you exactly what to shut off and what to drain before you begin.
How the Rubber Deteriorates
Fuel hose stiffens long before it splits. Sustained engine heat drives the plasticizers out of the rubber over the years, and as those compounds leave, the wall loses its ability to flex. Once the hose is rigid, ordinary chassis vibration begins working fine cracks into the surface, and they appear first at the bends immediately off each fitting where movement concentrates.
Where a machine lives changes the timeline substantially. Riders in dry country see hose harden faster, because the surrounding air draws residual moisture out of the rubber wall. Ethanol–blended gasoline attacks from the inside, swelling and softening the liner while pulling in water that leaves gum deposits behind. When a Lakota sits for months at a stretch with E10 in the line, both processes work uninterrupted, which explains how a hose can look serviceable from the outside while breaking down internally and depositing debris in the carburetor.
What Failure Looks Like on a Gravity System
Keep an eye out for these:
- A puddle or wet trail on the floor beneath the engine after the quad has sat with the petcock on
- A gasoline odor that hangs in the garage with no visible spill
- Surface cracking, a chalky gray cast, or a section that stays firm when you pinch it
- Grit stuck in a dried ring at either clamp, marking repeated seepage
- Bogging, a lean stumble at higher rpm, or the engine acting starved with a half–full tank
Carbureted machines have a second symptom pattern worth knowing. A hose that has softened internally can partially collapse under suction or shed material that restricts flow, starving the float bowl without leaking a single drop. Drivability trouble therefore belongs on your inspection list right alongside visible cracks.
Tools, Materials, and Gasoline Precautions
Stage all of this before you begin:
- Rubber or nitrile gloves plus safety glasses
- Replacement hose in the Lakota's original inside diameter
- A new inline filter if your machine has one mounted on the visible line
- Fresh clamps, factory spring clips or correctly sized worm–gear clamps
- A drain pan and a sealed fuel–approved container
- Screwdrivers, small sockets for the seat and tank shroud, a razor knife, and plenty of rags
Ventilation is the safety step that actually matters. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles into a layer at floor level, right where you will be while reaching under the tank, so work outdoors or with the door fully open and a fan on the ground pushing air out. Remove every ignition source from the space, including appliance pilot lights, and take soaked rags outside rather than leaving them near the machine.
Closing the Petcock and Removing the Line
Turn the petcock to off before anything else. This is the advantage a carbureted Lakota holds over a fuel–injected machine, where you would be reaching for line–clamping pliers to stop flow instead. With the valve closed, loosen the carburetor float bowl drain screw and let the bowl empty into your pan or through a hose into your container. Draining the bowl prevents fuel from running back out of the carb inlet the moment the hose is free.
Remove the seat and the plastic tank cover to expose the petcock spigot and the full hose route. Push old clamps well back along the hose before disturbing a fitting, and keep a rag cupped under each joint. Break the varnish bond with a gentle twist of the hose on its spigot rather than a hard pull. If the hose has genuinely fused itself on, slit it lengthwise with a razor and peel it away in strips so the petcock outlet and the brass carburetor inlet come through undamaged. Note every guide the original hose ran through. As a two–wheel–drive machine, the Lakota has no front differential or extra drivetrain hardware in the way, so the path is short, but it still needs to clear the exhaust and any control cable routed nearby.
Fitting the New Hose and Confirming No Leaks
Cut the replacement to match the length of the original. Extra hose sags against the frame or engine case and eventually chafes through, and a piece cut short keeps both fittings under permanent tension. Push each end fully onto its spigot until it bottoms out, dry. Grease, oil, and silicone spray must stay away from fuel fittings entirely, because a lubricated sealing surface is precisely what lets fuel creep out from under a clamp. A stiff hose end softens in a few seconds of hot water and slides on easily. If your Lakota uses an inline filter, install it with the flow arrow aimed at the carburetor and secure both short sections with their own clamps.
Set new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly, firm enough to seal but not so tight that the edge cuts the rubber. Turn the petcock back to on and let gravity refill the hose and float bowl, then watch. Give both connections and the filter a solid minute of attention before touching the starter, since a gravity system shows a slow weep clearly if you are patient. Start the engine, let it idle, and inspect once more with a clean rag, feeling for dampness rather than waiting for a drip. When several minutes of running leave everything dry, reinstall the tank cover and seat on the 1998 Lakota and give the completed run a final look before you ride.
