Fuel Line Diagnosis and Replacement on a 1998 Honda TRX300FW 4x4

When a 1998 TRX300FW starts smelling like a gas can in the barn, the hose between the petcock and the carburetor is the first place to look. This 282cc four-wheel-drive quad is carbureted and gravity fed, so that one length of rubber is the only flexible component carrying fuel, and it is invariably the part that ages out first.
Symptoms That Convict the Hose
Gravity feed keeps fuel pressing toward any breach as long as the petcock is open, which means a failing line drips while the machine sits idle for days. Work through this checklist:
- Gasoline odor around the front bodywork that does not clear after the engine cools
- A wet patch or dried stain on the ground directly under the engine
- Hairline surface cracks, a chalky gray appearance, or hard spots you can feel by pinching the hose
- A ring of dust caked onto a fitting by fuel that seeped and evaporated repeatedly
- Bogging while pulling a load or climbing, a lean stumble under throttle, or the engine acting empty with fuel in the tank
Those last symptoms come from restricted flow rather than leakage, and they are easy to blame on the carburetor. A hose that has collapsed internally or filled with gum simply cannot refill the float bowl fast enough. Fuel-injected quads deliver the same drivability complaints, but a leak there tends to mist and evaporate at the breach instead of pooling, so the puddle is a diagnostic advantage carbureted owners get for free.
Why the Rubber Wore Out
Two separate processes have been working on that hose for decades. Externally, heat cycling from the nearby air-cooled cylinder drives the plasticizers out of the rubber compound, leaving line that is rigid instead of springy. Once it stops flexing with engine movement, cracks form at the surface and spread inward. Low humidity accelerates the whole thing by wicking moisture out of the hose wall, which is why quads from arid regions often have hose that breaks apart during removal.
Internally, ethanol-blended gasoline draws in atmospheric water, and the resulting blend is harder on period rubber than the fuel this machine was designed around. Fuel standing in the line during long parking stretches leaves varnish along the bore and can soften the liner until it releases particles headed for the carburetor jets. Either mechanism alone justifies replacement; together they make it overdue on any TRX300FW of this vintage.
What to Have Ready and How to Stay Safe
You will want nitrile or rubber gloves, eye protection, gasoline-rated replacement hose in the original inside diameter, new clamps in the factory style, an approved fuel container, a shallow drain pan, a flat-blade screwdriver, needle-nose pliers, a fresh razor blade, sockets for the bodywork, penetrating oil for seized fasteners, plenty of rags, and a flashlight. Corrosion geneRally settles the question of whether to reuse the original clamps.
Ventilation is not boilerplate. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, sinks to the floor, and travels toward water heater pilots, shop furnaces, and motors near ground level. Work outdoors when weather allows or open the overhead door fully, shut off any open flame in the building, and let the engine and exhaust cool to the touch before beginning — an air-cooled header stays hot long after shutdown. Cap the fuel container between pours and wipe spills up immediately.
Taking It Apart
Shut the petcock off. On this carbureted machine that valve is your entire isolation procedure, while an injected quad has no petcock at all — there you would clamp the line closed with line-clamping pliers or pull the pump fuse and crank until the engine dies to bleed pressure. Remove the seat and the plastic tank cover for clear access to both ends of the hose, applying penetrating oil to any fastener that fights back.
Slide the drain pan under the carburetor and back out the float bowl drain screw so the trapped fuel downstream comes out under control. Walk both clamps well back along the hose, twist each end at its barb to break the varnish bond, then pull it straight off. Prying with a screwdriver risks scoring the petcock spigot or carburetor inlet, and a scored barb never seals cleanly again. Hose this old usually comes off best slit lengthwise and peeled. Note the routing and each clip location before the old piece is fully free, because on this four-wheel-drive chassis the line has to thread past front differential hardware and additional frame structure that a two-wheel-drive quad does not carry.
Fitting the Replacement and Checking Your Work
Cut the new hose to match the original length exactly. Too long and it sags against the cylinder or drifts toward front driveline components; too short and both fittings sit under permanent tension. Slide each end onto its barb dry, bottoming it out so the retaining bead is entirely inside the rubber. Do not lubricate the fittings with grease, oil, or silicone, however stiff the hose feels — lubricant creates a path for fuel to creep along the barb and can carry into the float bowl. A few seconds in hot water softens the end safely.
Set new clamps just behind the bead at both ends and tighten them evenly to firm, not crushed, then clip the hose back into its factory guides clear of the exhaust and moving driveline parts. Close the float bowl drain screw, open the petcock, and watch both connections for a full minute; gravity feed shows a bad joint within seconds. Blot each fitting with a clean dry rag, wait, and blot again so leftover fuel does not fool you. Start the engine, idle it several minutes to fill the bowl, and inspect once more with the hose warm and vibrating.
Finishing Touches Under the Bodywork
With the tank cover still off, pull the strainer screen from the petcock and rinse it clean. Years of tank sediment plus the crumbs shed by the old hose collect in that screen, and a plugged one is the usual explanation when a quad keeps starving after a new line goes on. Take a look at the base of the fuel valve for weeping as well, since its internal seals have aged exactly as long as the hose you discarded. That screen is serviceable because this is a carbureted machine; fuel-injected models place their filter inside the tank as part of the pump assembly, beyond the reach of any hose replacement. Once both joints stay dry, reinstall the cover and seat and put the 1998 TRX300FW back to work.
